hey in case anyones interested, this guy asked me to do a livestream and i said yeah. he's kind of a provocateur, proud Jordan Peterson fan, identifies as an enlightened centrist, so make of that what you will, but i thought his league of legends politics vids were funny and he's highly complimentary towards me so i thought i'd engage in a bit of play.

Oh right and he's a patron!!! So he'll SEE this post in his EMAIL.

Anyways just giving u the opportunity to hang out, i have a head full of thoughts lately and i'll probably say some. I won't be looking at the chat. goes live in 45 min

CJ’s synthesis sympathy slithers silkily through the deleuze

I will definitely be curious to see how the conversation about Peterson goes

This was 10,000x better than I thought it was going to be. I was cynically assuming this to be just "debate-bro" content, but there was an honest meeting of minds during large portions of the stream. Got into in in the last 30m or so, but even then there was respect. Deeply surprised that I stayed for the whole thing and enjoyed the time spent.

does JP have a good reading list?

Thank you for engaging in that conversation, I particularly enjoyed vicariously picking your brain about non-binary issues. “They/them has some legs” was a fun a relatable line to hear. Good jokes and attitudes all around, time for me to dust off my old ethics textbooks and actually read them.

Jajaja that was fun

I’m not sure if the term “bad faith” or “unserious” would be more appropriate but let’s just say I don’t think his critiques on intersectionality or the use of they/them pronouns held any weight. I don’t like dislike him; he’s just a goofy silly little unserious man (I don’t respect his claim that’s he’s nonbinary using a definition of the word he came up with that makes it trivial/meaningless just because he’s a goofy unserious little boy) and I’m not gonna seek out any more of his stuff

someone called me a libra and i deleted their comment completely accidentalyl i am so sorry you can call me a libra omg it was a mistake

This was so engaging! As per usual any time I hear people with knowledge I am reminded of just how little I know lol It was so interesting to witness a non-aggressive conversation about political (or political adjacent) shit - I don't have a lot of exposure to thoughtful conversations like this and to see it with your amount of expertise had me feeling hope. My new Peterson Stan friend is undoubtedly going to lure me into conversations like this - I hope I can be as chill as you were. Also thank you for the many glimpses into your soul via speaking about your process and also about your pronouns - my parasocial brain rat is feeling very well fed. Also this was an excellent tease for the Peterson vid and I'm fuckin hype

Discussing pronouns with people who don't care about pronouns feels so trite to me at this point but it pains me that, here, they actually help me make my point: I don't care about what pronouns are used for me? Why? Because my native language did not have gendered pronouns and learning about the gendered pronouns in English was just as mechanical as learning about the present vs past tense. Gendered pronouns did not have any impact on the experiences I had about my body, sex, gender and expression. So, why would *I* care? What would be foolish for me to do here, with that individualistic experience, would be to go up to people who _do_ have to live with gendered pronouns being used for them for their entire lives in positive, negative or random ways, look them in the eye and say "who cares?" Dismissing the importance of frames like intersectionality or looking at things from a power dynamics perspective because they may not hold weight on all things about our existence equally and that there are "other axes that also have impact!!" is just misguided at best.

Friendly fighting 🤭 Also…I have read maps of meaning, yearsss ago around college, and goodreads says I gave it ⅘ and a positive review. Like many long nonfiction audiobooks it’s fallen out of my brain; I can’t wait to hear the takes! In my vague memory I think it introduced me to Jung and Campbell concepts & academic uses of mythology and archetypes, which I still love to this day, but i’ve got no idea what i’d think if I read it today post-Jung/archetype/Campbell reading Still need to finish the Red Book 😪

Don't wanna be to mean but this is probably the best example of why I do not enjoy conversations with self proclaimed centrist and why I was initially so attracted to Jordan Peterson. I can condone shitty ethics but I draw the line at apathetic faith. I wish this had been an interview. I want to know more about PF. His words felt flat for me. I am still unsure as to why he likes Peterson's ideas. I'm not saying you have to stick to your ideas blindly. But the center is still a point in the map. A choice one makes. PF's arguments seemed interesting but lacking in purpose. For someone that claims to be anti postmodern ideals he doesn't convey much passion for his objective truths.

this video was really funny but also kind of infuriating. but then you told him you think he has a good heart and i was just like 🥺 aww

the 'closing' point made by PF Jung that he can not say "my brother in Christ" as confidently is interesting because a lot of the time masculine terms in the bible, particularly "sons of god" are used to refer to all genders. I think a lot of masculine terms associated with Christianity should maybe be taken as gender-neutral. That's a luke-warm take though, I can only ask questions. Would changing our interpretations of the language be enough to dismantle patriarchal ideas? or do we need to change the language itself like "our God" instead of "lord God"?

Finally found time to watch this - I found it fascinating that in the pronoun debate, Paul admitted that he found himself using "they/them" for CJ out of respect. And as much as the terminally-online tumblr person in me wants to say "SEE? MISGENDERING IS ON PURPOSE BECAUSE OF DISRESPECT" I think it may honestly be a trust thing; CJ is a public figure who clearly puts a lot of analytical, competent thought into things, therefore they/them is not whimsy, it's not a power play, it's a conclusion. When someone who doesn't grow up around trans/nonbinary/nonconforming people sees "please refer to me as xe/xim," it feels like xey(?) are looking for a reason to get upset, or worse, trying to force the other person out of their comfort zone for petty reasons. But like... it's such a small thing. It's a tiny, tiny adjustment to make. Even if it feels unusual, even if it goes against the gut of the straight cis whomever who has never spoken to A Trans in the wild, it doesn't *need* to matter to the speaker. It should be enough that it matters to the listener. (I will say - Paul saying "I'm nonbinary, and so is everyone" really didn't sit well with me for similar reasons. It's a question of identity. "Nonbinary" is accepted to mean a specific thing, or one of a specific set of things. Changing or deliberately re-interpreting that definition for the sake of asserting that the identity _is not useful,_ which is to say is not _valid,_ is pointlessly provocative toward people who deal with enough shit already. But I don't think that it was out of active antipathy, more out of misunderstanding of the level/degree/angle of harm being caused, and I hope he's given/giving it more thought in the aftermath.)

This feels like it was a very useful exercise for both of you - no idea of pfJ beyond this livestream, yet it’s clear that mutual value has been built.

CJ you have the intuition and the logic (the heart and the brain) which is a LETHAL combo of brilliance because your empathy gives you a rare insight that many of these ultra cerebral intellectuals and politician-type people don't have of as much if that makes sense. Just appreciative that I get exposure to what you have to say.

Hi CJ the X! I love your work. I joined your Patreon in hopes of being able to share and be recommended philosophical materials. For example, I'm not sure if you've interacted with "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" by Thomas S. Kuhn but it speaks to "objectivity in science" and passionate pursuits of scientific discovery and the "unspoken" philosophy of scientific discovery very poignantly :)

Afaq Pooja

Did…did CJ just misgender paul at the end by calling him a Centrist and not an “enlightened centrist”… whatever that means. Like dude youre either left or right, not only are you gonna use a made up term like “centrist” but now youre policing people on how they should refer to you??? Wow /j
