Oooof. Hake's spitting straight facts here. If Trout couldn't be brave for her freaking sister in law and the mother of her nephew, there's not much hope. The dialogue here pretty much confirms that the only way a monarch can "step down" is by giving themselves to the Tide. It's harsh that Hake's suggesting it, but also very valid. Obviously, Sturgeon doesn't even want to entertain letting Trout die, but she needs to be careful here. Hake might end up disowning two sisters within 24 hours if she keeps pushing.

The subtext is so good- We saw what happened to Thresher, Hake just gave us his own version of the "let him do one good thing for this island and die" quote! Also pssst, Hake, we dont need Trout to help fix this. Lets go teach all the daisys how to open crabs instead :3c commit crimes in the woods!

Kelp is displeased by the children arguing. Hake is very valid here, though. Wishing stepping down didn't involve death, since what Trout really needs is some help and less whispers in her ears.

We're in this mess because multiple cats thought Trout was unfit to lead and took action into their own paws (Petrel and Krill for opposite reasons). Must really sting for Sturgeon to hear Hake come to that conclusion on his own, especially if monarchs must serve The Tide if they step down. At this point, I'm guessing every cat who's thinking long term can see Trout is unfit to lead, but her sister still thinks she can fix this. I *want* to believe in Sturgeon's ability, but this might be way beyond what even her scheming can handle.

Arual has confirmed before that the only way for cats to 'step down' is to swim with the sharks. Hake is basically saying that the best thing that Trout could do would be to end her own life... I get the sense that Sturgeon lashing out so forcefully has less to do with her actually being angry, and more with her being *panicked* and unwilling to accept that the relationship between her siblings has deteriorated to the point where they're wishing death on each other. She's spent her whole life trying to protect them both from Thresher, but in the end she couldn't protect them from the fallout of their own choices.
