“I feel bad for these Minions, man, they’re forced to help out with all these party shenanigans” - Andrew

On this week’s episode, the guys welcome back Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert (Talking Simpsons) to join the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza and chat about the dreadful animated sequel, Despicable Me 2! Why is this film so obsessed with Gru getting married? How funny are all the Weekend at Bernie’s-esque gags throughout this movie? And when will these Minions finally complete their takeover of this planet? PLUS: Would you eat Minion-themed food?

Despicable Me 2 stars the voices of Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand, Ken Jeong, Elsie Fisher, Dana Gaier, Moises Arias, Nasim Pedrad, Kristen Schaal, and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom; directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud.Be sure to pick up your tickets for our summer time WORLD WIDE DIGITAL EVENT where we’ll be talking all about the action classic SPEED! Paul

What a Despicable topic for discussion.

Lance Flexington

I started listening to Talking Simpsons thanks to the crossover episode with the movie, I'm glad those loveable nerds are back for some horrible animation

Convincing John

Listening right now and regarding how minions are created... maybe it's like how Ursula turns folks that cross her into little sad seaweed people. You don't pay Gru on time, boom: Minion.

Dave S

"a roofer dies on my roof, I get his children: Eric szyszka"..... Never change my friend lololol

Dan Craftwerk

I appreciate these episodes. I had to throw a despicable me themed party for my son 12 yrs ago, too much Pharrell

Ray

Chris and Steve were shot into outer space by minions.

Tim O'

I think the minions murder Napoleon Bonaparte in one of these movies during some stupid Minions Through History montage, so this is plausible.

Tim O'

Look, there's been a lot of talk of "This is the worst movie we've ever done" over the years, but this is the only one I can remember to get two hosts to call in sick to the same episode 😂

Frank Grimes

You weren't...happy? (I'll see myself out)

Tristan

Det du det det Cabin ee Steve.

Eren Keskin

Thank goodness I'm not a native English speaker, so I don't have to suffer through Russell Brand's voice acting. Keep that grifter away from children's movies—or any movie for that matter.

Eren Keskin

Look under your chair! Everyone gets a Minion fleshlight/dildo set

I.C. Weiner

The baby becomes a bug, but does not say, "Suck it" instead his first words were, "Daddy," and you are supposed to cry ETA: Speaking of Peacock originals, there is some Mastermind Peacock original series that just came out/is coming out

MarkNM

You roped those poor Talking Simpsons guys into this mess with the flimsy excuse of "Oh, it's got a Nacho Hat ripoff gag." For shame. For the record though, the Minions Popsicles are kind of great.

Alex Klopfenstein

Despicable Me is still advertising on bananas, saw it this morning as I was listening to this episode

G Goldhar

I imagine turning into a minion is roughly parallel to what the Tall Man does in Phantasm right like he car crushes your body into a little freak

We Hate Movies

Tim, I think that's what I was thinking of when I was trying to remember literally *anything* that happens in the Minions movie! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Kinda wild they decided to do a Mastermind TV show before any Gru or Minion-related content! - Andrew

Frank Grimes

I've only seen the latest one cause my nephew wanted to see it...but when you guys brought up dropped subplots...lol that must be a DM staple..cause they dropped like 2-3 subplots in the 4th one. One I thought that would pay off is their new neighbor...but that plot is dropped before the third act

MA

The guys talking about the minions taking up too much space in this one...let me tell you. The newest movie is so bad with Gru and family "plot". You will be begging for minions screen time. It is barely a movie. A massive POS even given the comps within the series.

Frank Grimes

Lol, you're so right...hardly a story.

MA

I'd also suggest one of the guys sacrifice themselves to watch DM4. It's that bad. Someone needs to feel this. I've never had Erik's "this is not a movie" resonate so much then sitting watching this.

Derek Baxter

Sorry to inform Andrew, Gru does indeed say “Honey badger don’t care” in DM4, to, at least in my screening, a very quiet theater.

Todd B

I now have the sound of Steve Carrell in my head declaring, in full faux-Euro accent "You think when you die, you go to Heaven - you come to us!"

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Having Fargo Sex

Instead of Minion themed foods, what do you think actual Minions taste like? I'm guessing a lemon pepper rotisserie chicken or maybe a General Tso's? Those are my guesses.

Luke Gordnier

Going to Universal this weekend, will not be going on the minions ride but that secret life of Pets ride is fun.

Jaime Lee Ezell

I love the Mike Reiss trivia!! He visited Alabama in 2019 and I got to meet him! I quoted some of his DVD commentary to him and he said “wow, I do have fans in Alabama!” He is the best!

