Hey guys and girls, hope this Tuesday finds you well. I’ve been working on story outlines and editing the last chapter of King of Champions. I should have the edited chapter up Thursday, depending. I have to apologize guys, I know the chapter wasn’t up to my usual standards, but I really wanted to get it out by the end of the month. That always fights against me.

Anyway, I have some more questions for all of you. Shocking, I know, heh.

This month we’re going to split them up into different fandoms, so we can keep the conversations from overlapping overmuch. This one is going to be the Harry Potter, while I will post the Ranma questions tomorrow.

First, is A Third Path To The Future and a question that has often plagued me.

I had thought at one point that Emma Frost would be killed in the course of the story. She came close several times, but I could never quite convince myself that she would really die in the scenarios she faced. This has brought to my mind the idea of killing off main characters, and whether or not, at this point in the story, it makes any sense at all?

My first implication is no. With the emergency teleportation array, their own skills, and so forth, it would not make sense, for, say, Hela or Ororo to be slain in battle with Thanos. That the very idea is drama for drama’s sake, and is unnecessary. But I would like to see your opinion on it.

Next is Fate Touched In Middle Earth. Here my question have to do more with world building and the far future rather than anything immediate.

1. Question one, on the nature of the fellowship. As everyone should be aware, the fellowship is what the band of travelers that Frodo Baggins and Aragorn are part of after leaving Rivendell. The original consist of, four hobbits, Merry, Pippin, Frodo, Sam, two humans, Aragorn and Boromir, one Gandalf, one dwarf in the form of Gimli, and one elf, Legolas. Now obviously I’m going to change quite a bit here. Like, a LOT. But the ones I am most uncertain of are the hobbits. I have solid plans for the rest, but not the hobbits. I’ve recently decided I will be showing some bits of Bilbo and Frodo over the next few decades (in the story LOL) so should I go whole hog and just get rid of Sam, Merry and Pippin? Or just Pippin? Their role in the later stories are important in a way, but only when tied to other characters – Treeebeard and the Ents in particular, then Merry and Eoywn against the Witch King. Specifically, I am thinking of leaving Pippin behind entirely, and maybe Sam as well, although that is more up in the air. I do not think that the Ring Bearer’s journey will be anywhere near canon, so the need for Sam to bolster Frodo’s spirits will not be there.

2. More of a world building question: what would a purely dwarven army look like? My idea at this point is heavy infantry-based, with a large engineering corps. Think old roman legions, able to throw up defenses quickly. For larger units, artillery – ballista, catapults – would make an appearance, but would also constitute the majority of the army’s baggage train. Otherwise, the dwarves would all be expected to carry everything they might need in the field. Heavy use of quick fortifications, formations for some dwarves, while shields and axes for others. All dwarven armies would be highly organized, but most – beyond the aforementioned pike users – would still be individual warriors in battle rather than have a major emphasis on unit cohesion, dwarves can also see in the dark just as much or better than orcs, so can do forced marches, encampments or even battle at night.

3. ‘Man, master of Horses’. This is for my Tolkien lore fans. I have read the Silmarillion, and there are instances of riders being mentioned, but… I don’t think there is any mention of major cavalry units being used by the elves, to say nothing of charges or horse archers used en masse. So is Treebeard right, was Mankind the ones to really master horses and use them in war? If so, I will need to make a point of this in the fic when exploring Gondor, not just Rohan.

4. This is something Beleriond brought up.  Traditionally, elves would exchange rings during the wedding ceremony. But should this tradition have changed since the Wars of the Ring, when the One Ring’s existence was discovered? Could go either way, really.

And now for King of Champions.

1. How interested are people in seeing more training time, specifically combat training scenes? I got a large majority of the class/school time stuff over with in the last chapter, although it will continue in the next chapter, alas. But I’m interested to see if people want to read about Team ANVL and the training exercises that Harry has devised for them, or their fighting against Team RWBY. Again, I probably would only show a few of these, and then start to skip around to important events. That way we can start speeding up the story. But really, which is more interesting: Arturia dealing with a Grimm assault or Team ANVL fighting one another and learning more about their varying abilities?

2. I didn’t show Salem’s reaction to the events of Initiation in the last chapter. But I am wondering if I should at all. Should I show Salem’s thoughts/actions regularly or only occasionally? Is she more Sauron, certain in her position, with only big events or mysteries making her react. Or is she more like Tyrannus, who needs to modify her plans and react as things change?

3. Since no one commented on it in the chapter thread, I figured I would ask here: what did everyone think of Tia's Semblance? I am wondering if I made her overpowered, or her power a little too straightforward.

I don't have much to say but I agree that Champions would probably flow better with a few training scenes and skipping to the important events. On the other hand Salem. To me she always seemed really detached from nearly everything that didn't have to do with Ozpin, so she should probably be just an occasional POV when she is reacting to something that has to do with her pawns, Ozpin's actions, or really eye catching events.

A) I deplore stories where: War means death, let's kill arbitrary character C, just to make the point that war is terrible. To be honest, it would kind of leave a bad taste in my mouth. B) Question one, on the nature of the fellowship. In Tolkien's book version: all four hobbits served his plot. Pippin's use of the Palantir was crucial in realizing Sauron's move on Minas Tirith. Merry saved Faramir's live (I think, it has been 40 years since I read the LoTR in its entirety). Merry's stabbing of the Witch King was crucial in his death, etc. So, the question is: what shape will *your* plot take? Which characters' stories are you telling. I like your stories, so I'm fairly indifferent to which characters are in the fellowship, because I am confident you will think through the plot and story arc implications. No pressure, right? LOL. Seriously though, I have faith the story will be an enjoyable read.

