i enjoy this episode and has one of my favorite Giles quotes "Unbelievable. 'Do you like my mask? Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead.' Americans!"

When it originally aired every episode got a "previously on" but they were almost never included in the home releases, surprising to see one here. It always felt deliberate to have Oz (with the red hair this episode) to say the episode title.

I do appreciate the show making sure Buffy has to deal with the fact that she hurt people by leaving. At the moment they're all ganging up on her, I feel like they ceded the moral high ground rather quickly. Buffy deserves blame for abandoning her family, up to and including the family who demanded that she abandon them. She also deserves credit for choosing to correct the situation. She didn't come home because she couldn't make it on her own. She came home because she learned that was where she belonged, and decided she wanted to be there. Maybe she shouldn't expect everyone to forgive and forget, but not one of them distinguished themselves as wise and righteous by comparison... Except Giles. Love that man! Also loved getting another little glimpse of how he wasn't always a boy scout...

I agree. It has always been interesting to me how Joyce when she saw the gathering was too big did not stop it.

There is always fallout. When Buffy got back I heard her say "you did not know what I was dealing with" and no body asked her what had happened to make her run. Xander for me is the one who shouldn't say anything because he betrayed both Buffy and Willow by not letting Buffy know what Willow was trying to do in restoring Angel's soul. It does feel good that Buffy's friends are willing to forgive as they patch, fix, repair the bonds they have.

The Trudells are traveling again

It still drives me nuts that Joyce takes no responsibility for what it must have been like for Buffy to hear her say “Don’t come back” and passes it off as just human fallibility. Well, the same could be said for Buffy taking her at her word, and Joyce is supposed to be the adult in the situation.

Movie Night

I forgot that they didn't know, and especially having watched a few more episodes of season 3, knowing that they had no idea he had been "restored" and she had to kill him anyway. I appreciate the show taking a "communication is important" stance 😅

Movie Night

Ah gotcha! I think "previously on" is something we take for granted, since continuous stories are so much more common. I imagine Buffy was one of the first that probably needed a proper "previously on" segment.

Movie Night

That's totally fair! It definitely played as a "coming out" parallel, but absolutely a moment where the adult should be an adult and acknowledge that there's processing something huge, and then there's saying something that fucked up to your kid and not apologizing 😳

Garrick Smalley

It is one of the things I love about this show their "communication is important" stance.

I guffaw every single time.

This episode is such a love and frustration as I get older. Buffy really got put through the ringer and I also understand the feelings of betrayal but my God! Also Jonathon with that guitar, priceless. Two best Giles lines "Americans." and "Would you like me to convince you?" I also LOVE Joyce's stray cat eulogy which can also be applied to Buffy over and over. She's SO good that Joyce. RIP Pat. Her many classes will feel emptier and less enthusiastic without her.
