Iconic ending. CJ unraveling into the void channeling Bo Burnham. Hard cut to black.

This podcast has been so nice to listen to while I'm ill on the couch, thank you for doing ur job CJ I love it Also I genuinely do want to do a Peterson Vid watch party with this group at some point - I want to experience the Art Moment in community. Watched the podcast, interesting discussion, lots of topics worthy of discussing there. Looking forward to the Peterson video when it is finished. You mentioned Jonathan Haidt. Lately I've been feeling the same about Jonathan Haidt as you do about Jordan Peterson. There is a lot to like there, but I have disagreements, and I'm trying to figure out where these disagreements come from. I believe it is his anti-dignity positions. Dignity is very similar to wokeness. The biggest problem with wokeness is everybody has different definitions on BOTH sides. It has become pseudo-defined as "we don't like what the other side likes", which is a bit of a joke. The REAL definition comes from Aristotle's "Nichomachean Ethics", and I know anyone will ask "Was "wokeness" even a concept 2400 years ago?" and the truth is Aristotle didn't have a word for it. In Nichomachean Ethics Book IV Chapter 6, Aristotle had this to say: "In gatherings of men, in social life and the interchange of words and deeds, some men are thought to be obsequious, viz. those who to give pleasure praise everything and never oppose, but think it their duty 'to give no pain to the people they meet'" In more modern terms this means "brown-nosing", "pandering", or "patronizing" others. "while those who, on the contrary, oppose everything and care not a whit about giving pain are called churlish and contentious." In more modern terms, "belittling", or just "being mean" ("trolling" perhaps?). "That the states we have named are culpable is plain enough, and that the middle state is laudable- that in virtue of which a man will put up with, and will resent, the right things and in the right way; but no name has been assigned to it, though it most resembles friendship." Note: "Friendship" here is the Greek word "philia" literally brotherly love, so it is general friendship for all. Aristotle was describing being an ally, or being "woke" as a virtue. Note how the anti-woke crowd are 100% either brown-nosing or belittling towards others all the time. Haidt expressed his anti-dignity and anti-wokeness in this essay: https://heterodoxacademy.org/blog/the-two-fiduciary-duties-of-professors/ Sadly his mistake was made in his book "The Righteous Mind" where he listed five virtues popular in American Politics. Haidt described two values Caring and Fairness, seem to be universal values of both the left and the right, but three others Loyalty, Authority and Sanctity seem to be values held exclusively by the right to morally justify their positions. The book attempted "liberty" as an exclusive left virtue, but it is actually Dignity: Recognize the worth of others as humans, and their right to achieve their own happiness. It is confusing because it is not a trait you possess but a trait in how you treat others. To show someone dignity is to allow them to find their own happiness. Not showing dignity is belittling their choices and ideas. To say it is a left wing virtue is because, these days it is the exact opposite of "purity". Didn't have to be this way, but the current thinking on "purity" is being anti-woke. What's worse is his first book "The Happiness Hypothesis" was closely related to this, but he missed the point. So yeah, that's my problem with Haidt. I agree with a lot of what he says on other topics, like what you said about "kill the internet". Haidt and I are both Gen Xers, and we didn't have phones at all when we were in school, so I am personally in favor of returning to that era.

Adorne Sibley | The Corners Within

Thinking about what CJ said about VHS tapes compared to Netflix. Media consumption these days can be like media obesity or media over indulgence in the way that the ease and accessibility of media is constant and akin to snacking. Back a hundred years ago it takes effort to get food, hunting, farming, going to the grocer. Less preservatives, less options for keeping food longer. It took effort to get food like it takes effort to put in a VHS tape or go to a cinema. Now it is so easy to sit there and snack on tiktok and just devour content mindlessly. It is not necessarily about thing but any overindulgence is dangerous. And it doesn't mean that older media cannot be consumed this way, as we see with classic films being on Netflix doesn't mean that you're not going to just binge those films back to back. I find the same thing in emulators versus physical games on the original systems. It takes time and effort to put that game into the system and turn it on and play versus clicking on the file and jumping from one game to the next. When we have to take time to put on the media, we value it more. Because it is our own time that we value even if we don't recognise that. Limits/limitations create value.

I know this post is 8 months old, but CJ ripping a flawless Žižek impression while jReg and Art Chad stare at him like two fucking Muppets continues to keep me awake at night and i must say something