Landrogar

I liked what you turned that abomination of a trilogy into and so far I found very little that I would complain about in any of your stories. But what I also really liked in Lord of the Rings is how Tolkien portrayed the impact of war and strife on the innocence of the hobbits. So I would plea that you don't cut away more hobbits than you really think is required. Or maybe let them come to Rivendell and see how you want to go from there. As for dwarven troops, I would recommend that you look at the game "Battle for Middle-Earth 2". It's one of the only strategy games I ever liked and my favorite faction were always the dwarves. For example: they have heavy armored chariots drawn by giant boars from which they can throw exploding kegs at the few enemies they don't run over. Now to King of Champions: I've liked what you did so far and while some training would be enjoyable to read, too much, I think, would be tedious after a certain time. If I understood it right, Tia's semblance is basically Hallibel's Resurreccion, right? I liked that too. To your question about Salem: I think showing her sparsely would be best. I've read too many stories where the author gave too much away when showing the villains, destroying the entire suspension of wondering what is going to happen next. It's one of the reasons I stopped reading "Horse for the Force", because you spoiled the mystery of what would happen if Grievous basically orcestrated the war by showing the whole conversation between him and the Separatists' admirals. And as a small apendix: I sadly didn't get a notification for your present poll. I would have voted for the Kuroinu one and have hoped you would write the Harry Potter one. I'm simply not too much of a fan of Ranma. I hope you find this helpful in some way and wish you a pleasant evening.

Beleriond

Third Path: All the main characters are powerful enough to tank a hit if they need to as well, so it seems unlikely to me that any of Harry's partners would be one hit kills. Emma might, but she is not a frontline fighter, so no. Some of the weaker custodes, maybe. They would need to be struck with something powerful enough to get through their armour and probably vaporize most of their bodies, so Thanos' energy beams maybe. Fate Touched: 1) Samwise I think is still necessary for Frodo's moral support. Merry and Pippin's roles in rallying the Ents could be filled another way, maybe by more nature aligned characters, Radagast, Galadriel, Tauriel, etc. Gandalf might not even need to be brought back, since Harry will probably kill the Balrog. Eowyn's role is interesting. What would happen if she teamed up with Tauriel to take down the Witch King? I think they could be good friends. 2) I agree with your assessment, though for a ranged component, maybe crossbows. Dwarves have limited reach, so they can't draw back bows very far, but crossbows just require strength which they have in spades. Dwarves also have good eyesight as you said, and like mechanical things. 3) It might be a moral question for the elves, you know binding a creature to your will and all that. I can definitely see the elves only adopting horses after humans already domesticated them, and then trying to treat them with respect. The idea of an elf just seeing a wild animal and deciding to enslave it seems unlikely. Thranduil's elk is a possible exception for many reasons. 4) I just think it's an interesting question. Giving magic rings certainly has a whole new meaning since Annatar. King of Champions: 1) It depends o how interesting the scenes are. Will they be discovering and practicing new techniques, especially Harry mastering other branches of elemental magic? I would certainly love to see him training with Goodwitch. To answer your question, Arturia, but I could be convinced the other way too. 2) She's immortal, and has most of the planet under her control, so I would say Salem is more like Sauron. I'm sure she had some of her spies observing the battlefield though, so Harry would have definitely piqued her interest. Some reaction from her would be great. 3) I liked it, the berserker aspect seems like a fair weakness. To my understanding though, aura generally doesn't change the physical body, so the bone plates are weird. Maybe a hard-light hologram armour would have been better.

ATP: While intellectually I understand that killing a main character can be useful for a story. It's something that I never liked. And in that case yes it would be very cheap, with all the precaution in place. Fate1: Hard to say, without knowing what you intend to change (and i don't want to know yet.) still I think that Sam should come. Fate2: Yes, Infantry work really well for Dwarf. In some other fantasy setting we see Dwarf mount on some creature like Badger or Mole, but I'm not sure if it would work in LOTR. Fate3: Yes, I could see it. Elf are in the forest so Horse wouldn't make sense, Dwarf even worse, Hobbit is out of question. It could be one of the rare thing that Human taught the elves. Fate4: That would be a nice touch. Perhaps Necklace? King1: I think we can skip most of the training unless it show a new technique, a new combo or something. I'm curious to see Arturia in action. King2: No, let her in the background and only react when thing start to go wrong for her. Perhaps when Harry's settlement start to be successful and repel a Grimm assault? King3: It's a very cool semblance, we don't see many transformation semblance in the show, non that I can remember anyway. It's a little strong yes, but it's purely combat focused, no side utility and it carry some stigma because of the look. I think it's fine.

