Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Probably one of the corniest of episodes but I suspect that is supposed to be. It opens with the gang reacting to a Bollywood musical for heaven's sakes. The writers knew what they were doing. And so naturally some pretty corny dialogue. But also some pretty chuckle-worthy jokes as well. Xander bad mouthing Angel followed by the immediate "Hey man how's it going?" fuckin' kills me every time 😆 Good camp should be self aware and I feel like this was. But the possibility exists that my fan-coloured glasses are causing me to give the writers too much benny of the denny, as the kids say. I choose to believe it's the former.

Definitely agree about the corniness dial being maxed in this episode. And the melodrama of the "When you kiss me, I want to die" scene. I think this is maybe the weakest episode of the season, and I'd rank it pretty far down in the series as a whole. It still has some highlights, like Willow dressing down Angel and Giles at the same time. And you have to give props to the show for having the guts to tackle a subject like date rape (and I think it handled it pretty well for the most part). But overall, it's just kind of a cringe episode. I get so much secondhand embarrassment from the frat bros lol. But hey, it's good to get the worst episode of the season out of the way early. I think there's a pretty damn good run of episodes up after this.

I think I know what you're implying and I think that's totally valid. Personally I think I'd still rank this one lower, but it's close. It's all opinions anyway, no right or wrong.

Not a great episode but it has great moments like most "bad" episodes of Buffy do. Next episode is one that most fans like a lot.

James Fleischman

David Greenwalt is invaluable as writer and producer (and showrunner for Angel) but his directing leaves a little to be desired.

Good lord, this is one of the most fun episodes! Cordelia is also an absolute MVP and truly one of the best TV characters of all time. I really enjoy these monster of the week times that slowly work their magic on the season's arc. It's wonderful to see you covering Buffy in all its glory. It's a very hard show to beat.
