Here is my full reaction to RoboCop from 1987!

I went into RoboCop expecting a fun ‘80s sci-fi action movie, but I was surprised by just how violent it was. Some of the scenes are shockingly brutal, and the body-horror elements were honestly a bit hard to stomach. What really surprised me was how much sharp satire it sneaks in, which gave the film more depth than I expected.

The world felt so well built that by the end I thought there should be a sequel. Then I looked it up, and sure enough, this is actually a whole franchise.

Oh, and it turns out my dad is friends with Peter Weller! They used to be members of the same cigar club and have known each other for years!

Robocop is an excellent movie to watch

Dan

Fun fact: the director initially turned the job down after reading the script. Possibly more than once. It was his wife who appreciated the social commentary and satire, and encouraged him to give the script another look and to imagine where his skills could shine a light on all the subtext. As the old joke goes: RoboCop is about a man who died on the job and they still made him go in to work the next day.

Mike Smith

That’s so cool your dad is friends with Peter Weller! I was first introduced to his work on the show 24. He plays a great villain.

I was worried that this movie would be too much for you, it's infamous for being one of the more violent movies of that time. You seem to be okay, thankfully there's enough satire and interesting drama in there to take the sting off. Peter Weller shows up in some really interesting projects, he's one of my favorite "niche" actors. You need to watch Buckaroo Banzai soon to get the full exposure to 1980s weirdness and irreverence and see Weller in his most famous role.

The scenes were the machine malfunctions and machine guns the board member? The original cut had the entire board of directors being gunned down. Did that ever get restored in a director cut?

I thought this movie was really interesting when I first saw it, I was probably a bit young at 12 years old when I first saw it and I didn't really get a lot of the intricacies of the movie at that time but watching it again when I was much older I am now able to really understand much more of what this movie really has to offer and I didn't realize that this and Starship Troopers was both directed by the same person and he did an amazing job on both I thought, also I think the screenplay for both was done by the same person also, I think you should watch all the Robocop movies to get the full Robocop experience. In my opinion, Robocop was really good, Robocop 2 was OK, and Robocop 3 is a movie that exists, The remake in 2014 was pretty good but I still think the first one was and will probably always be the best one. I would love to see you watch them all and hear what you have to say about them all.

Hey Jax, since you've started exploring the world of robots, please consider watching the movie CHAPIE. It's an amazing story and I know you'll love it. Have a great weekend!

I saw this movie at 5 years old Don’t ask me why so young haha. But I enjoy this movie everytime and loved your reaction

What a small world! Your dad was smoking cigars with Robocop this whole time!

Robert Inman

Thanks Jax! Paul Verhoeven also directed a few more of these "camp" 80s scifi films like Total Recall and Starship Troopers with a similar vibe. Mostly practical effects like models and stop motion animation.

Tim Heron

I believe Paul Verhoeven wanted Murphy's death to be as violent as it is because he wanted it to be memorable to audiences. I could swear I've read or heard the reason why he wanted it that memorable, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it is. As recognizable as he was to Generation X in this film, Kurtwood Smith became recognizable to Millennials as Red Foreman on "That '70s Show." And his wife makes a cameo as Dick Jones' secretary, the woman at OCP whom Boddicker flirts with.

Phillip Arthur

It's so cool your father knows Peter Weller, This movie was such a turn of events!!! I absolutely loved Mrs. Jax reaction!!! I was introduced to this film, a favorite of my parents. Thank you for watching this Jax

Jasbro

Definitely the best part of this reaction is Jax's big smile when Robo started banging on the door to the drug den, honestly it would make a perfect new profile pic. Definitely watch the 2nd movie it was just as good as the first imo, but dont bother with the rest, they replaced Peter and the overall quality dropped since they had a lower budget. Definitely skip the remake as well, they changed so much that it was only Robocop in name only.

Ed Scoglio

That is so cool that your dad is friends with Peter Weller!!! Actually given what you've said about your family, I'm amazed your dad didn't make you watch this so you could see his friend! Robocop 2 is fine, 3 and the remake are bland IMO. Peter Weller didn't return for part 3 and I think the movie suffers for it. He really gave the role a lot of heart.

OctoSyn

As other people have said, the second movie is very good as well, but the third really lost the charm and felt like a generic money grab on the IP. Definitely avoid the remake though. With the themes of making fun of America glorifying violence in media, and corporate greed taking over and corrupting everything, the remake could have been AMAZING as all of those predictions from the original have shown true. However, they pretty much entirely stripped out all of the tongue-in-cheek parody from the original for the remake, because they can't make fun of the corporations that pay for these movies to be made anymore. If they tried to criticize their billionaire overlords, the script never would have made it past the first draft. It was a very disappointing movie for everyone hoping for the magic of the original.

Armando Castillo

I absolutely loooove this film. It's probably beyond messed up watching it as a kid lol I got to meet dr peter weller. He was really cool, a professor in the arts. Showed him my drawings he said I was a really good draftsman 😲 Nancy Allen who played Lewis was really kind too. I'd recommend the dark knight returns animated movie an older bruce wayne comes out of retirement to become batman again. Set in alternate Regan 80s America. Batman voiced by dr petter Weller himself! The other robo movies aren't as good as this one. Part 3 unfortunately doesn't even have Dr Weller and is pg13 ugh. Part 2 is okay it definitely has the violence lol the remake has some merit it's not as well made as the original but I like that they changed it up to make it their own.

Following along with my Criterion laserdisc release.

The secretary, on whose nameplate Boddicker stuck his gum, is Kurtwood Smith's real-life wife. The store robber picks up an Iron Man comic book before he tries to rob the store, a bit of foreshadowing. The version you watched is the X-rated version, as it contains the extra bloody and violent scenes Verhoeven had to remove in order to get an R rating. The wonderful and late (Rest in Peace) Miguel Ferrer played Bob Morton. He is the son of Rosemary Clooney, and cousin to George Clooney. Emile recognized Robocop because he said "Dead or alive, you're coming with me." You should watch Robocop 2, though it is not as good as this one. Don't bother with Robocop 3. And the remake in 2014 is pure bollocks and should be avoided like the plague.
