I don't like Winter and I don't trust her!

Its great seeing your different reactions to characters than usual.

Suplee215

I thibk Winter's slap is meant to be playful like Weiss's was. It certainly seems more forcefull but I put it to aura and winter being cold. The fact yhat Weiss expected her fanily to care more about her ranking and winter cared about her as a person a bit more does say something

Migli

Give Winter a chance shes harsh on Weiss but she is in no way their fathers "favourite" if anything its the opposite, there's a reason Weiss is the heiress to the SDC (schnee dust company) despite Winter being the eldest child, both Winter and Weiss dont like their father they just have different ways of dealing with their situation think "fight or flight" Weiss is fight she chose to defy her father and fight against his wishes leaving atlas for beacon even if she had to literally fight for it ( the white trailer was a trial set by her father for her to go to Beacon ) Winter on the other hand is flight, she chose to run and join the atlas military away from her father's authority

Adrian ruiz martinez

Winter and qrow know each other through ironwood, winter didmt when with him to school, cos winter is mid to late 20s, while qrow is in his 40s

Meghan Ross

I absolutely loved episode three of season three! And it’s where we got a chance to meet Qrow. You’re definitely gonna wanna embrace yourself for next week because that’s when all the lore finally drops!

Axx31

Don’t really understand how some people can dislike Winter. Obviously she can seem a bit cold (lol) but she’s a military woman in a different kingdom and obviously has to keep appearances. Also, personally when first watching the show, the fact that Weiss is so obviously excited to see her sister speaks to the fact that they actually have a relationship unlike say Weiss and her father.

Liam Gradwell

Yeah, Winter’s deal is….. Complicated. Mosco said all she needs to do is get laid and I think that’s definitely it. 🤣 Also yes! We all love Qrow. He’s THE uncle. 🥹💜

Charlee's World

So true it takes a little for her to open up

Octavia

Winter and weiss were raised by one of the worst men in remnant. It led to winter being a bit...cold. But I feel the moments of softness she shows are her doing her best to support and love weiss.

Migli

STRQ (stark) is such a cool team name, there's S for Summer Rose (Ruby's mom) T for Taiyang Xiao Long (Ruby and Yangs dad) then R must be Yangs mom as Yang told Blake during vol 2 that her dad said her mom was on a team with him, Summer and Qrow, and finally Q for Qrow Branwen (Ruby and Yangs uncle) id love to see an episode or like a side series or something about team STRQ one day. also just to avoid confusion Tai isnt the one whos related to Qrow. There's actually a long running joke among the fans and crew about Tai getting "freaky" with his whole team at some point since he already got with 2 outta 3 people on his team, and yes we mean WHOLE team Qrow u ain't safe from this man he'll get u pregnant too (this may not be canon but its still funny)

Suplee215

Some quick Winter lore. Winter left the family to become part of Atlas's military. Thats why Weiss is the heir and not her older sibling. As shown in world of beacon, the atlas military os linked to their academy. This is in contrast to hunters supposed to be indepdent agents. I think this is where the major rift between qrow and winter comes from. Basically qrow is the best of the best of vale hunters who do things on their own and work indepdently. Whereas Winter is best kf the best of the military operative version of Atlas. Just philosphically they jave different values.

Adrian ruiz martinez

Morgan: "who is the blonde?" Me: should I comment or wait to see if they get it. Morgan: "OH I am an idiot..." Me: oh they got it!!! Morgan: "that's qrow's brother" Me: no they didn't, tai was yang's dad, and raven brawen is qrow sister (they are twins)

Suplee215

To quickly sum up winter vs qrow, its lawful good (maybe) vs chaotic good

Suplee215

Dont think theres any reason to know whose brother qrow is from team strq at this point. I thought he was just an honary uncle at this point.

Legiblestew

Great reaction! In regards to the fight where Emerald and Mercury take out Team Coco. They actually are fighting fair. Neo isn't the only one on their team with a tricky semblance. You'll find out more soon. You're absolutely right about Winter being Weiss if she never met team RWBY. I'm sure she had a team at Atlas Academy... but considering she never mentions them I'd say its safe to assume they weren't as close as Weiss is with her team. Can't wait until you get to these next episodes!