Jaime Lee Ezell

I loved the Minions banana flavored tic tacs, sadly they were discontinued.

Tim O'

Anything Minion-flavored should taste like you've accidentally bitten into cyanide.

Robert Calvillo

Not sure if anybody mentioned it, but the Minions are a total copy of the Rabbids from Ubisoft 🤔😋

Aaron

Married with Children did a whole Village People "YMCA" themed episode in one of the later seasons when it got real cartoons. Fire up the animation damnation for when that comes back.

D Arthur

Yup. It bs there isn't more Rabbids games & merch. They are hilarious.

Melissa Benjamin

I cannot stand the Minions! Or Tweety Bird for that matter! The people you were describing with their tattoos etc, we call blockers here. They are the same people who wear their NASCAR and SpongeBob pajama pants to Walmart.

Erin MacAllister

There is an LGBT-Gru joke in here somewhere but I can’t find it

HockeenightsCT

Adding to the long list of stolen ideas in this movie: The Smurfs cartoon first put forth the concept that when a lovable primary-colored cartoon character is infected with a disease that makes them evil they will turn purple.

Michael Mora

Ok…so my kid and his friends have forced me to see too many of these, so here’s the details so you can know everything without subjecting yourselves. (Spoilers like it matter…): •Minions movies are prequels and the only clever “joke” was one of the criminals in Minions: Rise Of Gru being name Jean Claw Van Damme (he has a giant lobster claw hand), being French and voiced by JCVD. • Despicable Me 3 features Gru’s long lost brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell), looks/sounds exactly like Gru but who wears white and has flowing blond hair. •Despicable Me 4 has Will Farrell as the “villain”. It also ends like Lethal Weapon 4, by having a song and remembering the old movies (like the series is over)…in this case a singing of “Everyone Wants To Rule The World” and features a look at every villain from all the movies (no voice credits for any of them). •Doctor Nefario is in the movie for 10 seconds, barely speaks and gets literally put away once he’s served his function. No Russell Brand credit and didn’t sound like him. Hope my sacrifice helps spare others! Love the show.

Jamie

Despicable choice💛

Darbley

I have seen this movie too many times. When my daughter was 2-4 these first two movies were her goto. So it holds a special place in my heart. Not because it's good. Thinking back. We always just referenced one-liners. Like in the cupcake shop when Lucy asks "you know this guy" and the delivery of "yes. He's one of my minions" is still funny to us. That's about it now that my kids are older. We saw the 4th one last week. None of us like it. So, I think we've officially grown out if this at ages 9 and 11.

Busiris

I always love that the WHM gang makes an effort to discuss movies basically from scene to scene in chronological order. I rarely skip watching a movie for the show (except for instances like this one) but it's nice to hear them break down movie plots as clearly as they do for those who don't watch the movies. Even after listening to this episode, if someone asked me what the plot of this movie was, I'd honestly have no clue whatsoever. This is of course NOT a slight on the show at all, but rather on the movie.

Smaug

I watched Rogue Nation in DBox and I had to use the control panel to turn the Dboxing to its lowest level and even off sometimes. I would've liked to see Andrew in the theatre struggling with a full bladder and being completely unamused at being tossed around

Erin MacAllister

The minions being named after Simpson’s writers implies that there is a minion named after john schwartzwalder, would that minion be a libertarian crank like his namesake? And would the Conan minion have more hair than the average minion?

Jamie

Currently the tie in Megamind sequel is the lowest rated movie of 2024 on Letterboxd. It's pretty excruciating.

Bryce Zubriski

I’m a big enough person to admit that the guests on this episode were not as unbearable as I have been led to expect (Bob Mackey still can’t “Yes and” to save his life). I was able to listen to the episode start to finish and had a few laughs. Truly shows how amazingly talented the WHM crew is that they can even elevate Bob & Henry.

We Hate Movies

It was a real photo finish that afternoon! - Andrew

SomeBloke

Like with many, young relatives have pre-exposed me to this hell. That first movie has a bad habit of introducing ideas that could, theoretically, result in good films, and doing nothing with them, and this has the opposite issue where the entire script seems to have been sticky notes reading “Gru gets married?” and “More Minions somehow.” Thank you for taking some of the pain away with this episode at least.

Hard To Gwil

I was the best man at my 34 year old brother's Minion themed wedding. We had matching Minion suspenders. Southern Ontario is a special kind of hell.

Darryl Bowen

White House Down was my first and only DBox experience. Over two hours of being tossed around and annoyed.

RaggyB

Bob and Henry work well in a pinch hitting capacity

RaggyB

I actually kind of enjoyed DM1 when I inevitably saw it. 2 and so on were what I expected the first movie to be
