“I had people in my life telling me this was a funny movie…” - Steve

On this week’s show, we’re getting into our month of holiday programming with a chat about the totally dated Christmas comedy, Just Friends! How annoying is it that this movie barely cares about being set at Christmas? Why couldn’t we get just a little more for the incredible Julie Hagerty to do in the movie? How abhorrent is the entire idea of the “Friend Zone” in the first place? Is this one of the biggest public humiliations at a movie’s house party? And why is Ryan Reynolds doing a Cartman voice when he’s in that abysmal fat suit the production borrowed from the Friends archive? PLUS: A Jared from Subway reference in this film that Chris accurately describes as “completely destabilizing”!

Just Friends stars Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Paris, Chris Klein, Christopher Rodriguez Marquette, Fred Ewanuick, Amy Matysio, and Julie Hagerty as Carol Brander; directed by Roger Kumble.

First-time watch and WOW, this was god-awful! Thanks to this podcast, I can now add this to WHM Shitty Holiday Movie pantheon alongside Deck the Halls, Christmas With The Kranks, and Fred Claus....and this is actually worse than any of those. 😆

Liz M

Can you guys please do The Family Stone next year? That movie is crazy 😂

Tanner Strode

Watched this yesterday morning for the pod then the same afternoon I watched 2023s Thanksgiving to find out the jock, Tim plays the Ex store manager in that movie. Very weird double feature highlighting that guy

Josh

It's well past time for the world at large to let go of Ryan Reynolds.

Eren Keskin

Am I the only one who keeps confusing Stephen Root with Michael Stuhlbarg?

Ronnie Gardocki

This is a movie that I've purposefully avoided solely due to the poster. Nothing about the poster screams "must watch!".

DMAC

Julie Hagerty as the mom once again steals every scene she is in. Same as Freddy Got Fingered.

David Thompson

Andrew -before its weird again The again killed me 😂

Adam Ray

That Harold and Kumar Christmas movie was fucking wretched. I say that as someone that also hated the sequel. That Christmas one was so much worse.

Adam Ray

As soon as I saw that horse shit second chin on Reynolds I said "Never watching that one! What's that called? Yeah horse shit." And I've stayed true to my grumpiness.

Billie Jackson

I did the same thing when the trailer for his most recent film came out. Kept thinkthing "Wow, Stephen Root looks great!" Only seeing the credit at the end and realizing it was Stuhlbarg. The beard was part of the confusion, I think.

johnny stocker

I don't even remember this being a thing. I think I must've seen that poster once and spent the last 20 years trying to block it out.

Dan sulin

Chris saying he didn’t know about Subway Sandwhich until 2009 blows my mind. Also made me go down a rabbit hole and find out that Mr Subs and Mister Submarine are different sandwhich shop chains in different states. If you are ever in the Chi-town area, Mister Submarine does have the best sandwhiches

MarkNM

I can tell at what points in my life I was single by checking when date bullets like this were released.

Matt

Anna Faris and Julie Hagerty DRAG this thing to the finish line. Every single other thing is offensive to at least 3 of the 5 senses.

Dan sulin

I think only the first one was any good and I say that as someone who hasn’t watched it in two decades so I’m pretty sure it hasn’t held up

Matt

This implies Chris didn't see Happy GIlmore until 2009! We have "Mr. Sub" up here, which is a Canadian chain. The sandwiches are better than Subway, but I'm not going out of my way for it

Adam Ray

Full honesty, it held up for me a little. I just watched it a couple weeks ago. Definitely not saying it aged well. But some scenes still gave me a chuckle.

Ed Harris

WHM + terrible mid aughts comedy = Fantastic.

Ronnie Gardocki

The percentage of good movies with fat suits in them has to be really low, right?

Elliott Tipton

Or Cone Heads. Even though the exact scene has been referenced on the show

Elliott Tipton

Good Charlotte is what happens when you put Blink-182 and Green Day in a particle accelerator.

We Hate Movies

Full disclosure, it was on the schedule before Diane Keaton passed away. We'll get to it next year because, yeah, it sucks. Saw it in theaters! - Andrew

jribs

You forgot about Out Cold (2001) and Super Troopers (2001)!

I.C. Weiner

My sister and her husband bought this on DVD for me one Christmas with a message yhat said, "take notes!" I have legitimately traced back my falling out with my sister to this movie

Frank Grimes

The only movies Amy Smart are in that I legitimately enjoy are Outside Providence and Road Trip. And even in Road Trip she’s not really acting. I’m not saying it speaks to her as an actor but more a terrible agent who said “Hey let Statham plow you in public for this shitty remake of DOA!