Third Path The idea of killing off a main characters should always be about the purpose it serves; this is not a television show or movie series where actors decide they aren't doing it any more. While some would say that it is only drama for the sake of drama, I would say that you need to decide if it fits into a series of events that not only could the person die, but if it will it lead to something you want to deal with in your story, which could even be drama, so long as it makes sense for the overall story line. Fate Touched 1. When it comes to altering the Fellowship, I think the decision comes down to what you can make believable for the characters. Don't forget that in the books, Frodo and Sam are the only ones told to go while Merry and Pippin volunteered. Once they reached Rivendell, Frodo volunteers and the others demand to go for him, not the adventure, because they have all been great friends for decades. (Frodo and his friends are around 50 in the books after all) You would also have to account for the difficulty in separating the duos. Sam would be easy to leave behind so long as he never leaves the Shire at all. Merry and Pippin come along in the books because they know something is wrong and Sam tells them about it. They bypassed that in the movies by having the accidental encounter that sweeps them into going along until they continue from momentum. You just have to decide how far you want to go to break up the duos to cherry pick. 2. For the Dwarven Army, I think you have the right of it. I also think you could look to the Hobbit movies as a good way to see how such an army would function. When they were traveling and forming up, it was very regimented and showed the majority on foot with a relatively small number on goats as cavalry. We didn't get a look at the logistical train but they obviously were quick to set up the launchers behind they hill and Thorin and company were able to erect fortifications quickly with only a small number. Then, once the battle had started, the Dwarves mostly did work as individuals with only the occasional group effort. Take all that as you will. 3. While I am not certain about if it was said in the various books, I always felt that given the racial dispositions, Man were the ones to master horses for war. It was shown that Elves were capable of forming close connections with horses and could train them very well, but that they would not have formed a cavalry unit in that fashion because to limit themselves when they are so fleet-footed already would not have made sense. It really was only man that ever seemed to be associated with warhorses. 4. When it comes to exchanging rings, I have no idea if they would change that or not. I would say that it depends on how stubborn you want to portray them in regards to the topic. Right after the betrayal, was there an Elf couple that declared that they would not give in to such fear or was the disgust so great that they forsook the practice. King of Champions 1. I would say that it should not be about if we want to see more training time so much as if you want to give away the development of their group skills. If we see more training, we will have to see how they learn to work together and use their powers with each other. If not, you can pull a group combination out of your hat when the need arises without having to give anything away first. 2. When it comes to seeing Salem's POV, I think less is more but it comes down to how transparent you want her plans to be as things diverge further from canon. Do you want your audience to know who/what is coming for our characters next, or do you want to surprise us? 3. Finally, Tia's Semblance. Honestly, I'm of the opinion that her Semblance is no more overpowered than any number of others that have been shown. As for the power being straightforward, I would say that the varied complexities of the other Semblances should allow for anything from the simplest to the most complex things that have you wondering how it makes sense. If you are that worried about it, then just make sure to put in some limitations that only being able to analyze the ability with repeated use would show. Good Luck and Happy Writing

One point that can be considered for the Fate question 3): Elves live really long and are strongly tied to nature, but horses live only around 25-30 years(according to fast search). Riders usually create a strong bound with "their" horse and would feel their loss quite strongly. For humans the lifetime difference would be much smaller if you consider a rider to be given his young horse at around 10 or 12 they could basically live their whole life with just one single horse or maybe 2. Elves would basically lose their companion every few years and I cannot imagine many elves to like this constant loss of a dear companion. So I would think that elves have some horses for fast travel between destinations but not really the large amount needed for military use, also they might not use saddles because of them not needing them to be comfortable on a horse and a lack of such decreases the military use of horses to pulling things mostly.(steer ups are really useful for the military use of horses)

Diego D'Andrea

for third the death of Hela or Ororo, would seem a little improbable, and personally, I would not like it at all. For King, I vote for some Training and Fighting with Team Rwby. Tia's semblance isn't all that overpower compared to Arturia semblance.

ATP: i agree that character deaths at this point don't make sense. from a story perspective, the story seems to be winding down towards it's conclusion, and it wouldn't really be an appropriate time for a character death because there basically wouldn't be enough time for the grieving and recovery/moving on afterwards that it would need. additionally, within the story you are correct as well, that while any individual main character may be defeated, they have enough safeguards that any deaths would honestly feel more like 'author says so' than 'this feels like a reasonable progression'. that said, some sort of semi-permanent debilitation or injury isn't out of the question, like someone losing an arm before they get portkeyed away or emma's brain gets overused and stressed and she's weakened or something Fate Touched: 1, I love sam and would be really sad to see him go. also, character wise, i don't really know that you can justify sam WILLINGLY letting frodo go alone unless you change his character. my take on sam is that eh would 100% follow frodo even if he was told by Eru Iluvitar himself to stay behind, so unless you have him restrained or frodo and co sneak away, and even then i wouldn't be surprised to have sam catch up a month down the road. that said, merry and pippin can either or both be missing much easier, because much of what they were essential for in the story can be resolved in alternate ways or worked around, and their characters would be more willing to be convinced to stay behind. 2, while roman style dwarves certainly makes sens, i honestly think they'd be more greek, with their greater emphasis on personal ability. the greek style has less middle-level leadership than the romans, which i feel suits the dwarves better, that they would be more likely to have one high commander with a few lieutenants but not a bunch of imbedded NCO's. also, there is no reason dwarves shouldn't make great use of crossbows. the primary downside is the raw strength needed to rearm them, and dwarves have that strength while not having the arm length for throwing javelins like the romans or bows like the elves, but organized dwarves should have a lot of crossbows. 4. i feel like the elves would be more likely to maintain the tradition and try not to let the actions of the bad guys corrupt their traditions King of Champions: 1. i would prefer to see more of ANVL than to see arturia beating up grimm 2. i definitely feel like salem is more sauron. sure she might lose a battle here or there, but she's got millenia of attrition on her side and is absolutely confident in her eventual victory, so she doesn't really need to tweak her plans except in unusal situations (at least thats her perspective). she's been doing it so long that she probably only really pays attention to what ozpin does because he's the only one she even considers a possible threat, so it will take her a long time, if ever, to recognize the danger that harry would pose to her rule 3. i think her power is acceptable but will need to stay balanced. it's basically all the benefits of aura but better, with there being more defense and strength and maybe speed, but at the same time it still needs to be possible to overwhelm it or wear it down. it's better for her to be captain america than superman

