I've sobbed my eyes out on camera, but I don't think I've ever felt like I was going to be sick. That was...yeah. This series is my kryptonite 😅

Look on the bright side, only 3 episodes to go. Seriously though, hope you're okay, that scene is absolutely awful to experience for the first time, it is pulled directly from Sledge's book. The next two episodes aren't easier. Have tissues, and maybe a trashcan close by because there are some more gory and upsetting things ahead. I really appreciate you sticking it out. The reason this series is my favorite out of the three is because it conveys how absolutely terrible the war in the Pacific was. For most non-history majors in school, we mostly learn about Pearl Harbor, maybe the battle of Midway, the island hopping campaign, the Phillipines, Iwo Jima, and then the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I love this series because it does not make the viewer feel good; it shows the horrors of war that a lot of people may not think about. The Battle of Peleliu is a bit controversial; it cost the US 11-12,000 men killed and wounded and two months to take five square miles of coral with an airstrip on it in what US planners thought would take three days and would support the Liberation of the Philippines. During this time the US would start the invasion of the Philippines without having the airfield on Peleliu secured and sink 26 ships of the Japanese Navy at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. To put it into perspective, during this episode and the previous one in Western Europe, Operation Market Garden (band of brothers EP.4-5), the first push into Germany by the Allies at the Battle of Aachen and the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest (another really costly battle the Allies ended up losing leading to the Battle of the Bulge) are going on. In Eastern Europe i believe the Soviets are pushing to Warsaw in poland and through Romania, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and parts of Slovakia. And back home Oppenheimer and Co. at Los Alamos have begun designing what will become Fat Man, the implosion plutonium bomb that would be tested in the Trinity Test and dropped on Nagasaki.

Jacqui, I'm gratified that you have come back to this series. I wish there was something I could say to make it easier on you to watch these episodes, but they made them this way for a reason. I'm sure this is not lost on you. In my opinion, when Snafu shoots the Japanese soldier to end his suffering when the other Marine is trying to cut the gold from his teeth, I think it was just an act of compassion. That's a line he won't cross. And when he warns Sledge that the dead Japanese soldiers have germs, it was actually a corpsman that told Sledge that. But it has more dramatic impact in the episode if it's Snafu that tells him.

Don't know if you picked up on it but when Capt Haldane was killed and they stopped to cover him with a blanket, this could have been one made in his father's factory which he talked about earlier. When Sledge was sitting on the beach at the end he was holding and studying the same type blanket. A master stroke of writing to have something so simple convey so much.

Movie Night

Great catch! I didn't pick up on that detail, but I think that's because I was trying not to hurl lol
