We're getting into We ❤️ Movies Month here on The Nexus as well, that's right, it's time for us to (finally) take a look at the masterful Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country!

When you really get down to it, putting the legendary villain of Khan aside, there's a real argument to be made that THIS is the best of all Star Trek films. How incredible is this cold open with Captain Sulu? Did they drop the storyline of Scotty and Uhura sleeping together from the last movie? How great is it seeing Shatner fight himself in the prison break scene? Did Christopher Plummer's character ever read anyone other than Shakespeare? And we can all agree that the signatures at the end are great? PLUS: A history of the importance of various Dee Vee Dee extras!

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Kim Cattrall, Mark Lenard, Grace Lee Whitney, Bock Peters, Kurtwood Smith, David Warner, Christopher Plummer, and Michael Dorn as Colonel Worf; directed by Nicholas Meyer.

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Matthew Mariner

This is my favorite ST movie, has been as a kid, and I love that you guys are tackling it.

Adam Ray

General Cheng top 5 movie villains of all time.

Happy Panda One

This is the movie that made me a Trek fan, delighted as hell you guys are covering it.

Tim O'

My favorite Star Trek movie, finally 🥹

Craig

Just rewatched in preparation for this and it reconfirmed my belief that it’s the best of the bunch. I only discovered this year, when reading the book to my kids, that the great final line (before the final frontier speech) comes from Peter Pan.

Eren Keskin

You have not experienced WHM until you have heard them in the original Klingon.

Eren Keskin

Love the way Shatner says "fire."

TJ Gaines

Wasn’t season 2 of the Simpsons DVD that had the annoying as hell start up?

TJ Gaines

I hated this as a kid when I first saw it. Granted, I was a dumb 5, 6 year old and knew nothing of politics. Now I love it!

Paul

Kirk to Kirk: I can’t believe I kissed you. Kirk: Must’ve been your lifelong ambition. 😆

Kevin Lynch

My favorite quote of the entire Star Trek franchise: Chang (pretentiously quoting Shakespeare): I am constant as the Northern Star McCoy: I’d give real money if he’d shut up

Geoff Gershon

And here I was thinking that you guys had already reviewed this - it's an absolute blast, Plummer is a highlight!

MarkNM

I have nitpicks (since retracted due to cloud yelling) with the movie, but it's a good time. And the episode made me laugh my ass off.

Amanda P

I need this art on a shirt!

Paul

Bar-none — The Nexus is my favorite WHM show.

MarkNM

I think what was way more annoying than the menus, were the seasons that came in the shitty plastic heads. When I saw how horrible the Homer head looked on the shelf, that's pretty much when I gave up on buying the seasons.

Jules of Denial

Cabin as Valeris looks like if George Lopez played Vera in Superman III

Jan

Never seen and who knows… oh my

Busiris

Felipe's art for this one is an all timer delight, haha.

Eric Gerbeck

That DVD(!!!) special feature rant is an all timer y'all. I dunno how much time I wasted getting stoned and watching special features. I mean, I rented the movie and watched it. I have to get my money's worth listening to people who made the movie talking about making the movie.

Jeremy Thomas

Um actually, Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in "All the money in world" (a gay Ridley Scott movie) not "beginners." (Pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose)... I only mentioned this is because the guys also mentioned Ridley Scott, so coincidence I guess.

Rose Esposito

omg yes the return of the Amber Alert bit 🩷

Craig

This movie strikes a great balance between goofy Shatner and serious Shatner (his rants about the Klingons and David’s death)

Craig

I’m glad Andrew explained the other cut that ran on TV, which I must have recorded and watched a lot. Rewatching last week I could remember that line about Kirk and McCoy saving the galaxy by standing trial. Thought I was going crazy when the president didn’t say it!

Ben Sharpe

Cartwright! Cartwright! Love your Star Trek episodes as always. Now you guys have to do the Voyager episode Flashback where we see some of the events from this movie from Tuvok's point of view. (member of Sulu's crew)

Chris Harriss

This movie is great, but has a giant film sin not touched on: the torpedo/tailpipe thing. Act 1 we hear *Excelsior* -- not Enterprise -- have the gaseous anomaly equipment. When Uhura says it re Enterprise, we all nod along. Watch again. IMDB trivia corroborated this: "According to George Takei in his autobiography, in earlier drafts of the script, it was Captain Sulu and the Excelsior crew who discover the Klingon Bird-of-Prey's weakness and use their gaseous anomaly equipment to find this. But William Shatner objected, because he felt that Captain Kirk would not need another Captain's help, and the scene was rewritten."

JG Park

When I saw this in the theater, I remember whispering to my friend during the federation president’s speech, “I’ve crossed oceans of time to be with you.” Decades later, I’m glad to hear someone else thought of Gary Oldman’s shades in Dracula during that scene.

Grayson Goode

I need all of the Star Trek art on shirts!!!

Mike Mullan

Awesome podcast. Only Complaint is you didn’t talk about the stock photo headshot of David that Kirk has. I was laughing out loud every time he held up that random Star Trek 3 photo of David

Tim Batson

What a great episode of the Nexus! II and IV are always in perpetual contention for best cinema Star Trek.

J HEASLEY

Crazy! My dad also worked for IBM. He went to Russia in the 70s. He said he was followed everywhere. And tue bugged his phone. And took his camera before he left.

RJ Cunningham

I so enjoy the signature ending. First time viewing this and goddamn, looks fantastic and is so fast-moving especially for a political intrigue movie. This is my favorite Star Trek movie now

RJ Cunningham

And the cut back to Bones taking in all the arthritis-laughter is so long, to show the immense satisfaction he’s feeling elicits a thunderous laugh from me

Billie Jackson

Koenig's best performance is probably as the evil government psychic in Babylon 5, but nobody's watching that. Spock takes over as captain of the Enterprise shortly after ST6, though there are still one or two books slotted in with Kirk during the immediate post film voyage. Odo returns to the Dominion after the ds9 series but sends a Jem Hadar to protect Kira and later appears a few times, at least one of them being after the station is destroyed and Kira has left to essentially become a Bajoran nun. The new station is much larger, but during the construction period ds9 is based on the planet. Which was the original location for the show prior to the station idea being chosen. Saavik was supposed to be pregnant at the start of ST4, which is why she stayed behind on Vulcan.

Billie Jackson

If only it was from Death Spa, in which Merritt Buttrick is possessed by the ghost of his sister (following her self immolation) to enact revenge via murderous health club supercomputer.

Billie Jackson

For some reason I was absolutely certain that Beginners was that 1980s Peter Gallagher, Daryl Hannah Greece set threesome movie Summer Lovers. Not sure why.