A Third Path: I tend to agree with your statement about drama for drama’s sake. Scenes like that always leave a bad taste in my mouth, when it becomes obvious that an author has decided a plot point in advance and make it happen, regardless of whether or not it actually makes sense. I don’t have an issue with a character dying if it is well thought out, but don’t do it just to do it. Fate Touched: 1. It’s difficult to really answer without knowing your long-term plans for this fic. I would say to include them if you think that they serve a purpose, add to the overall story, and if it makes logical sense for the council to send them at all. However, if any of those things aren’t true, then you should feel free to leave them behind. Basically, just because they did something in the original is no reason for them to be in your story. One of the worst things I’ve discovered in fanfiction in general is what I call “canon shoehorning”. This is when an author forces certain events to match canon, even when other events in the story make it illogical to do so. It happens all the time. You don’t do this a lot, but it does come up sometimes. A few scenes in Making Waves come to mind. 2. I like your ideas on this quite a bit. I probably would have gone the other way on the unit cohesion bit, emphasizing discipline and working together more than the other races, but that’s just a personal preference. 3. I like this idea. Kind of an interesting nod to Tolkien on a line that I have never seen explored before. It’s good to give humans their own advantages too when compared to other races. It’s way too easy to show Dwarves and Elves as just being naturally superior to humans in every way, so it’s nice to give humans some kind of edge. I like the idea that they’re more creative, come up with more new stuff (i.e. domesticating horses), and they breed faster making them more numerous, but the individuals tend to be more ambitious and greedier, which often winds up weakening the society as a whole through pointless wars. 4. I don’t think this makes much sense. One evil ring was created with magic, so now all rings are bad. That’s like if warriors stopped using swords because their enemy used a sword to kill their king. Besides, the elves actively use the three, even if they do it in secret, so the idea that rings in general are distrusted/disliked seems illogical to me. King of Champions: 1. I would rather see the training time. I think it’s important to see if the addition of Harry leads the canon characters to develop new skills/abilities/techniques, as well as how they stack up to each other. As readers we’ve got a perception of the relative strengths and weaknesses of each canon character, and that could damage our understanding of the story if our perception is different from yours, so I think it would be beneficial for you to spell it out early on. 2. I could see you going either way with this. If I had to choose, I would make her closer to Sauron. She is immortal after all and is probably certain that she has seen everything, and that Ozpin is the only person who can really oppose her. In fact, I think that she would have a lot of trouble seeing anyone other than him as anything other than insects. That said, the presence of a true equal (Ozpin) among her enemies is a reasonable justification for her to take them seriously if you want to go the other way. 3. I like it a lot. Having a tank to go alongside Harry seems like a great choice. I’m really excited to see a fight between her and Yang.

Lictor Magnus

ATP: I think guardians death was enough. If it’s just being done for the sake of drama and not to push the plot or someone’s character development forward someway then it’s not worth it. For Champion I think the training scenes are nice. Most people going into a fanfiction will probably be familiar with the main characters but for the people that may find it from the Harry Potter side of things then it’s worth it to explain how everyone fights. Tias semblance is cool. I’m untested to see what happens when she goes all out.

Megaslayer321a

ATP I like Main Character Death, when it first became popular in medias, which for me was the first season of GOT, I thought it was a strong tool for authors to show that a MC or secondary MC is not any more or less killable than any other character and if they do something they will suffer the consequences. That being said I think killing of a MC just for the sake of killing off an MC is a poor decision, at this point in the story it just doesn't seem like it will serve any purpose beyond shock value. Along with that Emma is the calculative sort of person that always tries to put herself in the safest position she can, if there was a time to kill her off and make it mean something to me it would have been before the second Elder Crystal event. For me that was a turning point for Emma where she learnt just what it meant to get into the relationship with all of them, and just how dangerous and fulfilling it would be. Fate Touched I don't really have any opinions on this, as it isn't a story I read. King of Champions 1: I think it would be a good idea to show how Harry will impact the other teams in the early chapters before things really start to kick off. I don't think it should be the main focus for too long, but for the next chapter or two I think it should be there, it would also give you a chance to delve deeper into the Beacon Curriculum like you did last chapter as we don't really get a chance to see what is actually taught there so you have a lot of freedom to use that to impact how the characters change from cannon as well. 2: I think this a technique that you have a lot of experience with and one you put to great use in both your Star Wars fics, and I will say when I think of Salem I do see a bit of similarity to Sidious in that they are both long term planners. Sidious in the way he works towards the Great Plan, he has been working towards it all his life and his predecessors have been working towards it their whole lives, and while he does see the end of it coming up he is not rushing towards it cause he knows if he does mistakes could be made. Salem on the other hand is an immortal who has lived for 100s perhaps even over a 1000 years and in that time would have learnt patients, planning, and the best ways to gain retribution. That being said I think we shouldn't jump into Salem's thought processes and ideas all that often, only when it truly matters when something big comes up to mess with not just her plans but everyone's plans. 3: Not too sure honestly what was shown of her semblance didn't show it as overpowered to me, that being said that could change with how you use it going forward.

