A good old fashioned conversation about art, subjectivity/objectivity, creative process, critique, vulnerability, performance, interpretation, etc.

Jake's a lovely sweet soul, an actor and thinker and lover of things. We trade our experiences in communities and professions performing and developing art, expressing ourselves, seeking quality in all places, not just the flashy "Official" ones. We thoroughly excavate a wide variety of nooks and crannies in creativity and philosophy, I think people would benefit from hearing Jake muse so optimistically and brightly and from hearing me talk a little bit about my biases and inclinations when I talk about art, and the reason I lean on things like objectivity.

Despite the inescapable intrinsic shadow of Art/Creativity over my public and private personae, I actually really hold my tongue about it online a lot. I have so much material I could be getting into, but I sense I'm still at the edge of being able to articulate and express it as excellently as I'd like to. Art is both the constant companion subject matter and a kind of final boss, for which I have many many 45% formed theoretical and practical conceptual structures. So this conversation is a nice glimpse at a few  ideas that I haven't officially expressed because I feel they're not done, but I think people will connect with.

SOCIAL NO PARA: Ep 8 | Jake on Subjectivity

This brings to mind a few things: 1. I watch Howl's Moving Castle when I'm sad. I've watched every video interpretation of it and I love that people get different things from it, but my partner gets mad that people have missed his interpretation of the point. I just appreciate the value in diversity of takeaways. 2. Affect and intent vs actual interpretation. I'm a disabled artist making work about the pandemic. It's super heavy shit and I want people to have a very specific takeaway, but I'm planning to do so by making it just really beautiful. Kinda like how Nick Cave had beautiful spinners that drew people in and it isn't until you look closer that you see they're all to do with gun violence. 2.5. Being disabled and working alone, I work super fucking slowly. I'm making this work but I don't know when it's going to be finished or where it's going to be exhibited (I doubt anywhere big but I have ambitions). I pursue the work anyway because regardless of getting there or not, at least some of it will be made. I refuse to exhibit it until I'm happy it's finished and enough which will take tiiime but the alternative is a half-assed experience and reduced affect (art here for me is mostly about the affect). The only way I'd be happy otherwise is it being exhibited incomplete if I died (a possible reality I have to consider), because again, it skews the experience for most people but it'll hopefully still have that affect.
