I'm trying to think through something around this difference you discuss, between science where it's ok to get told ideas and trust experts because there's no way you can work out all the information you need under your own steam, and art appreciation where the value is in the process of reaching the conclusion yourself and if you just listened to an expert and believed them you'd really be missing the point. When, near the end of the video, Nguyen was recommending various books and articles and summarising them, I initially thought "ah this is handy i probably won't have time to read all that myself, but I can fold some of these ideas into my own world view" - then I thought "wait isn't the value in my own journey to an understanding of these ideas, based on my own experience of reading the books?" Like, I think I'd probably enjoy a series where cj just told us interesting ideas in aesthetic philosophy, but the reason I want to pay for this patreon and am compelled by the stuff is because it's interesting to watch them get to grips with the ideas almost in real time, and to be along for the ride in this Art Process of fitting different ideas together into a theory. So that's one part of what I'm thinking (where does this kind of media fall on the spectrum from science to art, how much of the value of this channel is in listening to what cj has to say and trusting them vs the encouragement to seek our own understanding of these concepts, with the channel and patreon as a guide or jumping-off point). Then the other thing was about how we come to understand ideas generally, to what extent we form beliefs based on testimony vs our own deductive experiential thing. In my day job teaching, I can tell a kid over and over again that area is length x width and they can believe me and perform those calculations, but I think that they don't truly *know* that area is length x width until they've sat down and filled in a square with rows of smaller blocks and really discovered for themselves that the length of blocks and the width of blocks together make the whole square. Similarly, in therapy, we can be told over and over that we have inherent value as humans and deserve to have our needs met, but we struggle to take that idea on board into our own worldview unless we have some kind of penny dropping moment of understanding (which can look all kinds of different ways for different people) and truly *know* that we deserve to have our needs met because of our inherent value as people. I think in both these examples, I probably need to be told the idea by an expert several times as part of how I learn it, but I don't incorporate it into my innate understanding of the world until I've worked it out for myself. I'm not too sure what I'm going towards here but it feels important to this understanding of art as that process - there's no point just being told by a bunch of people that Shakespeare is good, you have to go see the plays and understand the language and the stories and experience that moment with the actors and everyone involved in the performance - but it does still matter that everyone is telling me Shakespeare is good! I won't understand the language that reveals to me that Shakespeare is good unless I engage with the ideas of people who already know and allow them to explain it to me. I have a suspicion that I'm just rephrasing Nguyen at the end of the video but it feels important that when we are trusting to testimonial that can be a really helpful aid to reaching our own conclusion, even when our own conclusion is exactly what the testimonial already said. We need the expert opinion to show us where we should be aiming our own attempts at understanding. I guess this is also basically what cj is saying about reviewers and critics. There seems to me to be value in the opinions of others right up until the point that I have been able to form my own opinion, at which point I no longer need to remember what my high school teacher told me about shakespeare's sonnets because I have folded that knowledge into my own innate sense of what a sonnet is. This Is a very long comment and I'm not at all sure how much original thought it contains 🤸
