Adison (They/Them) and I talk about being imprisoned in flesh!

Why do we go on walks? Is it a radical act to stretch? Should we abandon our meat suits and upload ourselves into the multiverse? Is such a thing even possible?

At one point I sneeze, and at another point I call social media demonic.

Adison's also got capitalism 101 theories on why dance isn't celebrated in Western society.

And onward!

The book we discuss at different points throughout is Lila by Robert Pirsig, which we read in the CJ The X Book Club, and we also reference a Book Club Town Hall Zoom that I held with the research team in Montana, which Adison attended along with 50 others. It was fun.

Much appreciation to Adison and their passion for physical form from a repentant body hater. I am trying to learn from you.

(Sorry about the drought of Social No Para episode releases, there is a backlog and they will be coming out more regularly.)

i think a good way to convince people that our body is not a prison is by sshowing them some guys doing a bunch of backflips at the olympic games and saying "could a prison do THIS?"

Thank you for sharing this, it was a wonderful way to spend an evening, listening to you both while Brother Ass (apparently what St. Francis called his body) folded and put away laundry. ♥️

What a great conversation! So much good food for thought. Thank you both!

I really like the exploration of how different artforms convey ideas. I don't 'get' most dance, but I'll check out the recs to see if that helps. One of the problems I find with the less pop-oriented artforms (like classical music, opera, and even poetry) is that there's an educational barrier to understanding what is good and why. From outside, things seem so opaque to me, and being the uncultured swine that I am I find that 'what I like' in those artforms is just when they stray into more familiar pop sensibilities. Another topic that's interesting to me is the appreciation for our embodiedness. My wife is disabled and in near constant pain and/or nausea, and it's a very different equation for her and people in that boat. Hell, just as someone in my late 40's it's a different equation. That being said, I'm very happy for folx who have limber healthy bodies that they can take pleasure in! :)

was delighted by every moment of this, from arm extensions in ballet to latent socialist rallying cries. LOVE LOVE LOVE all these conversations on dance and body movement in general as a medium, and the tensions between it being a personal, internal expression and an act of more public communication. Hard agree on "moving your body on purpose is a very vulnerable experience" ohhh boy yes. the whole conversation made me uncomfortably aware of my presence in my own body and it was weird and good. haweya's idea on seeing yourself on zoom blew my fucking mind like ????? the fuck?? so much passion and interest and good good conversations throughout this whole thing i am BUZZING

On the topic of music and dance: there's this tv show in Italy which is basically the xfactor but with music and dance combined (you have both dancers and musicians competing on it and they can win both in the category and the program). And what happens nearly every single time is that not only do singers win (it's public vote-based) but even outside the show you hear about singers way more often. I feel like people only follow the dancers if they're dancers themselves. Also feel like with the way it's generally presented, music is perceived to be more accessible even at a professional level whereas with dancing it feels like you have to take classes or you can't learn the 'right' way to do it.

I loved hearing this conversation. Dance as an artform is so pure because its medium is the human body, whatever one can do. On the topic of dance recommendations, I just wanted to share a dance piece that moved me to pieces called "we are larger than our definitions" by Alonzo King on the TED archive yt page. Highly beautiful and emotional piece that one of my dance teachers sent to the class several years ago.. the dance piece is preceded by a short talk about the body as felt like a cage and the genius/genie yearning to escape the definitions of the bodybottle

The flow conversation was really interesting because it touched on some of the original problems of the concept. The idea came out of the writings of Csikszentmihalyi, and then grew in sports and games studies. Originally flow states described when someone is absorbed in a task that balances the right amount of challenge so that you focus on the activity to the exclusion of everything else. Some of the claims in the original books don't hold up to modern standards, but the term has taken on more productive usage in game dev circles. There was a good podcast EP covering the topic https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/23-csikszentmihalyi-flow/id1396219721?i=1000476236016

to the descartes "i think therefore i am" thought: Adison said you feel therefore you are but i think it's the opposite in both cases. You think BECAUSE you are. you are, therefore you feel
