The thing with this episode is that there is a unifying theme, regardless of the different physical circumstances of the main characters are. All the characters start out feeling alone, but at the end, they realize they're not. Even the choice of the Woody Guthrie song, 'Tear the Fascists Down' emphasizes the unity of people. 'We'll get through this together'.

The murder of POWs, the Russelsheim Massacre, depicted in the episode really did happen, though Bucky was not part of it, and it happened a few months later. I'm glad they included it in the episode, because it deserved to be told. Thankfully, the perpetrators of the massacre got the punishment they richly deserved after the war. Arrested, tried, and executed or sentenced to long terms of prison. As to the Flak Houses, these were manor houses donated by wealthy people to the government, and they represent the Army's realization that airmen were cracking up under the incredible stress and they were desperate to come up with any means of dealing with the problem. They were only partially successful, I'm afraid, but at least they tried. The POW camp, Stalag-Luft III, was also the scene of 'The Great Escape' (like in the movie) which happened with the British POWs there in 1944.

The Germans attacking the allied pilots were part of a propaganda campaign by Reich Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels to incite violence against so called "Terror Flieger" or "Terror fliers." These were not spontaenous but rather the result of Goebbels filling the population with hatred of the allied pilots bombing German cities.

Alex Amerling

It was part of a plan by Goebbels to stir up hatred and violence against "Terror Flieger."

To answer the your question at the end regarding the swastika’s on the fort, those are kill marks, the number of fighters shot down. For bombing missions they would typically paint a bomb with every fifth bomb tally being an alternating color.

Erik Crosby

The reason there were swastikas on the plane is they would paint a swastika under each gun position for each German fighter shot down by that position. Regarding Westgate, Crosby never actually found out what she did. I don't think it's been confirmed anywhere, but the prevailing theory seems to be that she worked at Bletchley Park on the Enigma codebreaking.

So glad I was right about Buck ;) Will you also react to the documentary? It should be released on 15th of March, narrated by Tom Hanks. Pretty sure it’s called The Bloody Hundredth.

E

Perfectly said, thank you Mike

That documentary is gonna be legendary. So happy they're doing that. Especially with Tom Hanks narrating and the veterans talking.

“The Chant” - Artie Shaw is the song Rosie was humming and tapping to before he got into the b17

My favorite Fan Theory on Westgate is that she was actually Princess Elizabeth, who was serving at the time. (She was not, but damn, that would be so interesting based on this episode, at least…)

The people convicted of the massacre tried to use that excuse. Didn’t work for them, doesn’t stand up now.

Crosby didn’t have an affair with her. His affair was with another woman he knew before the war.

Erik Crosby

I wasn't saying that he did, only that he never found out what her job was.
