Aughhh Petrel so clearly cares about Sturgeon so much, and I think they care about the kittens too. But also, I think there's something to be said about how Petrel so far seems to have been before their time. They're gone, and Trout IS becoming a more nervous Thresher— pushing away family and surrounding herself with yes-men to enable her sporadic behavior. Sturgeon doesn't want to believe that Trout would do such a thing, but with how the last chapter left off... Seems she's having a hard wake up call. And while there's some that can blame it on Sturgeon, saying if she hadn't had that attack done then this wouldn't have happened, I disagree. Trout has always been a people pleaser as long as the people she is aiming to please are people who are closest to her. The daisies starving in the woods and taking their young to the graveyard so they can slit their throats and die in peace is an issue she theoretically knows of but pretends not to see 90% of the time. Let's not forget, her attacker was already plotting something before Sturgeon got involved and just made sure Trout wouldn't ACTUALLY die. She had no way to know it'd trigger her Thresher bloodline in full swing. Back to this page though, I think this is a super interesting interaction to see between them. Petrel has been labeled as a friend that betrayed them all when Trout was crowned, and we all sort of gasped and decided that Petrel HAD to just be getting close to the kids to attack... But here clearly shows otherwise. Petrel believed in them, and believed that Sturgeon would become the next Queen and lead the island to better pastures. Unfortunately, I think Thresher saw that too and chose Trout because he knew exactly how well he'd groomed her into his perfect little crab worshiper. Anyhowwww I love this series, I get so excited for every update!

"i'll be back to myself after some rest" Petrel waking up to discover that they are not only still not back to theirself, but has additionally been given a rehauled character design (also Patreon just opened really quickly and I misread "Petrel it's okay" as "Petrel it's gay" idk what that means, but that's awesome sturgeon ssdhsdjskl)

I thought I’d speak up and mention that the Tide picks the next ruler, not Thresher. Even in the beginning of WLB, Thresher acknowledges if it was up to him, he would have chosen Sturgeon. This is kind of a minor detail and we haven’t gone back to it much, but something interesting to note — since Trout was likely chosen by just chance alone, with the Tide being what it is and all.

The Tide is also supposed to be the one deciding who gets sent to the sea, but we saw that Thresher was the one doing it all along. Trout even attempts this behavior— succeeding one time. The Tide doesn't exist, Sturgeon explained it a while back that it never has and is something used to keep the family in line and to keep loyalty, but the Tide's words are whatever the leader at the time needs them to be. That's why she goes on to encourage Trout to *say* what the Tide said, even if she is just rephrasing her own thoughts. It makes far more sense for the story so far to be about generational trauma than to suddenly take a "actually, it was all real all along, you just had to have more faith" twist. All we've seen so far has been how the Tide has been a front to cover up the power-hungry genocides that AT LEAST Thresher has perpetuated. The deep running hatred for what are essentially homeless starving people leads me to believe that Thresher was far from the first cruel king.

OOPS sent that too early! the tide does not exist in the sense that there is no all-powerful god that speaks to the leader, it is just a scapegoat to justify the leader's rule and the decisions they make, that much is true! however, "the tide" as in the hermit crab that the family cats believe is their god DOES exist, and that's what the previous commenter is referring to. the crab is not sapient, but it does exist as something the cats interact with and treat as a figure of their religion. we know that the previous monarch does not choose which of their heirs will be the next ruler, because we see thresher die in the first chapter before a successor is chosen, and he certainly cannot rig the crowning ceremony from beyond the grave lol we have not seen how the ceremony plays out in practice in the comic at this point, all we know is that the crab chooses from the heirs presented to them (and it is presumably a public ceremony, so sturgeon could not have rigged it in her favor). perhaps the heirs just sit in a line and whoever the crab walks up to first is the next monarch, and trout got picked because she brought the crab a lot of mangoes? i guess we'll find out eventually!

I'm certain Trout was picked by the crab because she brought mangos to him