Albert C

The only thing I remember about this is Reynold’s stupid cartman voice and Chris Klein referring to his Prius as a “Japanese Princess” which definitely got a lone laugh from me in the theater.

Steven Avalos

Once again I gotta apologize as a Vancouverite for Ryan Reynolds yet again

Matthew Lloyd

So the day Santa died have it like green room and neo nazis are raging Christians, so not much of a stretch there.

Matthew Lloyd

Tim the fat security guard from X-men 2 and a load of Supernatural episodes and being DJ Qualls fiance.

Watch_N_Rewatch

This was a DVD watch over and over with the siblings so we quoted it constantly and brothers fighting thing was spot on 👌 Ryan Reynolds has become so annoying that it's only enjoyable to watch his character go through the ringer lol But this is so much better than Deck the Halls IMO ... Can't watch that movie all the way through

Lar

This movie, and the Sweetest Thing, and several similar movies (like keeping the faith, I think it was called??) were constantly on Comedy Central when I was in middle school. I watched them so much. Were they good? No. Did I enjoy them? Also no. But that was pre-streaming life I guess lololol

Lar

Oh yeah! Gosh they’re adorable. That show is so weirdly responsible for people getting married.

Lar

How did you not get in a fist fight right then and there???

Matthew Lloyd

Yeah, i was ridiculously happy when I found out, was like "oh my god how adorable".

Mark D Myers

God help me but somehow spirited has become the movie we watch every year on Christmas at my house.

Busiris

Oooh, I'll tell you what, that's at least ONE ticket sold for "The Thicker Man" and the modern day sequel "The Thicker Man 2: Santa Takes Manhattan".

The Rainman Shawn Kemp

I like this movie, it's hilarious. Anna Faris kills it. It's a dumb comedy, its not supposed to be When Harry Met Sally.

Z

My favourite thing about this awful movie is that it takes place in New Jersey, but was actually filmed in Regina, Saskatchewan, where the winter weather is *much* colder, and you can absolutely tell in the exterior scenes when Ryan Reynolds is trying his utmost best to look like he's not dying of hypothermia.

Christopher Oxentine

The Sweetest Thing is my Mom's favorite of the last 30 years.

Tim O'

I saw this with my high school's movie club. Was it worth the $5 for a ticket? I say no.

JK

She's actually pretty good in Outside Providence, underrated and a Stay Tuned in my dreams

Frank Grimes

I agree. She is good in Outside Providence. Although my favorite character in that movie is Drugs DeLaney.

JK

"I can't believe they make everyone work a lot and not smoke"

Robert

Stolen Fator

JK

I remember my high school girlfriend had The Sweetest Thing on DVD....thats not what broke us up, but we certainly never watched it or talked about it

Hard To Gwil

Was really hoping for a Ghost Ship situation when Anna Faris drove off attached to the Christmas lights. Would it have killed them to slice ONE person in half. Boo Urns

Rose Esposito

That's him??? Omg I never made the connection

Rose Esposito

Definitely thought Julie Hagerty was no longer with us, turns out I was thinking of Jill Clayburgh. uh welp

Matthew Lloyd

Yeah, he's lost a load of weight.

Odin Blaine

Never seen this so I decided to give it a watch before listening. I was screaming at my TV during the scene with him and Amy Smart in bed. Even if Doctor Strange ran 5 quadrillion different scenarios There is no dimension out there where he wouldn’t be all over her. He’s a playboy in LA and he’s now with his dream girl and he’s like “oooh but it’s awkward” and I’m screaming “GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE AITH THIS” ugh and the friendzone stuff is so dumb. Love Anna Farris being unhinged she’s great. Couple laughs but very few. Left a bitter taste.

Tim O'

Chris is a True Anon listener? We love to hear it 👁

Woofenstein

Nice Butterfly Effect mention. It’s my favorite WHM episode :))))

Matthew Lloyd

I think he also listens to behind the bastards.

Catboyslim

I’m from Salem, and I approve this suggestion!

Catboyslim

The Thicker Man-Santa comes to Salem to investigate why everybody’s on the naughty list, and finds out why the hard way! Chestnuts won’t be the only nuts bring roasted this holiday!

Tim O'

*bong noises*

Woofenstein

Gotta pay homage to the master

Jamie

I love Stephen Root's monologue at the end of Call Me By Your Name

Jamie

This is how I found out that DJ Qualls is gay

Matthew Lloyd

Jim Jeffries tells a funny story about how DJ came out to the world.

Elise

As a Canadian, I am shocked that I never realized Ryan Reynolds was the Temu Jim Carrey!

RJ Cunningham

Didn't realize you guys covered this. This is in my 10 most hated movies ever and one of the major reasons I dislike Ryan Reynolds quite a bit