BGTitan

Ep 3: Winter! Voiced by one of my favorite VAs, Elizabeth Maxwell. She's my queen! Also, CRWBY has stated that she’s about five years older than Weiss so about 22/23. Aside from that, I love that while Winter seems cold at first, she also does check with her sister’s well-being, clarifying that she wanted to know how she was doing personally not academically. I also took the slaps and stuff as a bad form of comedy. It isn't meant to be taken so seriously which is why they did the whole cartoon bump on the head thing. Winter was using baby Nevermores to attack. Part of the summoning thing we learn about in episode 4. Ep 4: I love seeing Winter in a more relaxed conversation with her sister. There’s clearly a lot of love there. They’re all just so awkward about it. “They do and they’re called silver!” Never change, Ruby. Part of the reason Coco and Yatsu had so much going against Em and Merc, other than just the difference in skill level and stuff, was because they chose two tanks to go against two very agile and nimble fighters. If it had been one of them with either Fox or Velvet, we might have stood somewhat of a better chance even if Em and Merc still ended up winning. To be fair Morgan, you don't trust anyone.

BrightHeart

just so you know Winter = 23 years old Qrow = around 38 years old.

Vex Valor

Winter is a complicated person as all the Schnees are, but keep in mind that Weiss is the heir to the Schnee company not Winter despite being older which is probably why you were thinking Winter was Weiss's younger sister. Winter isn't the daughter their father wanted either and now it is Weiss he is trying to mold, but she went to a school he didn't want her to attend and is not answering his calls, so he cut her up to manipulate her again.

CrowOfAFeather

LMAO yes yes yes you are crazy for thinking that about Winter xD "Are you two not concerned that the girl is not around?" They don't exactly have the luxury to look for her with Mercury fighting them lol I've never seen one be so hateful and distrusting of Winter hahahaha Sorry, but I have to say that there is one in the Schnee family who would indeed manipulate, but it sure ain't Winter! "Undercover spy for their father" lmao!

Kriscerosaurus

Traumatic backstory? In MY RWBY?! Horse feathers!

Rain

Haven't even watched this yet, but you have trust issues my friend XD

Hi-Viz

Nah that was a fight

Hi-Viz

38 Years old *at least I'd say

Rachel Mae

The schneesters are not known for good first impressions

Rachel Mae

I can tell you're trying to be vague but that's still pretty spoilerly to say something will be reveal in a future volume

Dillon Hansel

I know a bunch of other people are throwing their perspectives in, but I'm gonna try and lay things out based solely on what has been presented thus far. Winter is absolutely on the rough and cold side of things. A bit excessive in the physicality and sharpness of words when dealing with Weiss. But we also see that drop in chapter/episode 4. Nothing that happened feels like it was intended to be viewed as anything other than genuine. Winter is, quite obviously, a woman devoted to the military of Atlas and that is the lens through which she deals with 90% of everything. Like in the military, she is harsher than necessary on Weiss and that isn't something I want to excuse. But her every interaction with Weiss seems to be rooted in a deep care for her, with no ulterior intentions. Weiss never once disparaged Winter, even when she was talking about the dubious actions of her father in Volume 2. She loves Winter and understands that Winter loves her back in her own way. Only they know what they dealt with growing up, so if Weiss still cherishes Winter, even with her being excessively strict, I'll trust Weiss's judgement. I wouldn't pass final judgement on Winter until more light is shed on the circumstances surrounding the Schnee family.

Flufux

Winter is actually by far the least abusive family member Weiss has...and I can confirm that she's most certainly not working for their father.

Joe

To me, Winter means well, but she doesn't know how to turn off being a soldier around family, and while she does love Weiss, she approaches her with the same attitude she would have toward a subordinate. Winter is the only character I actively do not like. O and Winters in her early 20s wile Qrow is more likly mid 30s.

Faroth

some alcoholic vagabund is fighting my sister! -who could do suchTHATS MY UNCLE QROW!!!!! BEAT HER BUTT UNCLE QROW!!!!!

Faroth

hey, ice queen! -both look at that direction that says a lot about those two, cant say more due to spoilers

Jyoster

Ah, the Schnees always having bad first impressions. Given their reputation, it's not surprising. But given Weiss is getting better, then we can only hope Winter does too. Tough Love isn't ideal, especially for someone who went through a lot. Though given Winter's military background, it's probably a habit of discipline which she's applying there, even if she means well. And yeah, Qrow is great. Also, Winter's comment about Weiss being a receptionist is a little in-joke for CRWBY. See, prior to her current role, Weiss' voice actress was formerly a receptionist for Rooster Teeth. Then when Monty was going around looking for voice actors for the show, he approached her and asked if she wanted to partake, despite having no experience voice acting.

Marceline_mother

Just so you remember, Neo can't speak, so...

SaviorOfNirn

You gotta try and be a little more trusting. This isn't Game of Thrones, not everyone is a backstabber!

