hello all. i spent yesterday doing a bunch of studies from life, including this little painting. i'll have more studies to post soon because i'm going to a new life drawing class on sunday for the first time!

the painting is in oil, and the only medium i used to thin paint was white spirit. the lighting sucked, but oh well. he was playing BG3 on my PC so at least he wasn't bored! mostly i just wanted to try using spirit as a medium now that i have a house where my windows can open.

here's a progress gif of my study. i'll sum up the process; i started with a wash of diluted orange/yellow paint, and let that dry. (and drip everywhere, apparently.) it was just a piece of A4 bristol board that i gesso'd. then i did a really thinned out block-in of the shadows/darks with gold-green. i refined that, and refined the silhouette as i painted in the background. then, i finished the rest of the owl. kidding. after that, i started by painting in the lights with thicker paint, then painted in the darks, finding the details as i went.

afterwards i put it in photoshop, digitally painted over a few things, liquified it a bit, and then centered the head by extending the image. (i painted too large to begin with and i couldn't be bothered to start again.)

i really want to improve my process, being able to plan more carefully and mix skin tones better. this painting took about 2-3 hours in total.

i love taking pictures of palettes.

Wow I didn't know green and gold could mix so well. You're awesome. Also Idk if texture is the right word but I love how you did the beard. Looks so soft and real.

Yesss, it's just one paint! "Gold-green", and it's my favourite oil paint colour to use because it's that lovely olive green colour. ❣️ thank you so much.

Thanks for talking through your tech! I work mostly with acrylic and ink, mostly due to ease of cleanup, but love how buttery and delightful oil is. I just have no idea how to paint with it so reading your process is helpful!!

no problem!! i'd like to make longer posts or videos when i get around to painting something that isn't in my comfort zone/super simple hahah. yesss, oil is sooo lovely to look at isn't it? i think with oil, if you accept a certain level of messiness it stops being such a hurdle, and you do get used to having to clean brushes with solvents. the fact that everything takes long to dry means you have a way wider window for cleaning brushes than you do with acrylic! i hope you do, it's my favourite paint by far. there's loads of info on the web but feel free to ask questions. :)

Ok I got my oils out of storage and salvaged a few! Gonna take a crack at this. I didn’t think to just gesso some Bristol as a board to paint on honestly ahahah. The last time I painted with oil I did so on a large marble tile that I’d found. It was super delightful the way the oil found it’s way into the minor fissures in the stone and would pull the colors around in the direction of the fissure. It was delightful!

Yes ahaha it saves a lot of time right? It's not the best but if you're just practicing it doesn't matter, plus I feel less "precious" about it. Oh yess it sounds awesome! I love a smooth surface to paint on tbh, I find canvas surfaces kinda annoying, the texture is just a bit too overpowering
