“Wearing a Yankees cap in a Stephen King story, you know this kid’s toast!” - Steve

On this week’s episode, we’re kicking off our 2025 Halloween season with a wild episode discussing the Stephen King adaptation, Needful Things! How amazing is J.T. Walsh in this film? Would you buy something from this old shopkeep? Does Ed Harris defeat the Devil just by yelling? How is that kid hucking apples through a microwave door? And, now THAT is how you blow something up in a movie, folks! PLUS: Turns out Leland Gaunt loves the Spice Girls!

Needful Things stars Max von Sydow, Ed Harris, Bonnie Bedelia, Amanda Plummer, Ray McKinnon, Duncan Fraser, Valri Bromfield, Shane Thomas Meier, Don S. Davis, and the late, great J.T. Walsh as Dan Keeton; directed by Fraser C. Heston.

Didn’t know this movie existed. Exact same thing with Cape Feare in the Simpsons where I saw the Rick and Morty devil episode first. Pretty good??

David

I have a real soft spot for this movie. Ed Harris should have played the lead role in more films.

jribs

For all the talk of edgy comedians in Austin, the Gang did a bit about the kid getting sexually molested without batting an eye or patting themselves on the back for “pushing boundaries”. Also good lord!

Busiris

What a coincidence! Earlier today I visited a shop run by a guy that looked a lot like Max von Sydow and he knew the one thing I needed more than anything - a return of the WHM Spooktacular. And wow, here it is! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to sneak into my neighbor's house and stick citations all over his walls accusing him of embezzlement and cornholing his own mother.

Ed Harris

Saw this in a second run theater back in 1993. A great reason why my list of the best King adaptations is very different from my list of favorites of his.

Tony King

I hadn't seen this before but had read the book. The movie overall was just ok, but that explosion at the end was great! I did think while watching that, no one blows things up like we used to.

Jason

I totally forgot Max von Sydow was an OG “Prank Bro” in this. I now picture von Sydow doing IRL livestreams being a horrible nuisance and just saying “Why cahn’t you tah-ke a prahkn broh?”

Billie Jackson

Malice has the most on brand Alec Baldwin quote of all time: his "I'm board certified in cardiothoracic medicine. You ask me if I have a God complex? I am God" speech.

Winson Paine

Ray McKinnon was the preacher in the first season of Deadwood in a fuckin soul crushing performance

johnny stocker

JT Walsh going completely shitwire is always a good time.

MarkNM

Coin Slot Heston?

MarkNM

All Time Trailer Line.

Winson Paine

The novel is worth a look, by way of example in the book neither preacher is involved with Gaunt at all and several of the pranks have an escalation which culminated in a hilarious congregation on congregation no holds barred battle royale and it is both brutal and funny as shit, huge rec for the clickity clack

Aaron Dowler

Ted Williams, the logical Red Sox equivalent to Mickey Mantle, was right there! Why could they not think of Teddy Ballgame?!

Sonya Ballantyne

Hey, Erik! The first Dark Tower book sucks but I really liked the later ones. Wizard and Glass and Wind Through the Keyhole were pretty good.

Aaron Dowler

big ups to Chris for that Fall New Big Prinz reference, deep cut!

Gone

I’d go with at least a light recommend for this, personally. If you’re into pact devil stories, this will scratch that itch better than most movies that use that trope. It’s this, some twilight Zone episodes, and that show “The Booth At the End.”

MarkNM

Ted Williams bought a cryofreezer from Leland Gaunt.

MarkNM

We Hate Movies, the podcast that finally made me unashamed for knowing all those songs.

Billie Jackson

Lochlyn Monroe was Betty's father and one of the many serial killers on Riverdale. Luke Perry was the rare non evil parent on that show.

Barista Bran

Lochlyn Munro is in both seasons of Peacemaker

James C Harris

I can listen to you 4 do Max Von Sydow impersonation all day!

Rose Esposito

lol Aaron Sorkin LOVES to have characters list their credentials

Nicholas Knecht

My first DT book was The Wastelands. I was staying the weekend at some friends, playing D&D, and it was the next morning. Everyone was still asleep and I didn't want to bother anyone, phones weren't really a thing then, and TV wasn't an option. I found The Wastelands paperback on a table, and I was like I should read more Steven King. The first chapters with the giant robot bear had me, I was both like What The Actual Fuck and More Please. I had over half the book read before Everyone woke up. The lady of the house told me the book was the the third in a series. I immediately went to find the rest after that day. The gunslinger was an absolute slog... I had a hard time finishing it. But The Drawing of Three, pure reading crack baby. Reread the Wastelands and then ... I waited. And waited. And waited. When King finally released Wizard and Glass I was first in line. And... he lost me. I didn't really want Rolands backstory, didn't care. I wanted the actual story. And when more books came out, I didn't go back. I need to give the whole series another shot. But for me the second and third book, absolute peek.

