Tim McGraw was released as Taylor's debut single seventeen years ago, when I was only twelve years old. It wasn't until I was thirteen and heard Teardrops On My Guitar for the first time I became a true fan, although I resisted it at first. I had never been interested in a country artist before and actually found it incredibly embarrassing that I was listening to a country girl, because at the time, I really considered myself to be a hard rock type of a bitch...definitely the final words before disaster lmfao. I got the debut record for my birthday that year and spent twenty minutes decoding all the secret messages with my friends at my party; I still remember decoding the Should've Said No message and how my friends clowned it, being like, why does it just say SAMSAMSAM again and again? By that time I was already into the lore, so it was only EYE who knew why it said SAMSAMSAM over and over. I was a stan then, and I'm a stan now.

Although it's worth it to note that total and true ABSOLUTE stanhood didn't set in until she was a surprise guest at the Jonas Brothers concert my best friend at the time fucking dragged me to. Something about that event catapulted me into utter mental illness over her, and Love Story being the first single from Fearless REALLY DID NOT HELP...I played that song so many times my family begged me to stop playing it. The rest is history....................

What was the first Taylor song you heard, and when did you really get into her?

I was watching the 2007 CMA awards with my mom and she came on with her sparkle guitar and performed Our Song and I thought it was the best thing I ever heard in my life. Then I saw her open for Rascal Flatts in 2008 (?) and the rest was herstory…

Madeline Marona

Heard Our Song in my moms room when she had MTV on. I kid you not lmao … didn’t truly become a fan until fearless. I ate that UP!! Did everything I could to make my hair that curly lmao

Z

The first song of Taylor’s I heard was Our Song because my dad played country radio! and i’m a pop girl but I couldn’t deny it’s a killer melody

Lisa Hurley

I heard teardrops on the radio and can remember rolling my eyes, but low key thinking it was good (I was 19 at the time and was not into country at all). It took years of convincing but after hearing ,or maybe seeing the back to December music video, I was hooked.

megan!

the first song I heard from Taylor was Teardrops on Radio Disney lol. didn’t fully buy in or become a stan until Love Story!

courtney

woke up on a Saturday morning and went into my parents' room to annoy them and my mam had like MTV or something on in the background on TV and suddenly the Love Story music video came on and I was transfixed lmao, I wanted to grow up to look like her I just thought (and still think) she was such a beautiful princess. I remember vividly choosing between buying Fearless or the Hannah Montana movie soundtrack (😭) because Crazier also gagged me. Bought Fearless and listened the whole way home reading through the lyrics and album booklet and the rest was history!

Lyndsey

Absolutely love the origin story. I got the cd as a birthday gift when going through a hard country music phase! I heard our song for the first time and 12 year old me was living the yeehaw dream

Cristina

First song Shake it off 😂 when I first heard some of the rep songs I was like...okay maybe TS is not so bad..but only got into her after I watched the Reputation documentary on Netflix and actually also that Reptide cover on BBC radio 1..

s(l)am (dunk)

Teardrops on my guitar is my origin story too 💞 i dropped off for a lil after that besides the radio singles, but then 1989 hit me and my ex best friend like a truck and it was alllllll we played in the car

Beca Stockman

Teardrops came to radio right as I was coming to the realization that my first crush didn’t like me back and it hit me like a TRUCK… became my MySpace song in true early aughts fashion. Fearless is when the insanity really set in though. I’m not sure I’ve listened to any other album ever as much as I have that one.

I was late, but early to some. Speak Now was when I finally came on board, which is why her holding the album hostage has especially driven me mad. I am Taylor’s age (technically a week younger), and at 16, her debut did NOT seem cool at all. I was into Elliott Smith, the Shins and indie rock. I could also be found at punk rock shows and grimey basement shows. I was “TOO COOL” for Taylor, especially since I also sang and played guitar; there was something especially embarrassing to me about her, how fearlessly optimistic she was and how girly her presentation was (now I think it’s all fucking iconic and admirable especially because looking back, the mid 2000’s were very sexist and male dominated). I also was turned off by some early live performances where she seemed wildly out of tune. I put Speak Now on my iPod a little after it came out, and was riveted by her use of language and astounded at her melodic prowess. I went back and caught up on Fearless (which at the time became my favorite) and Debut. I was full on obsessed and excited and following her pre-release things and release of Red! Became fanatic and never looked back

