This song is more than likely referencing John Mayer, and since she probably didn't want to make a sexy video depicting fantasies about someone she used to have feelings for since he is so cringeworthy now, she wanted to put the music to a completely different story. I thought it was amazing, and I loved that she wrote the treatment and directed it. I love all the music videos she writes and directs, so I have never understood your hatred towards them.

I think she would do well with codirecting or having an involved editor. With her videos she has cool ideas and knows what images or metaphors would be powerful and resonate with the fans, but the rest is just slow paced and not superfluous meaningful. For this video I could’ve loved a Taylor rescuing herself and/or fighting with her past self to get to the Taylor’s version in the vault, some sneaky mastermind fighting sexily to get closer to the song meaning.

I think of the videos she herself has directed, this is my favorite next to the Lover video. It’s a low bar though… The pacing of her videos really seems to suffer - she lingers on certain things for too long (in this one, for example, didn’t they add a few guitar bars after the first chorus so Joey King could crawl through more lasers? Not necessary imo). I just don’t expect her videos to be good at this point…I wish she’d work with someone else. At least we didn’t get dialogue in this one!

I'm glad I listened to the song first so I could fully appreciate it. Had I seen the MV first without hearing the song in its own...idk. The disconnect between the song and content of the video made it feel like I'm watching a short skit while random background music plays. The song just kind of sits in the background, chugging along. Idk, feels very disconnected and doesn't do the song justice, as though they were just forcefully paired together. The song is a banger and I wish it had a video that did it justice.

I think she choose this song because it's the banger of the vault songs and it definitely wouldn't have gone with Enchanted. Also there's the line "secret mission" lol

And yet another music video opportunity suffers from incessant Easter eggs and shoe horned relevance to re recording sentimentality.(I cried when she stopped to look back ) I hope she finds her hand as a director eventually but she will not with everyone eating up everything she tries. She needs criticism to thrive guys we know this.

Taylor said she thought of this idea for the music video a long time ago. I think she wanted to do this but didn’t have a specific song to set it to. So she just picked whatever song she wanted to promote as the single and ran with it. I think it’s a great idea as a 5 minute short film but as a music video for I Can See You? No

this music video would’ve bee more exciting if it came out before the album dropped. Like imagine if this video was how she revealed the cover of speak now tv. I think she could’ve picked a more heartfelt song to put the concept of a museum of her past in. Castles crumbling would’ve made more sense for this concept. Since that song is literally about feeling like you’re losing everything you built for yourself.

I had the same reaction as Zach watching the mv when it came out. I have a degree in producing/directing, so I have been really disappointed by Taylor's shift to writing/directing. She is the queen of evocative songwriting, so you'd think it would be a no-brainer translation to mv concepts and direction. But she intellectualizes it too much, focusing more on easter eggs and gimmicks as opposed to just putting to screen what she herself imagined when writing these songs. If she actually recreated in her mvs the imagery that inspired her songs, we'd all die. DIE. Because it would be mind-blowing. But alas, we have music videos that I honestly do not feel the need to rewatch ... like ... ever.

As soon as I accepted that the music videos are film school for Taylor and she’s trying out different genres and camera techniques to learn then I’m pretty happy with them. Frankly it’s the vault track with the best single potential and has the most heist sounding music for this mini spy video so that’s why it was used. Zach is a purist though so I get why he’s annoyed that the songs are vehicles for filmmaking instead of being served properly as a music video.

This video basically gave me the same reaction. I just don’t see the point in doing it to THIS song. It also feels like the total commercialization of her discography at this point. Like we are walking through a museum with a bunch of nostalgia filled artifacts and it almost looses meaning in the process. I understand it’s a re-record, but can’t we get something a little bit, idk, deeper and more artistic than this? It feels like it’s made for children.

I agree that it's dumb and stupid and doesn't fit the song - that's why I love it. It's fun! Could she have done a better job? 100%. But I'll take this over ATW10 where every single lyric is simply acted out any day

I honestly loved the video, I thought the message was touching and the fact that these people from her past were the ones helping her reclaim her music made my heart 🥺 I get that you're like a film person and analyze stuff but for me a video being enjoyable is all I want same with movies if it's well constructed with good plot and acting I will.enjoy it
