“There’s a decent setup for a [Michael] Haneke movie here…” - Chris

On this week’s episode, the holiday fun continues with a wild conversation all about Krampus! Was the K-man one of the OG internet creepy pastas? Couldn’t this film have a bit more teeth and not have been so beholden to nailing a PG-13? How many beloved Christmas movies is this movie being at once? Well done with the casting here, this flick is stacked with fantastic comedic actors which is a bonus. But, what’s the deal with the gingerbread men having more screen time than Krampus? And what’s with that Twilight Zone ending? PLUS: Cookie Puss holiday desserts for all!

Krampus stars Adam Scott, Toni Colette, Allison Tolman, David Koechner, Emjay Anthony, Stefania LaVie Owen, Krista Stadler, and Conchata Ferrell as Aunt Dorothy; directed by Michael Dougherty.

The gingerbread man get worse when you realize Justin Roiland voices of them.

Odin Blaine

Just watched it for the first time. Ten years after it came out. It’s not great!!

Jim

Krampus wearing a krampus mask. Can’t believe he wasn’t sued by the wrestler Sting.

Busiris

Very much sharing the sentiment that Michael Dougherty has only made movies that make me shrug. I even recently went back to Trick 'R Treat for the first time since watching it when it was new and after years of people heralding it as a modern Halloween classic. Sadly I still feel nothing about it.

Eren Keskin

Krampus should've put his long tongue to good use

Tim O'

I had to watch Trick-R-Treat at a Halloween party this year. Everyone was telling me that it's great. It wasn't!

johnny stocker

I watched this last night, and for about 20 minutes I thought they were really going to have something interesting in the way of a horror comedy here. The opening credits with people fighting over Black Friday, Koechner and Tolman's obnoxious family, the ominous storm...but then yeah, it spun off the rails pretty quick. Also, totally agree about the PG 13 of it all. Gotta go for it with something like this.

I think the ground zero for Krampus on the internet was the Venture Bros Christmas special 2004. I feel like before that he was pretty obscure but then the Adult Swim watching Millenials got a hold of him. There is also a parade or something in Austria(I think) where guys dress like Krampus and scare kids and chase women. Honestly as far as weird Christmas stuff I have a soft spot for the goat demon buddy of Saint Nick. My biggest regret was not figuring out how to start a Kickstarter for my version of Elf on the Shelf, Krampus in the kloset.

Eric is joking about the whole hating your parents for lying about Santa but there is a whole subset of folks online who legit say they do. It’s fucking sad honestly. Your parents stayed up late, probably a bit drunk, to play this fun game with you and put a little magic in your life. Also buying you at least one more present and not even taking credit for it. They are almost as bad as the folks who don’t do Santa because “I don’t want a fake man to take credit for all the hard work I did to buy them gifts”. Just not getting the spirits of the damn holiday.

James

During the Puppet Master conversation I thought the were gonna bring up the Puppet Master video game that came out a few years ago.

Evan

She sure yells at that kid in sixth sense 😅

WarOfTheBees

Between the Santa story and the Oma story this episode is like a mini Gleep Glossary on Eric himself

TJ Gaines

How have they not watched “Christmas Vacation” as a WLM and “Christmas Vacation 2: Eddie’s Island Adventure” as a WHM yet?

Matt

Andrew just summed up my exact god damn feelings about Christmas. I thought for years I didn't like it. Turns out I just didn't like doing the SAME FUCKING THING every single year. Same conversation. Same bad turkey (sorry mom). Same awful music. It wasn't until I met my wife and we were like "you know we can just order Chinese Food on Christmas Eve and have a tall glass of water and watch some movies" I realized that, hey, you can make this your own thing.

The running "Pittsburgh" gag cracks me up. If any C or D level character, event is taking place, it's taking place in Pittsburgh.

Matthew Lloyd

Yes i agree Allison Tollman is an incredibly beautiful woman and has been my long time crush since season 1 Fargo.

jribs

Allison has an amazing episode of Review where she's a nurse that starts dating Andy Daly after he destroyed his life again. Then Andy Daly has to review what it's like to blackmail someone so he blackmails her for stealing pills.

Matthew Lloyd

Saw a boring tv show of hers where she's a small town sheriff who rescues a little girl from a plane crash and adopts her and the little girl may or may not be an android. She was good though

ediblegenius

I wonder if Andrews opinion has changed now that we're coming up on the finale of It welcome to Derry. Would love a one off of him and Chris recapping it

Aidan

☝️ Found the parent that lies to their kid

Lar

One of the few “horror” movies I convince my mom to watch bc she’s German and liked the krampus stuff and the grandma who speaks German. Some parts are a little too creepy for her but she does like the silly gingerbread men and the dog.

Lar

I would love if they could do a one off with James & Chelsea about it but I know everyone is so busy all the time to collab.

Dan sulin

Hell yeah! Lying is part of the parent job.

Unicorn Trista

Did a real L O L at work when Steve sang an old timey Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer at the end

Sehnsucht666

One of the movies I accidentally predicted they'd do, again! As usual a movie I kinda sorta enjoy that the guys do I get that moment of clarity; oh right I DO hate a lot of stuff about this movie. Will always watch it for the jack-in-the-box and creature effects though. Anyways fantastic take as always

Erin MacAllister

I have the art book for this, it's pretty sick

Tala Hobballah

Was going to quit Welcome to Derry and then they had to dangle Hallorann in my face.

Trey McKinley

Always appreciate the content, but this was a miss. Krampus should be celebrated as a pg-13 gateway genre horror flick, that has even at the time of its release, been forgotten to the sands of time. Light, fun, and includes a shitload if fun creature designs.

Matthew Lloyd

Did anyone see that love death and robots episode where the kids stay up late to try and catch a glimpse of Santa?

Harry Baker

I was going to cancel my patreon subscription and leave a bitter message, but then Eric said "it's okay to like a movie." So I'll keep my subscription.

I.C. Weiner

I had an oma, but I never heard the term omi until this movie. I really appreciated Eric clarifying the difference. Also, I thought my oma had perfect English until my wife met her and told me she speaks broken English, so, Eric once again correct

Hard To Gwil

If we're talking puppet movie garbage I'd say watch Dolls 1987 instead of any Puppet Master movies. Even for Full Moon those things suuuuuck.

Robert

“She gets tempted by a husband who doesn’t sweat while on the toilet” got me good

Adam Ray

Pubert. The Addams baby was named Pubert. I will never appreciate knowing that instead of valuable information.

Melissa Benjamin

I know this movie isn’t great, but I still love it, and it’s a yearly watch for me. 95% of the reason is Adam Scott in that cardigan.

Jonathan Lyons

Steve fixed it. Those punished by krampus are stuck in a Christmas loop. The ending is supposed to be creepy because no one really knows what happened. They should've shown that everyone deserved it. And it should be heartbreaking when they actually try to help each other but ultimately get got. This should've started as a Christmas comedy and ended as a horror movie. Really is a good idea that was executed terribly. I feel like this would be better made now in a post post elevated horror world.

RJ Cunningham

The cousin reading the boys letter to Santa was making me so angry, filling me with deadly rage that it's embarrassingly one of strongest emotions a movie has ever pulled out of me