Freya Carroll

Very similarly to you Madeline I also was so reluctant to admit I liked Teardrops on My Guitar when it came out because I thought I was a rock chick, but I would say I was a relatively casual fan (knew every lyric to every song but didnt know a huge amount about Taylor’s life) until maybe the summer before 1989 came out, I did a revisit of her discography and followed loads of Taylor fan tumblrs. Like at the point Shake It Off came out it was all ready over for me but Blank Space buried me in the ground and I haven’t looked back since x

Jordyn

I also was shown tomg, and our song too, by a friend and was like ok but it’s country I don’t think that’s my vibe 😅 then getting obsessed not long after

Kyle Labe

Love Story in 2008 is the origin of my delusion! There was a special channel on Comcast OnDemand (LMFAO) that featured all of her music videos, and I would just put them on REPEAT until, similarly, my parents would kick me off the television

Erin Elise

When I was 10, my next door neighbor came over and told me I had to watch a music video called Mine. I became obsessed, and a few months later, got Speak Now cd for Christmas 🥰

Lindsey Johnston

Tim McGraw! Fan since day one. I remember seeing her as an opener to Rascal Flatts in Cleveland after I got tickets for my birthday & being more excited about her than them!

Inès Labé

No idea which song it was, I think it must have been You Belong With Me, cause I remember watching the music video on repeat, but wasn’t a die hard fan back then. I got a few cds (RED and 1989) and loved her music but didn’t know much more about her outside of the tabloids gossips. Then I loved LWYMMD, but didn’t get into Reputation after that cause I don’t remember even listening to Ready for it or other songs after that, except maybe Delicate. Then I just stopped listening, not really willingly, just stopped, then rediscovered her music through Lover, Folklore and Evermore just last year! I fell back in love with her music, and really dived into her beautiful storytelling and lyricism, as English isn’t my first langage and I probably didn’t pay much attention to lyrics when I was younger! It must be a bit more than a year that I really got into her music for real and I’m so happy about that!!!

lyrium

my friend despised the song Red and I played it in the background as a meme whenever we gamed together. at some point it stopped being ironic for me and Safe and Sound cemented my adoration.

Alli Johnson

I was 22 when Taylor released her debut album and while I'd liked a few country songs here and there it wasn't a genre I paid much attention to so I think the first song I heard of her's was when Love Story or YBWM started to get some play on pop radio. No denying they were bops but Pop music wasn't really my thing either back then. I'd always been primarily an angsty alt-rock/grunge/indie girly and no little blonde teenager was going to change that...Until 1989. That was the first Taylor album I bought and while I really liked it I still wasn't ready to dive headfirst into the fandom. My "baptism" as a Swiftie, wasn't until the Evermore/Folklore Era. Booooo, shame on me. Even if it took me way to long I'm glad that I got over thinking I was too cool for Taylor or Pop music; amazing what learning to care less about what others think once your in your 30's can do for you, am I right? Now she's been my top artist on Spotify for 3 years and and I love all her albums. Once Blondie gets her hooks into you there's really just no coming back.

Michaela Wagner

I heard our song on the radio… obsessed…Ryan Seacrest didn’t fucking tell me the name of the song!!! It wasn’t a hit in Australia so I really had know way of knowing what it was… then love story came out and I was obsessed with that and the Fearless album, went to my cousin’s house and she had debut and we popped it on and sure enough… when our song played I lost my god damn mind

Autumn

My best friend's mom bought her the Debut CD when we were 12 and sometime after that, I heard her and fell in love. I remember having Cold As You as my myspace song because it reminded me of the way my parents made me feel (so sad) I remember me and my best friend hearing Love Story for the first time so vividly. I listened to Fearless on release day, CD booklet in my hand decoding all of the messages and crying. Oh man the rest is history. Fearless has such a special place in my heart. It got me through some of the worst times. It's incredible how we each have our own similar yet unique experiences with discovering her.

