No, my mic didn't die in the last few minutes. I was rendered physically speechless.

Yes that happened in the game. It created...let's just say controversy.

AdrianF

Lots stopped playing at this point in the game (and, for different reasons another point further on). Personally, I think the story is better than Part 1. Can't wait for next week, I just feel they're gonna leave this season hanging just as things got interesting in the game.

It’s fascinating to see your reaction to this. It’s exactly how I was, mouth open, shocked when I first played the part 2 game. It’s a gut punch. It’s a confronting storyline that shows there are consequences even to what we might think of as “just” actions. The game had even made you play as Abby, not knowing who she was. And then afterwards it returned control to the player as her again and it felt so weird. Persevering was a rewarding experience from a storytelling perspective. I remember at the time this caused so much controversy.

As others said, yes this happens in the game, and it was quite controversial. Few changes from the game: In the game Tommy was with Joel not Dina, Jackson Hole wasn't attacked. and we didn't know who Abby was, or why she killed Joel until later in the game. You can take solace in knowing we're all angry too.

Yea it happened and Joel's death happened very early in the game too! and this is where fans divide in the game. But in my opinion without spoilers , the Last of Us part 2— the game is one of the most brilliant pieces of storytelling I’ve ever seen , it brought out so much raw emotions I never knew I could have for any video game . I loved it! Which makes me excited for seasons 2 and 3 And to be fair .. both Joel and Abby, even tho they have done very shirty things.. they are both heroes in their own story , in their own minds and you would never be able to convince them otherwise Thats what makes it great!

Kimberly Barela

Yeah that happened. We didn't have words either. Played the game. And this still makes me cry.

Kimberly Barela

I second this. Also played the game, and if you let it work on you, oh man was it such and experience. This game grew me as a human.

As others said, you are not the only one who reacted this way. When I came to this part in the game I actually had to find a Youtube streamer to watch her reaction. At the end of that episode she almost decided to quit playing the game. She came back a couple days later and continued. No spoilers but it should be well worth continuing. As an added bit of poetry. In the official Last of Us podcast (hosted by Troy Baker) they confirmed what I had forgotten. The song Through The Valley which plays at the end was a recording sung by Ashley Johnson who played Ellie in the game and Ellie's mother in season one.

"An unarmed doctor" No, the doctor was moving towards Joel with a scalpel in hand, that's not unarmed. Not exactly accurate tbh.

When this show was announced there were a few moments I was dreading to see non gamers reactions too. We got to a big one! Devisive when it originally happened and definitely now too ! Enjoyed your reaction to the rest of the episode too, this was the big chaos episode alot of people said was missing in season 1. This was a big uproar in the game too, alot of people stopped playing at this point and refunded purchases etc. They altered it slightly in the show to give the explanation from Abbey at this point, in an attempt to garner sympathy for her character I think.

Others have posted most of this info, but I'll still give you my thoughts: While some of the events were slightly altered (who is with whom, among other things), the core story beats are the same as the game. Most significantly, the game has an even more unconventional narrative structure; it provides the player less context about Abby at this point in the story and has had us play as her for various points before the latter events of this episode. As for your reaction of being livid, that feeling is widely shared among the fanbase. Ignoring the bad-faith actors, the question of whether you love or hate this story is largely based on how the rest of it works for you. It worked for me. This pain was worth it. It isn't for some. I'll be interested to see where you land on it. Lastly, Ashley Johnson, the voice and performance artist who played Ellie in the games, is the one singing the closing song of this episode. It was also the song used for the first teaser trailer of the second game in 2016, four years before its actual release in 2020.

DON'T SPOIL IT FOR HER DAMN IT

Florian Brand

Trust Neil and Craig's storytelling abilities. All that pain is worth it - eventually. One little glimmer of hope for now: Did you notice the guitar in Ellie's room when Jesse picked her up for the patrol?

AdrianF

A bracelet-level catch.

What did I spoil? I answered her questions about game differences so far, and I didn't reveal anything about how the story progresses.

Just watched this reaction on Youtube, so I'm hella late...but I just want to say: Your feeling of anger is precisely what was intended. I didn't play the game, but I followed the controversies that this game's storyline caused, and that was something I respected from the writers. I look forward to hearing your opinions in the long run once you see where this is going to go. I won't say anything else so I don't accidentally spoil anything, but yeah...I'll be here after the final episode. I hope we can really have the discussion about the story, your reaction, and your feelings about the choices when you see them all. On a side note...like I said, I didn't play the game, but I knew about Joel's death being the inciting incident in that. What I wasn't sure about is whether or not HBO and the show runners would dare to do something so daring, or at least do it as early as it happened in the game. I was like those you talked to, thinking maybe make it a season 2 finale and make season 3 the rest of the second game's storyline. Or maybe they'd change things completely to keep Internet Zaddy Pedro Pascal on the show. But I was at a friend's place when this episode aired, watching Wrestlemania...and during the main event, here's a Hollywood Reporter notification on my phone "Showrunners dish on that shocking death" and I'm just like...Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuudge, come on.