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Seems to me that Qrow and Winter may have been a thing in the past or just a fling possibly

SaviorOfNirn

I think you're misunderstanding what war is being talked about... Ironwood is defending people from the Grimm, not other nations.

RetroBeastto

I love that both you, Mosco, and Elijha all like Qrow Also don’t be to harsh on Winter. The Schnee family is extremely complicated and you’ll learn more in time

Kyle Hennett

The fight between Qrow and winter is just aggressive flirting even though Qrow is about a decade or so older the her. Qrow, Summer, Ty, and Raven were on the same team and formed team STRQ or Stark. Winter is in the generation of huntress after Qrow, so she is younger. Also she is not her father’s perfect child she is quite the opposite. She left her family to join the military and work under Ironwood which is way she is so cold and appears heartless but she really isn’t, all will be revealed when you met her and Weiss’ father.

Hi-Viz

If Qrow and Winter had a thing in the past it means mid 30's (at the LEAST) Qrow was having a thing with a fresh out of the academy Winter which is pretty gross imo

Lonely Pancake

I’m always seeing/hearing people call the qrow and winter fight flirting but don’t believe them, that ship weirds me out

39

Unfortunately, my exact taste in fictional women are cold, cool military types with issues expressing themselves 😭 I love Winter. She means well! Remember she has the same parents as Weiss… they are BOTH victims. The Schnee Dust company is corrupt and their father sucks, so Winter joined the military. Both her and Weiss are disobeying his wishes and carving out their own path in life. And the fact that Weiss is the heiress of the company implies that Winter either lost her right to the company or willingly gave it up, so she’s definitely not in cahoots with their father right now lol. Just wanted to clarify a few things ^

Lonely Pancake

Nobody that I’ve seen has reacted that appropriately to winter hitting weiss. I also hate her in this episode

SaviorOfNirn

let other people have fun with ships, both Qrow and Winter are adults.

Lonely Pancake

I just don't see how fighting like that could be seen as flirting but also I just ship him so much with someone we meet later on

Raiku Yuri

Yeah, Winter would have been Heiress if she hadn't left home. It was passed down to Weiss after Winter joined the military.

AJ22 AKA AJ Universe

1) That wasn't a crow following Qrow around, it was a raven. 2) Qrow didn't say anything about the Schnee company, he's talking about the military, which doesn't have any connection to the Atlas military except that both are in Atlas the military buys dust from the Schnees. 3) That wasn't Winter on Qrow's team. She's a full generation younger than him.

SaviorOfNirn

and some people do. its fine.

SK- Eferthigra

hey so winter is actually the best family wies has her father her brother and her mother are all worse in there own way

Phoenix_mercury

No details as idk how far into the show you are but, not quite(can elaborate in carefully phrased manner depending how far you are) but she's great

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah she really doesn't give the best first impression, hindsight tho it makes perfect sense iykyk...

Phoenix_mercury

Qrow is nearing his 40s, winter is just into her 20s... She's younger than me iirc

Phoenix_mercury

Qrow is nearing his 40s, winter is barely in her 20s...

Phoenix_mercury

If that was the case it'd be a nearly 40 y/o flirting with someone barely into their 20s, Ew... As someone mid 20s

Phoenix_mercury

3:44 probably because Weiss is the heiress, not winter, telling the audience that winter either gave up or lost the title causing it to transfer down to Weiss, also note how Weiss was actively excited to see winter yet she entirely refused to answer her father's call to the point he caused her card to decline to try get her to speak to him 6:48 and Weiss just smacked ruby 44:56 she was just sad to say goodbye to her sister yet entirely refuses to answer their father(she literally has him as father, not even dad, in her scroll) when he calls, and after the sisters conversation... Our ice Princess ain't the only one with daddy uses clearly

Mare

Both Mosco and Morgan should form a support group when it comes to distrusting.

CrowOfAFeather

That was a fight. Neither showed signs of flirting and we're talking about a man who is old enough to be a dad (being in the same team as an actual father of two) and someone in their early to mid-twenties at best. Don't be gross.

Morgan Terry

In my defense I didn’t know how old either of them were. I also don’t ship them. I just thought maybe that was why they had such beef with each other

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Yeah, he is probably 12 to 15 years older than her, but it still seems that way to me during that fight.