Ty

I first heard teardrops on my guitar at some preteen video dance lmao. I casually heard each single and liked a handful as well but it was around red I started seeking her out intentionally

taylor

I was thinking about this on my drive to work today while listening to Love Story 😭 I saw the Tim McGraw music video right when it dropped and bought and loved her debut album, but I didn't truly become ~obsessed until I heard Love Story for the first time when I was 15. I can even remember that I was hanging out in my sister's room listening to her mp3 player because she had downloaded the song from limewire and wanted me to listen to it 😂 I heard the bridge and my life was never the same hahaha

Nitya Kadambi

I became aware of Taylor during the fearless era - I remeber I used to burn CDs of my favorite songs to play in my car on my drive to school and I remember buying love story off of iTunes and putting it on a CD. I didn’t get around to actually buying the album and getting into the lore of it all until the summer of ‘09. I remember taking my little brother to see the Hannah Montana movie and I was absolutely gagged by the song crazier. My progression to a full swiftie was slow, but by the time I started college in the fall of ‘09 I was hooked. I remember visiting a friend during fall break in NYC and I listened to debut and fearless on my blue iPod mini the whole time on the bus ride there and I remember just not being able to listen to anything else for months. I listened to Forever and always piano version so much that I learned to do the chords on the piano (I don’t play piano lol) when I was home over Christmas break.

Ty

The fact that her career is now older than she was when she started it

cheesefries

should’ve said no was the first song i heard (when i was a mere 6 years old) but i didn’t get to the obsession until fearless era

Tegan

Our Song on the radio in 2007. Immediately hooked on that lil curly haired gal🥹

Joey Caleb

My dad told me about her after he saw her perform Tim McGraw or another ballad at a country awards show. Little did he know I would log on to see the Our Song music video and become FERAL. 💘

Ksenia

I was 14 when Tim McGraw came out but I started following online every breath Taylor made as a swiftie in the Fall of 2008 after I heard Our Song on the radio and got Debut and Fearless.

Eden McFadden

First song I heard that teardrops on my guitar and our song, my friend showed me the music videos and I was instantly hooked 😊😊😊 I actually sang TOMG at a school talent show when I was in grade 4!! And white horse the year after that ! 😂😅

Leslie

Tim McGraw was the first Taylor song I heard, but it wasn't Taylor I heard singing it. My parents owned a restaurant and music venue in my hometown, and the local college had a commercial music program that specialized specifically in country music (I'm from Texas, lol). There was a girl from Australia studying songwriting there, and she played at our restaurant once a week. One night I was waitressing and heard her playing Tim McGraw. I thought it was a song she had written, so I complimented her on it. She thanked me, but said it wasn't hers, it was this new artist named Taylor Swift (this was in 2007; my senior year of high school). I said I'd never heard of her but I really liked the song. The next time the Aussie girl played, she brought me a burned copy of debut (sorry Taylor) and the rest is history. (Fun fact, Taylor's OG banjo player, Ben Clark, also attended this school. He and his sisters played at our restaurant too.) Taylor truly came out at just the right time for me, because for most of junior high and high school I was a HUUUUUGGGGEEEEEEE indie/emo snob (like, I died on the hill of Fallout Boy and MCR not being "real emo" -- that's how obnoxious I was) and I was one of those bitches who thought being a misogynist would make boys like me. If Taylor had hit the scene at that time in my life I would have said the most vile shit about her, I just know it. Thankfully I did a lot of growing up between junior and senior year and had developed a newfound love for country (which had always been a guilty pleasure tbh) and pop music. So I fell in love with her instantly. While I was a fan of debut, I think Fearless is when my stanhood started to take shape, and Speak Now is what planted me firmly up Taylor's ass for the rest of time.

I knew of Taylor ever since I was a kid. Were you even ALIVE in 2008 if you didn’t hear Love Story on the radio? Although my first encounter with the blondie was probably TOMG. THE KIDZ BOP VERSION! 🥲 But I became a Swiftie in 2021 because I was an Olivia Rodrigo fans since her days on Disney. People were comparing Sour to Taylor and they were specifically talking Folklore/Evermore. I listened and I was hooked. I went back into the rest of her music and the rest is history.

