I apologize for not posting this yesterday, but I'm not kidding that I actually fell into bed and slept for more than 12 hours after this. I have been so emotionally drained from doing both BoB and MotA that I've had to allot more time in my schedule for sleep 😂 Which is probably a good thing, since it's literally become an inside joke for you guys that I never sleep 😅 Anyway, wonderful episode, enjoy! And I'll be watching episode 4 when it drops tonight, so bring on the tears! Woohoo!!!

Jacqui - loving your perspective on the stylistic choices of this vs. Band of Brothers. I'm hoping that you'll enjoy the style choices of The Pacific just as much.

This was an insane attempt on the part of the 8th, there are some things I didn't like but considering they squeezed a 12 hr mission with literal hours of aerial combat in the span of roughly 30 min, they did a great job overall. The one thing the show i think is failing a little short on is even on planes that return, crews don't remain intact, baby face as example, was a replacement on his 2nd mission and everyone on the crew was on their 10th and essentially already passed their life expectancy yet not even halfway to their mission limit.

Those Belgian resistance fighters were certainly brave and I can't state how brave these pilots were. True heroes.

So happy to get to see your reaction to this! This is definitely the episode that captures what air battle was like for these bombers. Take a break! You deserve it! Get some rest. Let Firefly be a nice emotional break for yourself (trust me, it will be)! And thanks for all your hard work getting this stuff out.

This episode is so amazing (and painful). The moment they told them the target, my heart sank, because I knew what was coming(It's going to get worse before it gets better, but it will eventually, when the Little Friends arrive). I have to say, I had the same emotional reaction to the episode as you did, especially that mid-point in it, the montage of suffering. It just broke my heart. I saw one historian reviewing the episode starting to weep as too (I can't watch it without crying, and I've seen it about five times). Incidentally, I'm only too proud to say that Curt Biddick and I share the same alma mater, UC Davis. In answer to your question, ball turret gunners didn't wear their chutes, as it was too cramped to do so. In fact, a lot of the crew members didn't wear them, for the same reason. If they had to bail out, only then they would put them on. I know there has been criticism because the way the show just puts us directly into the action so soon, without as much character development, but I think that was a deliberate creative decision. The first three episodes are the shock treatment for us, with unrelenting violence, just the way it was for the airmen. They'd been fed a load about what it was going to be like, and then had this tremendous slap in the face by the horrifying reality. So, we get it too. Now we get to see how this is affecting them. I mean, look at the interaction between Egan and Cleven at the end. They are, in their own distinct ways, really hanging on by a thread after Regensburg. Personally, I just see this show going from strength to strength.

I'm just astounded at people who are complaining about the CGI in the show. Are they serious? You can count the airworthy B-17's in existence today on your hands, and they are of different variants. What were they supposed to do? Just shoot up or crash them for the TV show?

In November 42 American and British troops invaded North Africa. German and Italian troops surrendered in May of 43. Around 250,000 were captured. The raid in this episode was in August 43 so all of North Africa from Morroco to Egypt was in Allied hands. This raid shows why the British Air Force had switched to nighttime bombing. Losses during daylight were to heavy to maintain. At this time no fighter aircraft had the fuel to escort the bombers all the way to their targets so German fighters would wait for our fighters to go home and then would attack the bombers. 60 bombers were shot down and 95 more were heavily damaged. 129 reached Africa but only 80 would fly again. Those conducted a bombing ran in France on the way back to England. Germany generally followed the Geneva Convention on the western front so thousands of airmen were made P.O.W.s during the war. Against the Russians the Germans ignored the conventions and treated captured Russians harshly if not killing them outright. Almost 3 million Russian P.O.W.s died in German prison camps.
