Literally went to sleep thinking about this and woke up thinking about this lol. So many things on Midnights that didn't make sense to me are adding up now. I really think that album was her processing a breakup she knew was imminent. Maroon, Midnight Rain, Question, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN KID (I don't think I'm ready to fully confront that one), Labyrinth, Dear Reader...the math is mathing like never before. But then you've got songs like Sweet Nothing, The Great War, SOTB, Paris, Glitch... like, were those just love songs she wrote and liked and wanted to get out into the world while they were still relevant even though she knew the relationship was coming to an end? Glitch and Paris I especially can't make sense of. There's so much to process but I'm excited to revisit Midnights today for the first time in a while.

I don’t know why people are so shocked and insisting that “love isn’t real.” Taylor just wrote a whole song about not wanting to settle down, and Joe is a presumably straight man in his 30s who seems like he could be pretty traditional (shiny family, holiday peppermint candy?). As Zack says, wouldn’t be surprised if it was as simple as them wanting different things at this stage of their lives!

When Taylor met joe in 2016 she thought she was cancelled and over, then when lover came out she thought she was gonna be done as a pop star once she turned 30, then covid hit and she was staying home. Now she’s back to her old lifestyle of touring the world and dominating with her music. I think she thought in 2019 that she would marry joe and settle but she has now realized that her career isn’t slowing down, and now since she knows, she isn’t ready to settle. Hence changing from paper rings, wanting to marry, to lavender haze, not wanting to marry

I feel like there's a lot in Midnights of Taylor coming to recognize who she really is. Being anywhere from 30 to 35 is a ripe time for that. Before Joe, she never had a happy relationship, and there is a deeply romantic side of her that always wanted that. When she met Joe, she was in a vulnerable place and she dove in head over heels with all the love she had to give. I really believe she thought she'd never let him go. But what about the other parts of Taylor? She contended with those parts of herself on tracks like Anti-Hero, Midnight Rain, Bejeweled, Dear Reader. She lost even more of the wide eyed wonder I think she still had on Lover. I am starting to appreciate this album a whole lot more as a hazy exploration of the confusion that can arise when you're wrestling with different parts of yourself and the potential disillusionment of losing a great love ... maybe the pain of slowly growing out of it.

Maybe a stupid question but ...does it make sense for Midnights to be about the breakup? It was released Oct 21 so the music must have been finalized like at least a month before? And the writing process probably took at least a year? There's so much speculation about certain songs being about falling out of love with Joe but - if at all - that should be a subconcious thing right? You're not a year away from breaking up and write about coming home to a empty house or being on your own kid as future predictions. Unsure where we can actually see signs of impending doom (Question, definitely. Like what the hell. This is even more insane now that they broke up) and where the clowning starts