I heard “Teardrops” as an undergrad in High School, and it was the subject of an explosive argument between myself and the country-star-wannabe hottie senior, who was, and I cannot make this shit up, cast as Tony to my Maria in our high school production of West Side fucking story. I’m not creative enough to make this up. I knew the song backwards and forwards, it was the reason for my own damn private teardrops regularly, but I simultaneously found it overwrought/corny, and I REALLY enjoy making fun of things I love. “Tony” overheard me mocking the song to a fellow hateful cast member. He immediately crossed the stage, accosting me. “You’ve NEVER felt something so real as crying teardrops on your guitar!! You’ll never experience anything so pure and real, how dare you even talk about that song?!” Keep in mind, this delusional muppet was making frequent pilgrimages to Nashville for recording sessions, and the entire stupid town believed he’d soon move to the big city and we’d hear his uninspired flat twang all over the radio. (It’s been 15 years. They’re still waiting.) I was shocked he was so wounded, I think I accused him of having a crush on her. (I admit it was I, FEROCIOUSLY crushing on HIM, but he looked divine ok and I was a virgin rehearsing love scenes with him every night from 6-10/11pm, plus Sondheim & Bernstein were hypnotizing me into lustful psychosis. You try it.) I don’t remember what all was said, but let’s just say during the private fallout in my bedroom, there were fountains of fucking teardrops. And with every subsequent listening, Drew was replaced with “Tony” in my mind, ensuring I’d never listen without crying, again. Well, not until several years and several dumb, hot co-stars later. Sorry for the dissertation, I’ve been waiting to trauma-dump that fiasco for ages plus God personally told me that now was the time, I was spiritually obligated. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyone else notice Tay’s candids she’s been wearing all black ensemble twice already, but the black is mix with 1989 era style. 🤔🤔 Interesting .

Christian

My first memory of Taylor was when I heard WANEGBT on the radio when I was 7 (although I already knew who she was at that point, so I assume I had previously heard some of her other songs). I became a proper fan when I was 10 and she released the music video for Wildest Dreams. I was completely shook by the level of cinema. 1989 was the first album I ever listened to and the rest is history.

KiwiKat

I’m still a baby Swiftie tbh but first song I heard was Love Story. I feel like if she had been around some years earlier in my Shania Twain, Leanne Rimes, Dixie Chicks era, I’d have been OBSESSED. But by the time she arrived I was super emo and “not like other girls.” 🙄😅 Even so, who could resist Love Story? Or literally any radio single? That I refused to stan even when I listened to Red and 1989 front to back and really loved them feels more like mental illness than being obsessed. Especially now that I’ve listened to her earlier albums. The correct response clearly was to stan. I have since rectified my past mistakes lol

Olivia Claire

Here in Australia, I honestly don't remember if any of Taylor’s debut songs were played here or if it did, I was too young/oblivious to notice. Love Story would’ve been the first one I remember hearing and I began watching her music videos and slowly was won over. I really remember the movie Valentine's Day being a reason I became a full stan (which is so random in hindsight)

Chelsea Nagy

Tim McGraw was the first song I heard of hers. I went to a high school with A LOT of country loving people and I RESISTED full stop. It wasn't until I was required to go to the FFA (Future Farmers of America) National convention in 2008 in Indianapolis that I became a true fan. Seeing her perform live was totally a game changer. I'll never forget it, because the convention was right before Fearless came out and she played Love Story. Thousands high schoolers lost their minds that night and I was proudly one of them! lol

Mac Schwandt

Michigan country boy here - first heard Tom McGraw in my car on the way to work (I was 16) and was fucking hooked. I too liked Tim McGraw and thought the song was clever af. I will say I did not like tear drops on my guitar. Stopped listening to her when that came out - then she release picture to burn and I was obsessed. Give me revenge Taylor any day of the week. Probably didn’t reach Stan Stan until you belong with me. You belong with me is my fucking jam and it always will be. I think I was too old to be a true tumbler Stan, but I was reading every article about what HBIC was up to since then.

Alba

I got into her when I heard Love Story on the radio when I was 14 in 2008... Something changed in me that day. I got Fearless (international version) that XMas and I illegally acquired the Debut because I am not sure it was available in Spain back then... Together with I'd Lie and some other unreleased jewels that my illiterate ass thought were included in Debut 😂 I remember going through the lyrics of her songs with a dictionary trying to translate them to Spanish to fully understand the sacred texts. Until last year I was an unplugged swiftie and then I discovered EOAS and never looked back!

Wynne

I was living in South Africa at the time, and it was before Red so zilch people knew her. I was on WeHeartIt (lol) and found these quotes that grabbed me AND WITH YOU ID DANCE IN A STORM WITH MY BEST DRESS FEARLESS and I also found a heart with the whole chorus of Love Story in it. The Love Story Mania started spreading fast among us 11yr girls but I was already ahead of the curve. When Speak Now dropped, I quickly became obsessed with almost every song and played nothing but Sparks Fly during my twelfth birthday. Speak Now made me love HER and motivated me to go back and listen to Debut religiously when I was going through an unrequited love experience myself.
