Well divas I was gonna hold onto this until next week but we just sold out our show so I'm feeling grateful .... here's some classic ologist content .... notes on CAMP! Slightly off topic because this leans into the colloquial misuse of ‘camp’ and realistically it is actually a meme-ification (which I feel like is a lot of the ‘camp’ culture online) but the dissertation I could write on Ms Kloss’s Met Gala flop to ‘camp’ trajectory is maybe the greatest prose we’ve never read. It’s giving so ahead of the curve the curve became a sphere - but backwards? Like she was so off-brief that in retrospect the disregard for the rules and regulations was borderline avant garde. Still to this day one of the most memorable unremarkable looks ever to walk down a carpet.

I wouldve loved to hear your thoughts on camp in relation to capitalism. The obvious pointer would be extravagance but im more interested in the relationship between capitalistic gains and our perceived camp-iness. I find it hard to enjoy certain works as camp because i know the goal is money or fame i.e. jojo siwa’s new song. It taints any morsel of purity, sincerity, or defiance in creating the work because the point isnt to be enjoyable by audience or creator, its to be “something”.

YESSSSS susan sontag! when you need to calm down came out i was literally in graduate school studying camp and specifically this article. the cold hard truth is that based on ms sontag’s definition taylor CANNOT truly produce camp as she is not part of the LGBTQ community and has said as much. I often say that during that time taylor was attempting to renegotiate the terms under which camp is created, which is not her job. she had the best of intentions, but didn’t take the time to recognize impact.

Chappell is too self-aware and the work is far too good to be camp. It's the combo of artifice & badness that makes something camp imo. I think Jojo's song is camp actually

Kitsch has no high art value, camp is so bad it becomes high art in kind of an ironic way. This is where the eye of the beholder part/other taste comes in

also love the commentary on mediocrity in here! i’m not sure who said it (mamont? tolstoy? no idea) but i always think of the quote “if your entire audience leaves a show saying ‘that was a brillant’ you have created something mediocre. If the whole audience leaves saying ‘that was trash’ then you failed. but if the audience leaves in conversation with opinions split down the middle then you’ve created art”.
