“They rat-a-tat off each other, and Joe Pesci really well...” - Chris, on the lead cast’s chemistry

On this month’s total banger We ❤️ Movies episode, we’re gifting ourselves an early Christmas present by re-watching and talking all about the total I-Got-It-By-The-Way sequel, Lethal Weapon 2! How fantastic is that toilet sequence? Is this the only LW film where Pesci is tolerable? How funny is it that Steve Kahan, the actor who plays Captain Murphy, looks and sounds exactly like the film's late, great director, Dick Donner? And why couldn’t they have kept Shane Black’s cocaine plane idea? PLUS: The villainous South Africans from this film decide to become The Strangers!

Lethal Weapon 2 stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Derrick O’Connor, Patsy Kensit, Darlene Love, Traci Wolfe, Steve Kahan, Mark Rolston, Jenette Goldstein, Dean Norris, Juney Smith, Nestor Serrano, Grand L. Bush, Jack McGee, and Joss Ackland as Arjen Rudd; directed by Richard Donner.

We hope you are enjoying We ❤️ Movies! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon subscriber that you are. Your support keeps the lights on around the old clubhouse and keeps us on the air. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you chose to spend some time with us!

Kureigu

Been looking forward to this after the recent 1 and 3 episodes.

Craig

“Diplomatic immunity.” - Hunter Biden, probably.

Frank Grimes

Chris' long John silver story...😂😂😂...his uncle crazy

Les Whinen

Jim Jefferies has the best joke about the South African accent. "It's exactly the same as an Australian accent, except imagine they are punching a black person"

Dan H

What do they mean by “I got it by the way” ?

Ed Harris

Always loved this one in a way. It’s even better than the first.

Matt

Straight from the Tribune Triva - "Each Lethal Weapon film features a goon with glasses." TOP NOTCH WORK GOING ON OVER THERE PEOPLE. TOP NOTCH.

William K. Wolfrum

Top notch. I love Steve worrying about the sting of chlorine after a woman was blown up. Lol

Watch_N_Rewatch

Previous episode Scream 2, the WHM boys joke about The scene when they are calling out the best movie sequel in their film class at college and Tim Olphants character "wins" saying Godfather part 2. And the joke is born Everytime the WHM boys say "I got it by the way" meaning best sequel. Scream 2 is a great EP btw, recommend 👍

Hobbes Roy

Is Steve the worst friend ever? -Suicide at the first thought of danger? (So much for backup!) -Not helping to house a friend as a fugitive?? -Refusing to help a widowed man, walking an emotional razors edge, who has saved your life…with a couple of loads of laundry as said man is helping to make dinner?!? Damn Steve…

Hobbes Roy

Is Scream 2 they have a conversation about sequels better than the original, a character interrupts with saying “ I got it by the way…” before revealing the answer to be Godfather II

Les Whinen

"Dipolmatic immunity." - Jared Kusher, definitely

Busiris

Sure, it might not be a Christmas movie, but I noticed a TON of Thanksgiving stuff around the background of the grocery store scene. So honestly, close enough!!

Dan H

That’s right thanks! Totally forgot about that

Ray

Ah yes, from the director that brought you the Goonies

Moe Tilden

Question: Have none of the WHM boys heard Mel's voicemails to his ex-gf? There's no way you can talk about Lethal Weapon 2 and not address the most chilling, disgusting, racist towards black people line ever (not exaggerating) without thinking about Gibson's real feelings about Glover and Apartheid. I get it, the anti-Semitic DUI recording came first and got the coverage, but his racist, sexist, vile tirades to the mother of his child takes the cake. It's all I can think about when I see poor Danny Glover and the Murtaugh family on screen with that nazi skidmark. But I love the ep and you guys as always! Haha

Rod

Scream 2 episode when they’re talking about sequels in film class

Z

I like that of all the ones in this franchise, this is the only one that was actively chasing the zeitgeist at the time – the anti-apartheid movement at its apex before Mandela's release from jail – and managing to pull it off.

