My fav deep dive yet! What you said about her being appealing to children is so spot on. I was a huge Katy Kat from about ages 6-11 (2008-2013) and a lot of that was due to the weird, fantastical, larger-than-life element especially of her Teenage Dream era. I also loved Taylor’s cornier songs, but interestingly enough I remember watching a Taylor doc ‘America’s Sweetheart’ or something, and got really turned off by the way the talking heads discussed Taylor in respect to the other female artists of the late 2000s. There was an implicit ‘Taylor is America’s Sweetheart because she doesn’t rely on her sexuality to move music’ vibe. I’m really glad Taylor was able to break free of her good girl shackles, and now looking back as a huge Taylor stan, I feel really conflicted about how she was used to push and substantiate this agenda.

Artpop is definitely a flop. Her fans make a lot of noise about it, but it’s only sold 5 million units worldwide in 10 years.

Gaga can't do stadiums either. That's why she didn't put out an album for 5 years after Joanne, and Chromatica was for the gays, it was not a "mainstream" pop album. Gaga knows Joanne was her last stab at being a pop girl, she knows she can't do stadiums, and so she pivoted to acting. Yes Prism didn't have the hits of Teenage Dream, but Prism was a blockbuster pop record and the Prism tour was HUGE, so huge she was the highest-paid woman in music in 2015 and was on the cover of Forbes. One of Katy's problems is she didn't have any status-maintaining thing like acting to transition to. It's also unfair to say Katy isn't an artist; her Halftime Show and her Vegas residency proved that whatever you think of her, she does have a perspective, a signature approach to songwriting and pop songs and visuals and staging etc.. Katy and Orlando aren't married (they won't last). Remember when Orlando Bloom cheated on Katy with Selena Gomez?

dear, you could at least have done some research. Gaga can obviously do stadiums and she did, starting in 2012. And a reminder that in 2022 she had the highest attended concert by a female artist this decade. xx Acting is not something she got into because music wasn't in the cards anymore, she has been acting since a teenager. And it's true, she is not a pop girl anymore, because she has become a modern icon. xx
