Hey [CJ opening riff] and thanks [or CJism that cleverly sidesteps actually saying thanks] for attending the Book Club Town Hall last month. Based on some of the opinions voiced there, we're running a slightly slower and more spaced out schedule for Braiding Sweetgrass.

(Note: There is a short titillating update on channel things at the end)

SCHEDULE:

These are the days at which I will be posting the discussion thread for each part. Checkpoints! We're taking two weeks for each chunk instead of one, and running for two months instead of one. It will be every other Sunday starting today!

April 2: GO! THAT'S TODAY *MACHINE GUN FIRE* START READING

APRIL 9: Preface + Planting Sweetgrass

APRIL 23: Tending Sweetgrass

MAY 7: Picking Sweetgrass

MAY 21: Braiding Sweetgrass

JUNE 4: Burning Sweetgrass + Epilogue

JUNE ???: Book Club Town Hall 2!

Keep in mind these are the days that the discussion posts with my reactions and thoughts will go live, and not hard deadlines -- I'm always watching the old threads and responding blah blah blah.

MORE PRIMING:

After we finish the book together we'll have our second ever book club zoom, as a wrap-up live-discussion. The last one was really lovely and I think allowed people a cathartic opportunity to connect w each other etc.

I'll be there! but don't get used to it; future Zoom town halls will be moderated by a not-me person such as a member of the research team (Ellen, Beck, Haweya) or an enthusiastic book club veteran. Just as a boundaries thing I'm very comfortable being a participant and showrunner but not The Single Celebrity Moderator Forevermore. This speaks 2 my desires and capacity. But people in book club expressed they'd be very happy to meet regardless of if I'm there monologuing for three hours and taking questions/comments, because community and connection etc.

So yeah! Mhm! yes!

Unlike previous books, Braiding Sweetgrass is a collection of loosely connected essays, and are not a linear narrative. So if you're not vibing with one you don't have to desperately truck through it to participate in a Book Club thread fully informed, just talk about the essays that impact you! We'll probably structure our thoughts By Essay in our big sexy gorgeous comments.

TITILLATING UPDATES:

The Jordan Peterson Pragmatism video is a large project that is going well. Thank you for your patience & patronage.

I have a plan for a mini essay series I will be launching Patreon Exclusive. So that should be nice for you too. Knowing YOU.

Have recorded many good Social No Paras. They will start releasing monthly-ish again soon.

Also, as Townhall Attendees know, the research team and I met in Bozeman and digitized the entire Robert Pirsig archive at Montana State University. It was a transcendent experience. My brother Ben From Canada filmed the whole thing wonderfully. The Quality video ought to fuck.

Will post the extended vlog here.

But that's months from now.

Wait till you see what's 6 months from now!

[sayonara fuckheads/cj closing riff]

(Note: Ellen prepped some of the info in this post, and left some bracketed spaces for me to fill in before posting. I did flesh out and finalize the post in this bar on Ossington in Toronto Canada at 5pm, but left some of the brackets because they were funny.)

Yes yes yes yes I've been waiting cause I didn't know it was a collection of essays, and was afraid to look and then get too excited and not know how much to read and didn't want to get carried away. My tendency is to binge content of all kinds, but I (begrudgingly) do miss sometimes the regular (usually shortish) intervals of forced wait for future installations of a series. I liked being unable to get a plot out of my head and just bring ravenous to know more about what was going to happen, to the point where even the other irrelevant details were interesting. (Game of thrones is the example that comes to mind, but that experience is now scarred by the last season, and by the fact that the book series is still yet unfinished. I feel no hope for satisfaction in that world.) And yeah, could have gone in and read ahead, I do that anyway every time I watch a horror movie, but there's something about joining in with the book club and that fresh start that has me wanting to do it "right", and for some reason my brain has said that "right" means "following the schedule to a T, reading no more and no less by each checkpoint"*. *Not that this is right for everyone - I suspect that it's actually right for fewer people than it's wrong for. I only mean this is right for me, and even then, it's arbitrary on multiple levels. And when I stop to wonder why do I care, and why do I think that's "right", it comes back to my historical inability to just follow the directions, goddamnit, why can't you just be normal. In earlier years, I would have gotten sucked in and read the whole book ahead of time (or struggled to focus and gotten only the first few paragraphs of each chunk) and come into each conversation with either more or less context than everyone else in the conversation. I think that had me feeling disconnected. And in the face of a tremendous amount of imposter syndrome, and a lack of knowing how to deepen connections to a book club built around an art philosopher and their companions and their work, I'd rather not add any risk of disconnection to my personal experience of this. And yet, it's that disconnection (and the difference in background) that would boost the conversation anyway, otherwise we'd all just comment the same damn thing. The journey is the destination, and all that. Regardless, thank you CJ, Ellen, and the rest for your work on administrating this thing. This slice of executive function is very much appreciated <3