Jittercritter

I actually love Winter and find her fascinating and eve I don’t know why people are getting on you for being ‘harsh’ on Winter. Y’all their relationship isn’t SUPPOSED to be healthy. Abusive doesn’t necessarily mean pure evil, psychology is straight up not that simple, there’s a reason Blake tells Weiss that exact statement in season 1. A lot of things in RWBY have a double meaning and that conversation was absolutely one of them, they weren’t just talking about the White Fang, they were talking about the Schnee family too. You can like Winter and acknowledge that her behavior towards Weiss is concerning at the same time. The families in this show are extremely complicated because the *people* in this show are all emotionally stunted train wrecks, *that’s why it’s so good*

Jonathan Smith

I seem to remember you saying that either Mosco or Elijah gave you the ship names. In case it's not on there, theirs is Snowbird.

Migli

they dont even know who Raven is yet dude

Migli

I understand why on a first watch you might get that vibe especially with the wink from qrow he is a serial flirt after all as we can tell from the story he tells Ruby and yang i dont think its a crazy assumption to have with the little context were given

Migli

I suppose i never felt like it was bad or supposed to harbor that kind of reaction as in the show its clearly played off as a joke by Ruby followed by the "ha boob" comment she makes, i doubt the writers wrote it as a act of abuse and more like how in alot of anime friends will smack each other over the head when calling them an idiot thats the kind of vibe I got from that interaction just without the casual language as she is a high ranking military woman who has to keep up appearances

Lonely Pancake

We've seen playful hits in this show and that was not one of them. I know they tried to play it off like a joke with the ruby thing but it still doesn't sit right with me

Migli

I wouldnt say theyre crazy to feel weary of her even if that wasn't the shows intention they just have trust issues from media which is understandable in a show like rwby

Migli

no trauma here everything is sunshine and rainbows 😁

Migli

stop name dropping Raven thats just a spoiler 😭😭😭

Kyle Hennett

Not really…. You just made it one by seeming that there is something more about the name…

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

My favorite part about the Winter/Qrow fight is that each of them has their own leitmotif, and the music during the fight is a back-and-forth between the two. (They did something similar with the SSSN/NDGO fight in episode 2, but neither motif had been used before)

Saph

Morgan hopefully you'll come around to Winter cause she really is a great character. She truly does love Weiss and is her best family member right now.

Ryan

Morgan: "It fills me with such a sense of dread!" CRWBY: "...good." Interesting take on the dove/crow symbolism. Never noticed that before. Take a shot every time Morgan doesn't trust something. ... ... ...hopital.

Lavender Onyxheart

very very badly misread the relationship of Weiss and Winter, hopefully further episodes will change your mind of her, cause you're attributing maliciousness to winter where there isn't any, she was raised in the military and does not have the person skills of a civilian

Phoenix_mercury

Completely understandable as it's not obvious their ages especially early on

S.K. Kramer

So, these episodes are one of the unfortunate cases of parts of the show that aged poorly, and something the writers probably wish they could do over. Winter is NOT meant to come off as abusive. She's supposed to read as stern, but ultimately loving towards Weiss, and the one member of Weiss' family that Weiss actually cares about. I get how these two episodes don't do a great job of conveying that, but that's how they were meant. We've thankfully come a long way in how we treat this sort of thing

Caroline Adams

Winter is actually not abusive and their dad did cut her off as well and disowned her after she left for the military. She may seem a little cold at first but give her a chance she gets development as a character

Xýliandra

Ep 3: Yeah, Winter comes off as abusive and mean at first but trust me. Once you meet the rest of Weiss' family, you'll see Winter in a different light!! Oh, and I too, love uncle Qrow😁 Ep 4: 42:32-42:45 Valid response!!! Great reaction overall. I've watched up till the end of V4 at this point, and LET ME TELL YOU MORGAN!! You are NOT ready for the Volume 3 finale! Dude, it broke my heart!! Other than that, I look forward to your next reaction and I'll see you, in your next one, Morgan. Peace✌🏼

James Pagel

You don't know that they watch ahead so even us on patreon are behind where they actually are

Ryan

It's a memetic joke in two parts. The first part is a statement of intent to do something unwise, the second post is that you are going to the hospital, but it's terse and misspelled because of how fucked up you are from the thing you did.

Suplee215

Thats valid. I put it entirely in a part of this universe is a level of joke violence that is far beyond the normal reality (we see it come up a few more times before and after this) but it is inconsistent enougg where I can easily see people not buying in and viewing the slap differently. The fact that even when having good moments with Weiss Winter is clearly very cold and Introverted/awkward i think makes it easy to take this in a different light than the one that just happened too. One issue with tbe show switching tones so much is it can muddle moments like tbis

Zora Brightwood

Compared to the rest of the schnee family Winter is a Tiger Cub

Zora Brightwood

Whenever I think of Qrow I think of the superstition of counting crows brings different misfortunes like One Crow is Bad Luck, and a large number means death.

