Au revoir James Bond! Well, Daniel Craig anyway. Looking forward to eventually going back to the earlier films, but it seems we have come to the end of this run!

Oooh, funtime Sunday!

Giving my own take on the discussion surrounding this movie, I can only speak anecdotally. I generally try to avoid online “outrage” over those types of things, but I remember the backlash being worse during the marketing, and dying down once the movie came out. If I had to guess, it’s because Lashana Lynch was 007, but she never actually took the name Bond. As you said, 007 being a position and not a single person has been pretty well known, so a fair number of people realized their concerns were unfounded. Of course, some people were still mad, but they were going to be mad regardless of the film’s quality or the story. One argument I have heard regarding Bond being played by a woman (I don’t know if Craig himself made this point, but it certainly fits within his perspective) is that it’s important to remember the qualities that make Bond Bond. Many of them are not positive. In particular, he is a serial womanizer who objectifies women in numerous scenes. If you make him a woman, you either have to remove that crucial element of the character, or keep it in in an altered state, which I don’t think would be done very well. Personally, I generally don’t care about anything other than the story being good, making sense, and the actors doing a good job. I thought Lashana Lynch played a convincing spy and bad ass and I would have no objection to seeing her headline an action movie of her own.

Thank you for your reaction and analysis! I feel many people like Bond as a cool secret agent with skills to save the world from megalomaniacs, and getting too deep into his angst takes away from that (we can get that from other movies and characters). That's why I agree that Casino Royale was great, but the other Craig "Bond" films were fine, and as such kinda disappointing as Bond films. I don't think we would appreciate Benoit Blanc with his "Oh, sh!tballs!" getting a Shutter Island spin of a movie.

One thing I noticed that I really liked was when they were toasting Bond, everyone took a sip of the drink, except Q downed the entire glass. Just a nice little punctuation showing the respect and friendship they had. Ana De Armas line about "three weeks training" was a reference to how long she trained for her scenes in the film. I absolutely loved her character and as small as her role was, I'd love to see her in future Bond films or playing an agent on her own.
