On this Halloween-time edition of our Lifetime Movie re-cap show, we're chatting about a Lifetime-style made-for-TV horror movie that won't haunt your nightmares, The Haunted from 1991!

How amazing is Jeffrey DeMunn's mustache in this movie? Why can't these neighbors mind their own business? Is that grandmother really going to have her heart explode if she goes for a long-ish car ride? And, considering their string of successful horror movies, how funny is it that Ed and Lorraine Warren are basically side characters in this scary tale? PLUS: A brief discussion of another haunted legend, the college campus Poster Guy!

The Haunted stars Sally Kirkland, Jeffrey DeMunn, Louise Latham, George D. Wallace, Joyce Van Patten, William O'Connell, and Stephen Markle & Diane Baker as Ed & Lorraine Warren; directed by Robert Mandel.

We hope you are enjoying Once In A Lifetime, our bi-monthly (every-other month) WHM podcast where we watch some outrageous Lifetime (and Lifetime-adjacent) movies and attempts to sift through the madness within! Thanks so much for supporting We Hate Movies on Patreon! We know you have a lot of podcast-related listening options and we're grateful you chose to spend some time with us. I remember as a kid still spooked by scary movies, being a bit scary.

WarOfTheBees

This was totally a TV movie I'd see a commercial for during like ALF or something and it would scare the ever loving shit out of me

ediblegenius

Dude, I'm so glad you guys are doing this movie. This freaked me out as a kid, especially the scene where the neighbors are staring at the house and there's just a bunch of shadows going on through the windows of people screaming

Melanie St.George

Me too! This movie has stuck with me since I was a kid. This episode is going to be great 😆

I’m a bit older then you folks but in my college days we didn’t have a “poster guy” but there was a “legit” company that showed up the first week of classes and set up a poster shop for a week or two. I went away to school the fall of 1999 so you can guess the most popular poster https://ebay.us/m/avZaRj

DMAC

That scene was so metal and yeah it was freaky as fuck.

MarkNM

Shoulda got up for that final snack...

Matt

We had that outfit when I was in college too! And yes, I DID purchase a Reservoir Dogs poster.

Jen L Greene

During my college days, I don’t remember a poster guy but we did have a CD guy who would set up shop once or twice a year in our student union.

Lauren James

I don't know why I try to listen to these at work. I attracted a lot of attention when I suddenly burst out laughing at "Cath--Epis--Meth..."

When The Last Rites came out I started to frequent The Conjuring subreddit and I found one thread detailing the "real" version of the Smurl haunting and they noted the Warrens couldn't help so they brought in a prayer circle "which is like calling in the calvary." I can't stop laughing at this since reading it

There's poster guy, cd guy, guitar guy. The guy that insists on freestyling even when you say "no no no, that's ok" and he says "no, no, I insist, two things you have to explain and demonstrate to black people: jazz and rap." And you say that's inaccurate and he calls you racist and then talks about how his mixtape is gonna change the world. Oh and mixtape guy. Magical time, college is

William K. Wolfrum

It's crazy that at about 23 minutes you predicted Jordan Peterson's situation.

Busiris

Such a good episode, really good for pointing out how hilarious the movie actually is (granted, I didn't see it as a kid and maybe then it would be scary to me). I had to check the credits for the first Amityville Horror movie, I could've sworn they had some sort of consulting credit, but I checked and I didn't catch any mention. Would've been cool if someone played James Brolin in a Conjuring movie where the Warrens take a trip to Hollywood.

Jason

I was struck by that too!

Jason

I bought a Quadrophenia poster from my poster guy. I thought I was the height of sophistication.

TJ Guiney

we didn't have a poster guy at my school but we did have The Great Poster Sale the second week of classes where I of course got a Fear and Loathing poster that followed me through college (and The Seasons by Alfons Mucha that followed me for a while longer. still love that painting)

Brandon

I used to work next to the Smurl house. Jack Smurl suffered a head injury at work and hallucinated every thing, including being sexually assaulted by a ghost. Ironically, West Pittston, located on the Susquehanna river in Northeast Pennsylvania, flooded a few years ago.

Kay Lynch

The Rage: Carrie 2 - dude got fired off that film. Katt Shea was cleanup crew. She did Poison Ivy, Stripped To Kill and Streets which I think you guys might dig.

Kay Lynch

Oop never mind, you got there. 😅

Eren Keskin

None of the neighbors believed them. They thought it was "a lot of malarkey," to quote one neighbor. Even the parish priest of the area, Joseph Adoso, did not believe them. CSICOP (Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal) spoke to the former resident of the house who lived there for 17 years, and they said nothing strange ever happened there, and they doubted Smurl's claims. Smurls denied CSICOP entry and called the cops on them.

IvySays

We had that too. I bought a Beatles poster that I hung up without removing the packaging so it wouldn't get ruined. I also didn't put my bumper stickers on my car, I taped them to the inside of my rear windshield. So they wouldn't get ruined. 🫠

I will always give Jeff DeMunn this, for good or for ill - he is the only reason I finished the book Dreamcatcher. (Was an audio book version. The book itself is still the worst Stephen King I've crossed paths with, but Goddamn, DeMunn has the perfect voice for that man's prose.)

Todd B

And as people are sharing tales of the Poster Guy, weirdly I only ever saw him once at my school during freshman year. Bought a poster for The Exorcist from him and then he was off like a fart in the wind, never to be seen again.

Kate

I’m just here to appreciate the reference to Duckman! You should do that on AD…

We had the Apple TV remote for the one in the bedroom disappear one day, so ended up having to use the one for the Apple TV in the living room which we used to have a Logitech Harmony remote for so never used it out anyway. Then that remote also disappeared and had to switch to using the last Apple TV remote for the old one in the office, and that one we had to control with the phone app. Years later when we were getting rid of the bed one of the remotes showed up dead center under the bed, but never ended up finding the other one. We've since sold the house and moved, and in the process of cleaning out everything in the bedroom never found the missing remote, just got swallowed up and disappeared. We now just use the LG remote for the main TV in the living room, but the Apple TV remote still has a habit of getting lost in the bedroom.

Jessie Drew

I watched the movie for the show 🙈

Matthew Lloyd

They dont charge for their "services" but they make a shit load from the books they "write". The last podcast on the left have done a few episode's on the various hauntings they've attended.

Jan

I love the Smurfs

Henry Chavez

I saw this movie when it premiered in 1991 and believe or not this movie still scares me to this day more than any modern horror movie made now. PS it’s still better than The Conjuring Last Rites by a country mile!
