i haven't finished the listening party yet but god. already you've cut to the heart of me. i have never let myself actively like olivia rodrigo. part of it was i was exhausted by her visibility (i heard her e v e r y w h e r e) but more honestly i, as a young feminine songwriter, was deeply deeply jealous and insecure that she could get so popular and have so much access to production and publicity and i didn't have that. god. it's brutal out here!!!! it's an ego thing, it's internalized misogyny, it's artistic desperation projected onto an easy target. even when i don't like olivia, i have so much respect for her perspective. she brings nuance to her music that is such a relief in a time where we love to pathologize every toxic trait and turn relationships into spectacle. i like that she can be angry without him doing anything actually wrong. i like that there is room for emotional impact. the ego death and discussion of it hits so hard. i'm mad at her because i just want to be her so bad, but even that bitterness comes from my own insecurity. people like my music, i'm the one refusing to work on it because i could disappoint myself. it's my own demons convincing me everyone else is better, so i get to waste my life being mad instead of making anything of worth. i'm so sick of myself. i'd rather be rather be

thanks for hosting this. i'm in a weird place creatively and i really needed to just do some music appreciation. not to mention the commentary but you always push me to interrogate myself and my relationship to art so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the commentary hit. especially when the material is so dense and masterful.

CJ would love for you to do this with GUTS too. I'm honestly just as impressed with her follow up album - which is wild. Also, just a suggestion, but maybe showing your player while your listening might make it easier for us to sync up listening.

Would love to see more of these. I love watching people with expertise talk about the things they love. That combination of affection and analysis is the best. I went in thinking like, I like Olivia Rodrigo ok and she's got some lines that hit hard, but the cohesive album experience elevated it. I had also heard that she drew from a wide array of influences before but I really heard it here. Paramore, yes, but I'm reminded of Elastica's "Connection" and Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer" and much more. Thanks for doing this.

I love the part at 34:20 about being a good one of the thing while also parodying the thing.

At 58:40, is it possible you're thinking of the line "What is grief, but love, persevering?" spoken by Vision in WandaVision?