Flamethrowing

ATP: 1. If you had to think many times about it and concluded against it, then it was probably the right choice. Given the story is ending soon, I think Emma and the crew have deserved the happy ending. Not every expectation needs to be subverted for the sake of it. Sometimes things should just be played straight because it is expected (Case in point: I think everyone wanted S8 of GoT to have a Jon vs Night King fight, not the thing we got.) Fate: 1. Sam, Merry and Pippin were at least, the heart of the fellowship. Sam in particular, acted as Frodo's moral compass and unconditional emotional support needed to carry the burden of the one ring. Merry and Pippin were also instrumental in their own way as their seemingly mundane attributes were exactly what helped see the fellowship's journey to the end. Overall, the fellowship hobbits were by Tolkien's deliberate design an unimpressive bunch but it was used to show that even the most ordinary folk can fight the greatest of tyrants in their own way.

vimesenthusiast

Merry I will give you. He helped Eowyn kill the witch king, and saved Faramir's life. But Pippin - no. Simple military necessity forced Sauron to attack Minas Tirith. That and his own hatred for Gondor and the remnants of the men of the sea. As for leaving a bad taste in your mouth and why, yeah, I fully agree it can come off like that.

vimesenthusiast

Hobbits: going to Rivendell is a given. And these will be slightly different Hobbits from what is in the books. I will be showing the differences between this Bilbo and the book version, and the impact he has on Frodo. Dwarves: chariots... ehh.... see the problem is that chariots are good on flat, level ground. They could be used in Rohan. Around the mountain... not so much. I could maybe have one of the dwarven Houses use them, but not across the whole race. Exploding barrels though, maybe. But I think Harry would recognize what that kind of thing might entail, and I don't want to go down the gunpowder route. Are you saying you didn't get a notification for the patron present poll? Or both it, and the other two polls? You're the eight person to mention it... not good.

vimesenthusiast

But consider, Thanos is thinking about when to step in, and might do so before Harry is ready to face him while Dr. Strange is off dealing with the Skrull fleet. Thanos could do a lot of damage to any of the battlefields should he step in before Harry is ready to face him. Fate: 1. Huh. I… honestly, my thoughts on Sam are a bit up and down. Loved him in Fellowship, even Two Towers, but I think he had a few Gary Stu moments in Return of the King. On the other hand, would that matter if Frodo doesn’t need to break off from the company? As for Gandalf ‘dying’ I couldn’t possibly comment at this time. Eowyn… let’s just say I have some funny plans for her, and that Tauriel will get a kick out of her. Harry… not so much. 2. I like the idea of crossbows, good point. Not dedicated units, but dwarves make light of heavy weight, so they could actually carry crossbows and bolts as part of their normal kit. At least those Houses that have standing armies anyway. Thorin – the Longbeards - don’t have one of those at the moment, but will build one. 3. I rather don’t think they would need to bind horses – the elves have always had a way with good beasts. But with that said, I can see them not being willing to force horses into battle en masse, considering it murder. The elk is not canon LOL. 4. It is indeed, hence why I mention it here. KoC 1. Ehh, not really. Not until the training with Goodwitch – her use of the scientific method and forcing Harry to realize he has more control of his magic and should start to really think in more… expansive terms. So I will stick to Arturia for the large-scale combat scenes. 2. Think I already pointed out there are some strict limitations to Salem’s ability to direct the Grimm from afar. Still she is indeed more like Sauron. 3. Eh, hard light holograms do exist in this world, but I am keeping the bone plates. Aura does change the body, Semblances just take that power and do strange things with it.

vimesenthusiast

Fate2. Badger or mole? Huh… can’t recall anything like that that. Except maybe Narnia?

Beleriond

Third Path: I agree with you, but Harry's wives are all either powerful enough to holdout against Thanos until help can arrive, or wouldn't be close to the front-lines in Emma's case. Less powerful members of the Custodes, he could definitely take out. Thanos' main targets are Harry and Jean, so whoever is with them when they step out onto the stage is most likely to be killed. Unless, one of his children has a major defeat (Nebula), but I think that Jean is going to announce herself pretty spectacularly before then. Fate: 1) Sounds fun. Looking forward to it. 2) The Longbeards in Erebor will definitely need a standing army. The Easterlings are to the east, there are still lesser dragons to the north, and Orcs/goblins all around. I was thinking of massed formations, similar to musket formations, with Dwarves bearing heavy shields stepping in fromt while the crossbowmen reloaded. 3) I understand that, but sitting on an animals back is still taking it away from its role in nature and putting it into a submissive role, so I don't think the idea would have even occurred to an elf. I know it's not canon, but it did look pretty cool in the movie. Dwarves and Hobbits are also out for taming horses because of size concerns, so that does just leave Men. 4) Thank you. KoC: 1) Fair enough. 2) I know, but she had six of her telepathic spy drones around Beacon when she started her attack, losing one or two for evolving the Grimm. Note: I'm not saying she immediately understands how powerful and unique Harry is to have his own inherent magic. Maybe Salem just thinks that Ozma has been splitting his power again, or Harry somehow managed to gain the power of a maiden. If she knew he was the first true magical male on the planet since Ozma rejected her and split his power, she would launch a full-scale invasion of Beacon immediately, but she wouldn't know that. 3) Fair, I just meant like hardened Aura.