Rod

We didn’t have a drive thru Subway but we did have the nation’s last Popeye’s with a buffet

MarkNM

This movie used to remind me of the novelty song "I've Never Met a Nice South African," by those grotesque Spitting Image puppets. Christ on a bike, those things were creepy.

Aaron

Had a drive thru Subway. Was it's own stand alone building that was built around the time of this film. Real solid memories of getting decent sandwiches there. On a related Midwest food note, Chili and Cinnamon Rolls is a good combo.

Darryl Bowen

I had a drive thru subway near me until it shut down two years ago

allegedlycool

I wonder if Chris's uncle did that at the Route 8 LJS in Shaler, north of Pittsburgh.

David

I'm old enough to remember the original blurb on the back of the VHS cover released in Australia, which confirms that the collapse of the house on stilts was done for real ie. no miniatures.

Oh! That Guy.

One of my favorite movie Easter Eggs: When Murtaugh is messing with the tv before Rianne's commercial, you can see clips of "And All Through The House"; a Christmas Tales from the Crypt episode starring Mary Ellen Trainor. There's your Christmas movie connection.

I couldn't figure out which TFTC episode that was, but I knew it was that show! Thanks for clarifying. - Andrew

I’m not positive if this is the correct forum, but, I wanted to let each of you guys know something. My mother died back on 10/18 of this year and my father died back in 2009. It’s been incredibly rough lately for me and my family. Further, I have a job where there’s a lot of downtime so I listen to you guys almost on a daily basis. Your shows have helped me through a very bad period of my life and continue to. I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sorry if this is overly sentimental but I wanted you all to know the positive impact you have on people. Thank you so much.

Darryl Bowen

Never used the drive thru for it. Have enough issues with them skimping on product when I'm standing there watching them make something.

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Having Fargo Sex

The story of Cabin's uncle brings me back to that time I went to McDonalds after finals and ordered a crispy chicken sandwich. I went home to find that there was no chicken in said sandwich. I walked all the all the way back to make a complaint, getting the chicken and 2 complimentary apple pies. I went back to the same McDonalds 2 months later to order a crispy chicken sandwich only to check it before I left, proving that they once again forgot the chicken in my chicken sandwich. Did I get more apple pies? You bet your ass I did. Does that location still exist? No it doesn't.

So sorry for your loss, Adam. It's incredibly humbling whenever we hear that our silly, obscenity-laced movie chats can bring anyone even the slightest bit of ease or comfort in difficult situations. We're glad that we could offer some primo distraction during such a hard time. Hang in there, man. And be well. - Andrew

I work in local government finance. Every year cities have to release their financials in a report that used to be called a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. A couple of years ago the title changed nationwide because the acronym sounded just like the slur they use in this movie. I

Christopher Oxentine

I had 10-15 Subways around me and none of them have ever had a drive through. They are all in strip malls.

adam mason

The drive through subways must be a canada only thing. They're all over alberta but the thing I never understood how you make it "your way" over a drive through intercom..

adam mason

I bought a big Mac and they forgot the bun..

David Denoyer

Can confirm, I live in a small town in Ohio, we have 3 subways and 2 of which have drive thrus. I've been laughed at by a friend for telling them this cause they did not believe me. I have in fact used the drive thrus too with no issue, but I've been fucked by many other drive thrus in my life lol

Ross Tyrie

I believe the police captain is Richard Donner's cousin

DMAC

Did I hear Cabin correct that he ate at a Long John Silvers near Pittsburgh? That's bold. Damn, he must be the Lisan al Giab.

Jonathan D Lackey

Buying gold Krugerrands was the original right wing gold scam starting in the late 70s. Horde your gold because the commies are coming for it. Supporting Apartheid was a nice bonus for those fucks too

Dustin W Shuherk

Ottawa Ohio, middle of absolutely nowhere, has a subway drive thru

William Durham

Ahh, I remember being 10 and seeing this movie in the theater with my mom. Very long awkward sex scene.

Kureigu

My favourite part is when they are all laughing together about the consulate and the south African accent impression start always makes me laugh.
