“There’s so much door play in this movie!” - Chris

On this week’s episode, we’re dipping into horror territory to revisit the film that got the haunted ball rolling, The Conjuring! Before all the nuns and eerie doll spin-offs, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga hit the screen with this solid entry in the possession genre that features a fun amount of hair dye, cool sideburns, Lili Taylor being thrown around a basement by a ghost, a killer title scroll, one too many jump scares, a reference to The Changeling, and much more! PLUS: We gotta start hiring dogs to sniff out ghosts before purchasing real estate!

The Conjuring stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver, John Brotherton, Sterling Jerins, and Shannon Kook as Drew; directed by James Wan.

Doesn't the Japanese suite of armor come to life in Annabelle Comes Home?

Busiris

Genuinely entertained by WHM haunted house stories! It's the Spooktacular prelude I needed right now in mid-Sept. Eric is either living his own Paranormal Activity while filming the house at night or if any ghost tells him to GET OUT then maybe it's an Amityville situation.

Odin Blaine

Stay safe Eric pretty sure you live in a haunted house, hope your cats are ok

Eren Keskin

"Hey, my wife and I saw you across the bar, we really like your demonic vibe. Can we buy you a drink?" - Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga probably

Eren Keskin

Btw, did anyone else notice Ryan Gosling's band in the soundtrack? That man can do no wrong.

Jason

Really looking forward to The Conjuring: Fart Night.

RYAN RUBIN

Gonna pretend Spooktacular started a few weeks early

TJ Gaines

When the Spooktacular Theme hits… it’s like heroin.

Rose Esposito

Haven't listened to the ep yet, but I assume this is about Drew very obviously being their third 😏

I.C. Weiner

I recently rewatched/watched the entirety of the Conjuring films. To answer Eric's question, there are like 3 different origins to Annabelle the movies give. In the end it is a demon physically manipulating the doll, which I think is a funny visual

MarkNM

I totally keep these two beautiful and believable onscreen ghost hunters separate from the duplicitous IRL ghouls.

ScubaGoodingJr

Great episode. I was fully expecting a Warren Commission joke from Eric

Paul

Rest in Peace - Robert Redford.

Tala Hobballah

Their fictional chemistry >>>>ok food>>>> dog doo >>>>> those real con artists

Moe Tilden

Am I the only one who thinks Insidious is a lame ass movie? I liked The Conjuring movies and the Annabelle one I saw. But in Insidious, when we see where the scary-at-first red guy works??? And his office is on the set of a Tom Waits video? Its... a silly movie imo.

MarkNM

Come fart with us, Ed. Forevah and evah and evah.

Matt

Darth Maul giving himself a manicure while a Tiny Tim song blares is HYSTERICAL and I will not hear otherwise

James C Harris

Ok, thanks to you mooks, my mind's eye has now envisioned Ray Romano engaged in analingus

Courtney ❤

Spooktacular theme song makes me so happy 😊

Voror

I need to see The Changeling. I like haunted house movies and always heard good things about that one. Good episode as always! I saw this and the second in theaters and it was indeed fun with a crowd. I do think there are some really fun little moments throughout like all the clapping (the one on the stairs is great but I love the unsettling one of the cabinet opening and you just see this pair of hands come out). Ghost sheet is also great though I can see Chris' point at least on the part where you then see someone in the window. I might like 2 more than this but it goes back and forth. The whole Crooked Man bit is a tad much but the nun and other moments are really well constructed. I hope the gang does Conjuring 2 at some point. I wasn't expecting to hear spooky cat stories from Eric. Nice to have a little spook before the full on spooktacular.

Lar

I realize whoever owns the rights to Raggedy Ann didn’t want to taint it or whatever but people have been buying dolls of her specifically because the “real” Annabelle is one. They should lean into it, obviously.

Lar

It’s goofy but I think it’s supposed to be. Seems fairly obvious to me that that part in the Further was very inspired by Beetlejuice. To me that was the best part of the film.

I.C. Weiner

Sorry for doubling comments but I have to disagree on The Presence. I also watched it on a plane and it ended right when they were doing beverage service and was ugly crying from the ending

Lar

Weren’t they going to make a crooked man movie? I would have preferred that over a second Nun movie, tbh.

Voror

That does sound familiar now that you mention it, but I have to think that never materialized.

Rose Esposito

I still get the two franchises mixed up sometimes tbh

Moe Tilden

Haha hey, it is hysterical, agreed.

Allen M

Give me demons over bedbugs any day

Jamie

Sorry, but Conjuring is a better series than Insidious. None of those Insidious sequels are worth a damn. At least Conjuring 2 is solid.

Jamie

Also if you want a spooky samurai movie, check out last Year's Exhuma

Arthur martinez

That my amityville was so stupid when the lady goes to find the buried coin in the bushes lol

Woofenstein

Twerking to the Spooktacular theme

Shawn

Eric thinks he has a ghost problem but has a considered he has a Gary Busey problem? You know, a Hider in the House sitchiation?

Ray

The ghost of Bethesda

Craig

Presumably if the film was set a few decades later the POV sequence would have been shot in NIGHT VISION.

Nicholas Knecht

"The walls keep whispering 'People Chicken' ... it's making me hungry " Eric

Nicholas Knecht

Important thing to remember about The Exorcist, the exorcism didn't work. It was only the sacrifice of the priest by taking the demon into himself and then committing suicide that ended the possession.

Alfred E Human

Insidious is just Baby’s First Poltergeist

Tim O'

We all go a little thicc sometime

Tim O'

The Changeling is very good. It weirdly has George C. Scott but not very much yelling. It's kind of a quiet, slow, sad horror movie. I think it's also quite a snowy movie, so it's also a good watch for cold weather.

Tim O'

Gonna have to borrow Lin Shaye from the Insidious franchise to defeat that kind of evil

Jonathan Lyons

Did cabin at least like the clapping? I know he is familiar with the clap with a different context, but he hates this movie like his forefathers dictated he must

We Hate Movies

I dig Insidious part 3 as it's a completely different riff and it's just Lynn Shaye and her ghostbusters. 2 sorta lost me with the ghost dimension stuff, I guess, but then I also kinda liked part 4, Insidious Goes to College? Conjuring 2 is solid. I rewatched 3 and it... ain't great. Hoping to catch 4 this weekend! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I tried cramming one in, but I just couldn't get there. Damn. - Andrew

Devin Smith

I believe the Haunted Samurai Armor film you guys mentioned is Bloodbeat (1983), filmed just down the road from where I live!

Devin Smith

Shoot, should have waited until the end of the episode before commenting! My bad! 😆

Jan

Glorious eps about an ok horror movie. The last one is great but the third is my favorite, wishing you guys did all the conjuring movies

ScubaGoodingJr

Hehe, A for effort. Looking forward to you guys returning to the Great White North.

Jacob

I had a chronic issue with birds offing themselves in droves, via eating shit into my windowed dining room, when I first moved into my house. Simple fix, put a fucking sticker on your window. They make fancy ones. Puts a stop to it immediately. As you were. Love the show.

Cody

Eric was onto something with the Roman soldier ghosts in England. I visited York this summer and found out that there's a local legend about a specific building where someone saw a Roman legion marching through the basement. They were buried up to their waists because something something the ground level has gone up so that most of the Roman ruins are underground.

Dan sulin

I saved this one for the start of Spooky season. One thing worth mentioning about the Warrens is that like many religious grifters they have also been accused of benign abusive sex pests as well.
