I finished listening to the episode. Entertaining & illuminating as ever. Thank you for the discussion about the Atlantic article - I had a hard time putting into words my thoughts but you did it so well. Of course, Dear John and BTR are never gonna sound as painful or scathing as they did 13 or 14 years ago lmao. These emotions are long gone (at least those that propelled BTR). Whatever those reviewers might think, she’s a singer and not an actress (that’s Camilla Belle’s prerogative 😂) - she cannot rummage & dredge up some old emotions on demand. I also agree with the lack of 1) thesis about what Shirley Li wanted from the album & 2) understanding about what Li thinks TVs are about.

I think it’s clear the re-recorded versions are much more easily enjoyed by those of us (which includes me) who don’t have the OG cemented in our brains as a core memory because I don’t really hear anything weird or even all that different but I also don’t care what others listen to and do not understand thus weird obsession with white knighting all over the internet for the TVs. Like have you seen the numbers? Girl is doing just fine.

I actually have a light ring but the issue is sometimes I use my webcam (like for besties episodes) and sometimes I do the whole camera setup, which looks great but is a pain in the ass for me to put together so I only do it for special episodes!