Watch_N_Rewatch

Was that Jupin belting Spice Girls in perfect Sydow impression?! That was not on my bingo card for Spooktacular season 😂 Great episode boys, I'll be watching this movie for the first time tonight, cheers 🍻 P.s. Has anyone seen Life of Chuck? Another Stephen King adaptation, I love Mike Flanagan's movies and fall of the house of usher is so damn good

Voror

Yeah I want to say the first is largely considered the weakest? I always thought Drawing of the Three was a big step up.

Tony King

I'm a massive Dark Tower head, and while The Gunslinger is a bit of a slog, I still mostly like it, and the rest of the series is excellent. I highly recommend listening to the audiobooks.

John Zurkuhlen

Did anyone keep seeing Powers Boothe when Max came on screen? I think it was probably just the mustache, but would have been another fun choice for the devil.

Jack

in the book it's Sandy Koufax

Winson Paine

I liked the old pre revision version, it was so stark and bleak and spare. New one is fine but I think it suffered from being the start of a series rather than a thing in ad of itself

Rose Esposito

Incredible Spice Girls material, no notes. 😂 But I was sure we were gonna get a "I'm the new pitcher!! 🎶 goodness gracious, great balls of fire! 🎶", presumably from Steve. But he mentioned the movie, so OK.

Tim O'

That's what Charlton called his wife, I think

Jonathan Lyons

It Inspired me to come up with a ssecret spice girl called betrayal spice. We don't talk about it.

Jonathan Lyons

Isn't that with the loki fellow? Did you like it? I love the book.

Watch_N_Rewatch

I've actually added it to the wishlist to watch but still haven't seen it, I didn't hear any reviews at all tho and thought that was odd

Darcy MacDonald

The Castle Rock series is actually somewhat decent, especially the second season. They basically Noah-Hawley-Fargo-up the King Maineverse and as I recall Salem's Lot has a pretty important role in one of the seasons. Great take on Misery, kind of a prequel, in the second season.

Darcy MacDonald

Oh, if I recall (at least from the book) doo-wop jacket dude is Ace Merrill - the character played by Kiefer in Stand By Me.

Todd B

I read this back in high school, so I will cop to hazy memory here, but I feel like the weird reference to Jakarta in 2053 was a movie only thing. Further adding to the "The Hell was that about?" Also, I spent too much of this episode wondering if this would lead to the return of the sexy prank discourse.

WarOfTheBees

For some weird reason I always thought this was a made for TV movie

Geoff Gershon

I never knew that what I really wanted from this gang was Max Von Sydow singing the Spice Girls at 53:51 - Bravo! 🙂

Derek Bundy

Max van Sydow reviewing the Genesis discography had me rolling. FWIW, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway IS excellent. Although if you're going down that rabbit hole, we need a van Sydow Reaction to "Supper's Ready" from Foxtrot, obviously. Would be about as long as the TV cut of Needful Things and frankly? Better movie.

TJ Gaines

My sister has lived in Maine for years and has a crazy Stephen King story. One time she was in town at the local store. He walked in and only bought a whole raw chicken, and 2 packs of the old style safety razor blades. The clerk asked him if he was working a new novel. To which he replied “Maybe???”

TJ Gaines

And the resort she worked at was on his private lake.

Mark D Myers

Kid shoots himself scarlet from gi joe the movie "he's gone in to a coma."

Matthew Lloyd

Lochlyn Munroe played a dad in Riverdale and he's also recently been in Peacemaker.

Matt

I want you to know that at least one person really appreciates this joke

John Cataldo

Best VHS trailer game ever!!! I was laughing so hard

Jamie

I lol'd at the Amy Madigan Oscar talk and then remembered Demi Moore. Hmmm.

Jamie

Still need to see the movie, but the audiobook for Needful Things is awful. It's narrated by King, who's fine, but uses this terrible incidental music, including a really corny ass Elvis riff that's clearly played on a Casio.

Craig

“Great turkey acting in this movie” was probably the first time that sentence has ever been uttered in human history.

James Bergquist

*Van Halen riff* Cucking with the devvviiillllll WHA HAAAA WAAAHHHAAAA OW!! YEAH EEE YYYYEEEEAAAHHH

MarkNM

It totally looks like one. If you cut this for pan and scan it would be indistinguishable from it or the stand

Ed Harris

This might be the most mediocre movie I still love. As noted, its a decent hangover movie.

Setzer Studio Arts

Andrew being able to sing Spice Girls on command was not what I was expecting from this episode

RJ Cunningham

Ed Harris is such a good fucking actor, like the equivalent of like a 12 time all-star, never won the MVP but was top 5 in voting 5-6 times. Not a “GOAT” actor but next tier down. In terms of angry guy actor…most certainly a GOAT in that category.