Third Path: Will lead to something I want to do… good point. I don’t honestly think the story needs drama. Not personal drama anyway. There’s going to be enough drama with the Titan War and everything else. So while I think having more of the Custodes dying might add to the realism, I don’t think I will make the jump from that to having Ororo or Hela dying against Thanos. Thanks! Fate: 1. Hmmm… I had felt like having Merry or Pippin along to Rivendell was an obvious point to break them off – to send them to the Shire and Bree to warn of the growing power of Sauron, like Elrond wanted. Sam… eh. Sam’s position as Frodo’s support is big in the books, but given all the changes I am bouncing around in my head for later in the story, it might not be necessary. So maybe just him not coming along is a good idea. 2. Yeah, the boar cavalry is a new thing for them – an invention from Dain. 3. I am uncertain if they would see it as limiting themselves, so much as not seeing the benefit of heavy cavalry – which is all about the weight and the charge. Not exactly an elven style of warfare. The Noldor maybe at the height of their power, but we are several ages past that LOL. That, and I don’t know if elves would be willing to lead docile animals, animals they have bonded with, into battle knowing they are going to be much more attractive targets than the elves themselves to any archers on the other side. 4. Exactly. The betrayal of the rings was a big moment in Elven society. Prior to that, you could argue that elves in Middle Earth were slowly rebuilding. After… no. KoC: 1. In the original so little is shown of how RWBY grows together, that when they do their attacks it comes out of the blue and is quite jarring. You never get a real sense of the passage of time at Beacon. It is really annoying. So I want to at least mention the various training exercises. 2. Hmm… I had not considered if I wanted her plans to come as a surprise to my readers. That’s a very good point. Thanks! 3. I’ve already thought of a limitation – the impact on her mind, and sense of touch. Use it too often, her sense of touch degrades dramatically for set periods of time. And if she uses it at full strength, it impacts her ability to think.

I rather think cavalrymen bonding with their horses is a bit of romantic silliness in the main... I don't see the men of Gondor doing so, but Rohan does, a societyal difference there. But I could definitely see elves not being willing to put themselves through that.

(Sorry about the spacing, my phone's enter key would not work) ATP: I am not a fan of main character death, especially when it comes to the main relationships and/or harem. They just put me in a bad mood for the rest of the story and drop me pretty easily. Of course I can understand main character death, but most of the time I come to fanfics to see how these relationships and characters acting in new ways interact with the stories their in. Killing one of the girls off just feels like unnecessary and, especially with Thanos, predictable drama. Fate: When it comes to The Fellowship, I honestly don't know how to feel about whether to keep the other Hobbits or not because I actually like them a good amount, but I don't know how much with Bilbo changing will change Frodo. Hell, Sam was my favorite for a long time. But Gollum is also dead so there will be less temptations for Frodo along the roa, at least from that particular creature. I don't mind either way if you get rid of all of them, or only keep 1 or 2. Champions: I'm not really interested in too much training. I feel like last chapter with Pyrrha fighting Yang was good enough for me. I'm fine with see Arturia fighting a Grimm horde, but not for too long. I would like to keep the story moving. Lastly for Salem, I think the "Sauron" option is fine. Adding too many plot adjustments over everything will just get stale. Seeing her get outsmarted or take a heavy hit and then having to adjust feels more satisfying.

ATP: I agree with your inclination, at this point it would seem like contrived drama. Fate Touched: 1) I think it could be interesting either way, but reducing the number of focus characters to a smaller (though still substantial) number may be the better way to go, if things are changed enough their previous role is no longer needed. - Not great at this sort of world building, so will leave the rest to others King of Champions: 1) Of the two listed, I definitely think the training would be more interesting, and even in general, I like the idea of seeing some more training (too much would get boring, but you are good at balancing that). 2) Don't know the source enough to say. 3) Don't know the source enough to give power level feedback, but I thought it was interesting enough.

