On this month’s patrons-only We ❤️ Movies episode, we’re heading back to beautiful Pandora to check in on Jake Sully and his ever-growing brood in Avatar: The Way of Water! How absolutely gorgeous is this movie? Can we can it with the “Family Language Track” offerings, Disney? How hilarious is it when Quaritch finds his old skeleton? Has anyone ever done it better than Sigourney? And can someone please give that Spider a haircut—looking like Jack Black in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is… not fantastic. PLUS: Look out for the cool Na’vi in part four—The Mud Goblins!

Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Jack Champion as Spider; directed by James Cameron.

I'm shocked this movie was picked as a 'Love Movies' episode. I watched the original one only once and laughed at the idea of this being a franchise. Should i reevaluate these movies??

Melissa Benjamin

My husband loves these movies. I find them so hard to get through, but this one is definitely better than the first.

Tony King

I'm in the same boat, having never really liked them much. Visually they are stunning, but I don't care about the story or characters. This one is better than the first one though.

Enrico Palazzo

My first thought after seeing it on opening night was this is what happens if you feed all of JC’s previous films into ChatGPT and ask it to make a film.

Paul

No, I will not be watching “Avatar: Fire and Ass”. I ain’t got time for that flick. I really don’t. Look, I got to see these better movies first: “Fakham Hall” “Train Dreams” “Hamnet” “Marty Supreme” “No Other Choice” I don’t have time to sit for three and a half hours in a movie theater watching a so-so Avatar flick!

Jan

Just two more avatars. Btw i have seen Sabotage more times and i love you guys talking about Avatar - Sam Worthington pledging to Cameron about another fck Avatar because the stench of urine on the set of Sabotage is killing him

Jan

No. Feed your anger & h8, come to the dark side, avatar is sinking like the titanic to the abyss of final fantasy (2001)

Jan

Visually it’s all fake. And the blue creatures are too tall & have great expressions in their faces. Nope, i’m done.

Chris

I could have watched Payakan wrecking space poachers for a full extra hour

Chris

Excited for another round of "does anybody actually like these incredibly popular movies" discourse this winter

Adam Ray

I think everyone with that filmed got stained with more than just urine. That movie is a crime against humanity.

Frank Grimes

James Cameron’s ultimate goal is to both kill an entire film crew and start a new life under the sea.

Matt

Literally listening to a 2hr podcast about a movie I haven't seen (and tbh not super interested in) and loving it. You guys could record Eric reading the Olive Garden menu and make it entertaining as hell.

Busiris

I can confirm you see a teeny bit of Earth in the first movie if you watch the extended edition on the Blu-ray with the multiple cuts on it. Sorry to the folks that think this should be a WHM, it's a fun popcorn movie. Not every WLM has to be Goodfellas or Rear Window.

MarkNM

The best water effects since Wave Race 64!

Em Smith

Like this comment if "it's called a punch, FISH" made u laugh out loud

Matt

At the time I was CONVINCED we would never see better graphics in anything, ever!

Frank Grimes

I thought it was “Married 5 Times? Yikes!”

John Halski

I really wish I was seeing the movies that the fans of this films see. I’ll probably be hated forever by everyone here for saying this but… this franchise is the one time I can say, without hesitation, that the fan theories make everything about these movies better and Cameron would do himself a favor checking those out before making parts 4-40.

John Halski

I’ve come to peace with the films being the equivalent of pro wrestling. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Not my jam beyond the thrill of seeing bodies slam and crowds cheer. And that’s totally cool, not a dig, but when the franchise thinks it’s rivaling TERMINATOR or ALIENS for storytelling and character, I just nod and smile and back away.

Adam Lewis

Quaritch (Stephen Lang) used to work out at my gym. I never bothered him but always wanted to compliment him on various roles.

Darryl Bowen

Seeing it in the theaters all I could think was Disney making some Avatar themed beach resort or water park which I haven't heard anything about as of yet. I do want to check out Disney's Animal Kingdom park that has an Avatar section

Robert

I have no strong opinions about Avatar, but I was hoping for the Holdovers for holiday WLM and hear the glorious Giamatti impressions

Tyler The Destroyer

Gentlemen: it might happen, for the first time I might listen to an episode without re-watching the movie I just don’t care so much lol

Jason

I lean more to Steve over Cabin in relation to the Avatar movies, but that section of the parks is pretty darn neat. Plus has one of the better non reservation food places.

Samuel McGuire

So Eric not only thinks he’s going to heaven, but they’re going to throw a cloud-warming party for him?

Matthew Lloyd

I hope the blood guy Ted Faro's (Horizon: Forbidden west) himself.

Hard To Gwil

Is this the most divisive WLM episode yet?

profondo robbo

Rewatching this did spur me to rewatch Titanic for the first time in forever and make me realise that it also has a similar issue where the characters keep going back and forth into the sinking boat (though I guess it's slightly more justified in that watching the boat sink is the whole point).

I.C. Weiner

I'm wholly unfamiliar with any fan theory. Would you mind sharing your favorites?

I.C. Weiner

My opinion: the first one is bad and a terrible franchise starter as their only real option is to repeat story beats. The second one is much better with a more contained story, but does repeat a lot of the main beats from 1.

I.C. Weiner

I have a vague recollection of Edie Falco doing an interview at the time of release for this memory and it was clear she had no idea what movie(s) she was in and it didn't generate a fraction of the response to Gwyneth Paltrow admitting to the same on the Marvel movies.

Joseph Xavier

Ball chompers .... Defo felt a bit unwell listening to that bit
