i can't say i agree with the barbie being a good thing take not because i think being successful under capitalism is evil or bad or making money is awful but because of secret third reason. however, i do agree wholeheartedly with the take that artists should know how to manage their money should know how to read contracts and should make marketing and distribution part of their art. otherwise it's just a straight road to burnout and hating whatever you created. i wish more ppl talked about this instead of sharing useless growth hacks.

I watched this and I didn't start to hate you. I enjoyed it. It certainly isn't as meticulously presented as your more formal videos, but there's value to that. I think it's good for people to see the connection between humans and art - that meticulously presented art is made by messy humans that have to assemble things from jagged bits and pieces. I can see how it sucks if it's your bits and pieces on the table, though. I also really like that there are some solidly lefty (in the sense of diverse, creative, not-fascist) people out there that are presenting different arguments about money and value than the standard anarcho-communist line you get on YouTube A LOT. As a political scientist and political economist: 1) Capitalism =/= money. Money is just a way of storing value so that we can exchange our goods and services without always having a one-to-one barter exchange. That is a capacity you need if you're going to be more than a basic hunter-gatherer tribe, because the exchanges get too complicated to do one-to-one. 2) I'm not going to tell people they should like or not like communism. I think it's a perfectly fine way to think society should be run. I will go so far as to say that I think we have not figured out as much about how to effectively run a communist system that doesn't destabilize into serious production problems or totalitarianism. But I think it's reasonable to feel that the answer to that is to keep trying and learn more about how to do it well rather than to decide that it's Bad. There are examples of communism that are bad, but Communism isn't Bad. But a lot of the arguments against capitalism boil down to "abuse is happening under capitalism". And the thing is, there is no human system that doesn't or won't have abuses. Yes, there are fundamental structural reasons that capitalism can tend toward abuse. But most of those things trace back to weaknesses in human nature that are going to appear in any system (though possibly in different ways as shaped by a different system). Like, under capitalism, people want to hoard value. But that's a human thing: humans want to hoard value. Hoarded value makes us feel safe and in control, and our brains are very good at coming up with reasons why it's okay for us to hoard a disproportionate amount of value. Under communism, people will still want to hoard value; and evidence seen so far strongly suggests that they just find different ways to do it. But since most of the economic systems we (people likely to be watching English-language YouTube) interact with are capitalist right now, we see the abuses happening under capitalism very viscerally in a way most of us don't see abuses happening under communism. My point is I think it's also perfectly reasonable to feel that the answer to capitalism having problems is ALSO to keep trying and learn more about how to do it well rather than to decide that it's Bad. There are bad capitalist systems, and we shouldn't just accept abuses as inevitable (like yeah, it is absolutely true that we shouldn't incentivize people to work via threat of death/misery). But that doesn't necessarily mean that markets and money are inherently bad structures. There are existing market economies that don't incentivize work via the threat of death/misery. And there are/have been communist systems that do. "watered-down vague sense that capitalism and money are bad" - yes yes yes this is exactly what bothers me about the YouTube lefty discourse. (Edit: like yes, definitely critique capitalism, but base those critiques on specific analysis and be aware of nuance and context.) Anyway I loved the Barbie movie; it made me cry and feel empathy and joy and the world would be a less good place if it didn't exist.

Yk it's so funny because obviously CJ's videos and internet presence overall is about art and it's such a weird space for me as someone in research (where there is an intrinsic focus on limiting humanity to improve objectivity) and yet the ideas and principles that CJ has about art is so universal that I end up applying it to my work? I am not great at expressing myself so apologies in advance but basically it has been highlighting creation as an act of humanity for me and its just really compelling. Lmk if you guys have any thoughts about this, idk: I am throwing things into the void

saba

naw i think this is the truth. as much as my ego or my art ego monster really Loves being like iI AM NA ARTISTNTNI RANJRDARN . it is all really about just being a Human, and being a human which creates thing tm. Which for me is very related to my artistic practice, but also incredibly related to my engineering practice as it is also about making things. the void you are throwing things is in familiar to me