2. If you have the tech and wealth to make shields high-quality enough that they won't be significantly damaged by enemy blows, and the strength and stamina to wield tower shields like bucklers, and derive no benefit from agility (e.g. because of already wearing full or part plate armor), and don't _use_ a shield, you're an idiot. Dain's armies in the Hobbit book are described as all having shields. And shields really pair well with shield walls. Shields protect you from only one direction, but if you have other guys to guard your sides, that fixes that issue. One important question is about crossbows. The Numenoreans are described as having them, but they aren't mentioned in the books. Though pretty much every non-book medium (movie, games, TTRPG) has included them and often associated them with the dwarves. Ballista are suggested in the books, and the ancient greeks, romans, and chinese had crossbows at a quite low technological level. The point being that the presence of ranged weapons allows you to have more than just the front line engaging the enemy and is kind of tactically obligate, especially when you have the possibility of flying enemies (eagles, nazgul-birds), or when you're making use of fortifications. And if you _are_ having many crossbowmen, that's another reason to be using formations. The description of Dain's army in The Hobbit suggests that they can actually get by without a baggage train, just each carrying enough food for weeks while marching in full armor, and that they got to the Lonely Mountain my marching through the night, presumably after marching the previous day, and were ready for battle in the morning. Tl;dr I think the dwarves would make very, very heavy use of formations, involving pikes, shieldwalls, and crossbows. 3. https://www.quora.com/Did-the-Elves-in-Tolkiens-world-have-any-cavalry-for-large-scale-battles It sounds like maybe humans invented _tack_? And thus presumably the ability to ride in armor, to have beasts of burden, and to fight mounted in melee with decent footing and momentum-enhanced force (e.g. lances). KoC 1: Yes, more training scenes please.

GreedOnGreed

KOC: I think showing ANVL's training is to make team bonding look more natural, group tactics can be tried during class duels but also RWBY would suffer crushing defeat especially if ANVL doesn't hold back so I guess it would be interesting to see how they intend to improve the use of their semblances and maybe learn some aura manipulation techniques like the ManaBurst or the Ren’s shield. The fact that Pyrrha nearly lost her weapon against Yang should have made errs think about the need for some secondary weapons for everyone. Mekashift weapons should be much less durable and require much more maintenance but magic can help with them. For me Salem is a suicidal depressed whose main pastime is the ruin of her ex-husband, she must have destroyed many kingdoms over millennia so probably Salem shouldn't care much what they do since she could easily destroy them. Yandere Salem? maybe Ozma has secular blue balls because she keeps sending armies of grimms whenever he's in a relationship with someone. Counting all the side effects of Tia's semblance it seems a bit weak to me, since the armor looks like a shark maybe she also has a diving talent and maybe Tia could absorb grimm ashes with which she could fire some Cero Or some kind of Shinra Tensei? I guess Tia only involuntarily attracts grimms when she transforms but it can be countered by Ren's ability. Harry has complained about the lack of good classic literature but perhaps her bibliophile little sister could publish some of her stories that he has told her?

A Third Path To The Future I'm against killing off any of the main characters. It seems unneeded at this point. You've already driven home death among the characters during the Asgard campaign. At this point, it would simply be adding unneeded shock value, while damaging any real chance at a happy ending. Fate Touched In Middle Earth. 1. As much of a fan following as Sam seems to gather...I always kinda felt all the hobbits except Frodo were kinda unneeded. While Merry and Pippin both got done dirty by the movies, the two being portrayed as far far more capable in the books, the simple truth is that they don't functionally add much to the story. And their inclusion in the fellowship at all was, frankly, one of the weirdest things Tolkien ever did. Here was a small, tactical group of elite insurgents intended to slip into Mordor. They, logically, take along: A Badass Elf A Badass Elf-Trained Super Human A Human Warrior of skill with political connections that could help them. An veteran Dwarf Warrior The single most powerful wizard on Middle Earth that isn't a traitor A hobbit ringbearer that has successfully proven resistant to the ring. ...and three other midgets with no combat skills or purpose? Just...what? Either keeping the team even smaller, or else sending another veteran elf and dwarf pair to even out the racial numbers would have made more sense. The only reason to take more hobbits was if you intended to play hot-potato with the ring to reduce it's corruption. Which totally could have helped...but they didn't do that at all. Frankly, I'm all for you changing the lineup. Obviously, Legolas is out anyway, given that he's chained down being a King. Since that's the case, and you're presumably adding Harry and his lady, there's no real reason not to perform some more surgery to the team. 2. Honestly, my impression of a dwarven army is pretty close to yours. The only two things I could add is a reminder about their experimental cavalry that's already made an apperance. And that I would expect larger clans to have a core of dedicated guard that didn't dissolve into individual combat, used to anchor the rest of the dwarves around. Without that, there would be little hope of holding any kind of unit cohesion in place. 3. Huh. I...hadn't actually thought about the horse thing before. It does fit though. Hobbits and Dwarves obviously don't use horses for equally obvious reasons. And elves tend to treat all living things as people. I will note that I think there is a mention of a mounted elven unit that bails out the dwarves near Rivendale in The Hobbit. But it was a small force, likely with each elf having a dedicated personal mount. 4. Honestly? I doubt it would change. The elves were the least affected by the whole ring snafu, simply because their rings were never corrupted. Add in their traditionalism and I doubt it would have even occurred to them to change it. King of Champions. 1. Honestly, seeing some of their training in snippets seems like a good way to show how the team works out...but only in limited amounts so as not to slow the pacing down too much. As for Arturia? Her escapades don't interest me at all, unless they intersect with Harry. Unless something she does is critical to the plot, I'd prefer not to see her point of view at all. And that despite the fact that I actually like her as a character. 2. I'd say she'd more like Sauron, given how things have basically gone wholly her way for a long long time. On the other hand, because of how you set it up, her reaction to the specific events would feel right to show. Simply because we already know she was somewhat actively monitoring and curious. 3. Tia's Semblance? Eh. It's interesting, at the very least. And I wouldn't worry about it being overpowered. Harry is arguably that...and honestly the good guys in RWBY could really use an injection of strength. They were kinda of...overwhelmingly weak compared to what they were facing. As for it's straightforwardness...that fits with her personality. So, no issue there as I see it.