Symbolic Remnant

We love women with very well-fitting military uniforms… and that love gets us into a lot of trouble.

Symbolic Remnant

Winter’s a *little* abusive at first (physically at least.) … because between 18 years of their father and the rest of her life so far in the military, her tenderness stat is… not zero, but like, 2/10 at most. Also, this isn’t the last time a bad slap will get played for laughter just because it comes from a hot woman, just saying

Phoenix_mercury

Tbf with her upbringing+immediately running to the *military* I'm gonna say her ability to not be in "work mode" isn't exactly great and she does exactly know *how* to express herself without the full on stern-ness as well as being in a foreign kingdom and the whole "keeping up appearances" cz ya know, her boss is literally the leader of said military

Luna

Winter is definitely an acquired taste, very military

scotti

you're definitely going to (i assume) grow more attached to winter. i don't wanna spoil much but it's one of those where the entirety of the family is the reason winter and weiss are the way they are. don't forget, winter's older, she was presumably with their father alone for years.

Globe Blotter

You'll come to love Winter, I promise (she's real hot)

S.K. Kramer

Oh yeah, I agree totally. She's meant to read as cold and stern, Ironwood's perfect soldier. I'm just trying to let Morgan know that the show is never going to act like Winter has been abusive towards Weiss, because that's not what they were trying to convey. But I understand Morgan's reading of it. Them not reading Winter how the show wanted her come off is a failing of the show, or at least a sign that we have become more sensitive to how characters treat one another in the ten + years since this volume aired. I adore RWBY, it's one of my all time favorites, but there are a couple of moments in these early volumes that haven't aged great.

taqueets

I'd recommend looking at the slapping in the early volumes as "slap stick" humor written by dudes from a generation where that stuff was nonchalant and not meant to be social commentary or portray the character doing it as the devil incarnate or evil, or even abusive (which is weird to say). Trust me, I get feeling that way though. Especially based on how humor like that has changed drastically, and it's not shown nonchalantly like that anymore (nor should it be). They definitely go away from this stuff later. There's going to be one more volume with a couple more scenarios of the same written stupidity from another character. In my opinion, after watching the whole series, it's weird seeing it again from S1 Winter (feels OOC). She became one of my favourite characters as we see more of her and her own struggles in finding her place in the world, and it's like she's a different character later (probably because she gets fleshed out more and is not stuck so one dimensional as she was here). Like they realized how stupid it was. There's abusive stuff that they're serious about, and it's clear in how they have the characters react to it. Versus how the people getting slapped like this react (or more accurately, don't react). It's very weird, and a sign of the times, but they did grow out of it. Again, it's completely understandable being uncomfortable about it, because in our reality it is abusive. Just explaining that the show doesn't treat it seriously like it does other things because of outdated thinking on writing, and the way they just seem to ignore it and move away from it quietly for good tells me how they were thinking at the time. They treated it like a nonchalant gag, and as times changed and they grew throughout the making of the series the slapping disappeared and is never addressed.

BartonBelladonna

I cannot believe how much she has completely misinterpreted everything about Winter. this generation of adults is so easy to misinterpret every little thing XD

Todd Lucas

A lot of people read Ironwood wrong. He isn't trying to start a war, he is trying to find ways to stop the one he knows is coming. It isn't that he is heartless (as the Tin Man was during the journey in Oz), it is that he can't afford to let his feelings get in the way of protecting his people.

TheCasualNerd

I think your take on Winter is valid especially if you have abuse issues too. There's more nuance to the relationship but its definitely not in the healthiest place. Your comment that Winter is like Weiss if she didnt maje friends is apt though. Winter comes from the same abusive home, but instead of getting out to a place to make friends and grow she got out by getting into the military... not exactly the warmest most trauma-healing environment. So Winter expresses her love for Weiss the only way she knows how, discipline and strict guidelines like the military. But at the end we see her encourage Weiss to keep exploring thr world and learning about herself because she knows thats good for her sister. She is probably aware her means of affection arent the greatest and sees Weiss is coping much better, so she encourages that. All that nuance being said though, that doesn't make the hitting or scolding "ok" or "good" and its totally valid to see that and say fuck this bitch

ml

I mean, I do think not all families interact in the same way. My relationship with my siblings are way more like Winter and Weiss's, which's probably because I'm from an Asian background, but I think that kind of dynamic is pretty common in Asian family. And I do think Winter cares a lot about Weiss and I adore their relationship and relate to it a lot.
