“It weighs 250 pounds!” - Chris on Seagal’s huge jacket in this movie

On the season 16 premiere of We Hate Movies, we’re chatting about the outrageous Steven Seagal directorial debut, On Deadly Ground! Having first talked about this way back at our first ever live show taping, we’re getting our eyes on this one again in-studio over ten years later to ask the important questions like: How long did it take the costume department to craft Seagal’s huge fur snowsuit? Has Michael Caine ever looked more disgusting in a film? How satisfying is that Sven-Ole Thorsen torture job? And why in the world did they make us wait 70 minutes before giving us some sweet, sweet Billy Bob Thornton? PLUS: The VHS Trailer Game Cameo appearance to beat them all!

On Deadly Ground stars Steven Seagal, Joan Chen, John C. McGinley, R. Lee Ermey, Shari Shattuck, Billy Bob Thornton, Richard Hamilton, Mike Starr, Sven-Ole Thorsen, and Michael Caine as Michael Jennings; directed, sort of, by Steven Seagal.

Loved John c McGinely’s Joe cool glasses in this, all that was missing was a red shirt.

johnny stocker

Seeing stout 90s Billy Bob in a minor role as an smartass redneck mercenary is like finding a little piece of treasure.

Busiris

Where can I sign a petition that would make every episode of the podcast end with the gang signing off by saying "Happy Happy Happy"?

David

This episode has made me so happy I'm going to drink a gallon of gasoline and piss on your campfire.

Paul

“OH MY NUTS!” 😖

Eren Keskin

You get Seagal if Wilford Brimley decided to cosplay as Dracula with none of the talent whatsoever. Speaking of talent, did KGB have dirt on all of these legends?

Eren Keskin

Feels great to hear Bruce Dern, man. I, being a simpleton, fell for the news of his supposed death.

Craig

Already laughing just from the guys introducing themselves.

Matt

"Happy whatever it is" Greatest cameo of all time.

WarOfTheBees

I was kind of hoping for Chris to do the entire episode in character as Seagal.

Tim Batson

I'm only halfway through the episode and I've already laughed myself into exhaustion 😂

Andy Pjax

Should have gotten Christopher Lambert. I love your impressions.

Adam Lewis

And suddenly I'm the only guy around who's done a sweat lodge. It was very hot, dark and claustrophobic but did not give me bear powers or a monstrous fringed jacket. Or did it?

Kenzie Scott

Now, WHO is making that poor man record cameos?!

Steven Avalos

I don't recall Segal being in wrestling. He has done plenty of UFC appearances though. Also fun fact, Segal loved abusing stuntmen. But famously got choked out by the late Gene Lebell who was a stuntman in his day. Allegedly shit and pissed his pants while he was out cold.

I.C. Weiner

Fan theory: Laura Dern was holding the camera

I.C. Weiner

I'm a trust and estate litigation attorney, but I have long felt that there should be a 100% estate tax on anything over $100k. That will never pass, however, I'm incredibly receptive to Eric's suggested legislation of modifying slayer statutes of preventing a killer from inheriting from their victim to automatically becoming the sole beneficiary

Chris

Want to take this opportunity to plug the EXCELLENT book Last Action Heroes by Nick de Semlyen, which somehow manages to make Seagal look like an even bigger asshole. The section covering this movie is great, and you'll be shocked to learn that the sweat lodge scene originally cast only wizened crones and Seagal demanded they add some hot naked babes.

Rose Esposito

Thinking about the mailbag with the Seagal-obsessed, tassel jacket-wearing dad who attacked a teen Blockbuster clerk who accused them of losing this movie on VHS (which they had). 💖 I hope Nima still listens to the pod!!

Darryl Bowen

Bruce Dern saying he doesn't have many friends these days made me sad.....I'll be your friend Bruce Dern. We can play any game you want except Monopoly

Leighton Pritchard

I worked on a refinery for a year, about thirty years ago. I still have my boiler suit and two-piece overalls - both were embroidered with my name. I asked why they were personalised and was told it was to make identification of bodies easier in case it was necessary. Still have the fluorescent jacket too - it lives in the car. We did have a couple of fire/explosion incidents while I was there, but happily no deaths.

Chris Preston

John c McGinley is great. He has been vocal about not liking his performance or Steven Segal in this. He is great in the show Stan Against Evil. Lots of fun. 3 short seasons

Jaime Lee Ezell

Bruce Dern just made my week, excellent cameo!!!

Tim O'

I thought Bruce Dern was dead until I heard his voice on this episode 😭

MarkNM

George Spahn busting your balls is a great use of the slush fund. I'm sure he used the proceeds to buy some smuckin' weed.

Rose Esposito

"I spell it with a 'ph,' by the way." "What, rape?" The way I literally froze in horror at my desk 💀💀💀💀

Derek Baxter

“They’re like water balloons, those people.” Andrew on senior citizens. 😂

Dawn Elicia

Yes please please do a Chuck Norris month. Love the Bruce Dern Cameo.

Jonathan Lyons

It is hard to top Joey's cameo. Perfection amount of awareness and apathy. Balance Thanos would respect, really. I think you guys should rotate the GM. I'd love to see what demented questions Andrew and Eric can think up.

Odin Blaine

Love the cameo from adorable old man Dern, had fun with this movie too. Lots of fun kills and the explosions! So many! And Seagal, the acting! Wow! Really…..uhh not great. Not at all.

Deitrich Tennin

After listening to this, I realized that every main Steven Segal villain is sexually excited to be killed by Segal's character - especially Everett McGill's character in Under Siege 2🤣😭

Sonya Ballantyne

As an Indigenous person, I was cackling at the "HE CALLED HIM A FOOTBALL TEAM"

Craig

This encouraged me to go back and re-read Nathan Rabin’s amazing review of Seagal’s “novel” The Way of the Shadow Wolves: The Deep State and the Hijacking of America. Fun fact: I was introduced to WHM after Eric guested on Rabin’s podcast.

Donovan Stole

"Ow! My walnuts!" Lol...I was crying laughing the whole time.

Stewart Moncure

You could have had two hours of static after that Dern reveal and it still would be a great episode.

Vicky I

I love Andrew's Dom DeLuise laugh every time Chris does his Seagal impression