A Third Path To The Future I don't see the point of killing anyone off this near the end. We won't see the characters long term reactions to it and short term you have already killed off a character to show that wars have casulties. Fate Touched In Middle Earth. 1) If you want the Ent arc you sort of need Merry. And I think it works better with two captives instead of just one so maybe Pipin as well. Sam could be left behind to look after bag End and replaced with Harry since 9 walkers verus 9 riders is a thing. 2)That sounds fine, Though how will you integrate crossbowmen since they are not mentioned and work well with shield walls and fortifications? WIll they be a major componet or just an auxiliary force. 3)The elves live in the woods or across the see. Horse are not really their thing. Gondor has less cavalry than Rohan probably because a lot of their forces defend cities and they use more land to farms and less for grazing. 4)Not sure. I agree with you it could go either way. King of Champions. 1)There should be some training scenes. It establish their abilities for those that are not huge RWBY fans and allows for interpersonal interaction. As for Arturia dealing with grim, while it would be a cool combat scene what else does it add to the story? I wouldn't expect more than a small blurb every chapter to keep her in mind till the rest of the MCs catch up with her. 2)I don't know RWBY cannon that well. How much of a plotter is she? Or does she leave most of the plotting to her inner circle? It might make more sense to show their points of view when realvent. 3)It is fine. I Like it.

A Third Path to the Future At this point in the story, in my opinion, killing off any of the main characters or even secondary characters might be pointless and as you said unnecessary drama. It can still happen even with a teleportation array if the person is taken unawares, killed to fast and or with an overpowered attack, or if the array is powered by their bio-energy not having enough to make the distance to a safe place. But as you mentioned doing so now would only be for dramas sake and would not fit the story as it is nor does this feel like a story where their death would have an impact on the characters like Count Dooku was for Harry in the ‘Magic of the Force’. Moreover, when it comes to the main four ladies only Hela would most likely not be killed due to her connection to Lady Death. The other three could die but Emma is now almost never in position for that to happen; while Jean and Ororo are incredibly hard to do so with all of their abilities. In addition, with everything that Harry has done for Lady Death in cleaning up souls that should not have become immortal she may allow them to come back to life. Fate Touched in Middle Earth I personally would like to see Sam traveling with Frodo on the journey and even before that happens. I am ambivalent when it comes to Pippin and Merry and if they were not included in the story until they have to be is something that I would be okay with. For Sam it more has to do with the fact that the comradery between them was something that I want to see more of. Moreover, Sam had this down to earth personality that between Harry and Sam would be really useful for grounding the party and keeping things from becoming overly tense and gloomy. For your point about the Dwarven army I am in full agreement that it would like the Roman Legions of old. I think Elves have used horses for combat but it would be more of a result of being attacked while mounted. I think it was humans that really took the idea and created mounted cavalry as we know it with formations and commands. In terms of exchanging rings, I am indifferent to the idea and do not really care either way. If there is the worry of exchanging rings then maybe going the route that has been taken in ‘Horse of the Force’ or ‘A Third Path to the Future’ with Hela would better; the idea of creating an item that would be useful or meaningful. Though I do have a question of my own, will FILFy come back after A Third Path to the Future is completed?

Having just finished reading King of Champions I thought I would share my opinions on it. I don't think we need to spend a lot of time when it comes to the training and sparring as for the most part it's not going to amount to anything significant. The only time I would want to see more sparing is in situations that allow for one of the characters to grow, whether it's a way to use their semblance, manipulate aura, or be shown new ways to fight. So I don't think we need to see much of the internal training of team ANVL or RWBY but it would be interesting to see them sparing as a group. If we were to spend any time when it comes to the teams it would be Team Argent (Tia, Sun-Sung, Appaci, and Mila) as they seem as if they're going to implode and leave behind Tia and Sun-Sung. In terms of watching Arturia and the situation on the home front would only be interesting if it's expansion or actual fights. By that I mean watching as she and or those under her command work to reclaim land under Harry's suggestion to continue expanding the town and reclaim land or if we run into another situation like when the Grimm were migrating and attacked the mine. It would be boring to watch her decimate packs with alpha's as shown only an S-class Grimm would be able to pose a threat. When it comes to Salem I personally see her more like Sauron. She has been alive for so long and seen so much that I cannot see her reacting like she has in 'Semblance of Hope'. I could see her reacting to major plans that did not go her way or information she did not expect. However her council I can see reacting like Tyrannus; Cinder, Watts, Tyrion, Adam all of them I can see reacting and trying to actively look to deal with situations because they are mortal and understand what it means to be mortal. It would be interesting to get an idea as to what they are planning and if the information that they are finding is having effects on the mental fortitude of key players. At this stage of the story I would say that Tia is overpowered as no one in their year and probably the year above could effectively fight her. Even Harry with his previous knowledge cannot handle her. As it stands the only person close to her in age that I could see beating her in a fight is Arturia. I would not say that having a simplistic semblance is a bad thing but it's too strong for this stage. I personally feel that the plating covering her form should not be as prolific and maybe she doesn't have control of her emotions and instincts. It would give her something to work at, to transform and to learn to expand the plating and to rein in her new instincts.
