On this holiday edition of our cartoon recap show, we're chatting about the 1969 Rankin & Bass hand drawn classic, Frosty the Snowman!

Originally broadcast back on December 7, 1969, this Christmas classic features Jimmy Durante as our narrator, shown here in a particularly cruel caricature! We've also got Frosty trying to buy an expensive train ticket to the North Pole, a small girl nearly freezing to death in a box car, a cop harassing a snowman in public, Santa speaking fluent "rabbit," and an eerie magician/professor character who's really trying to snatch these kids!

Frosty the Snowman (1969) stars Jimmy Durante, Billy De Wolfe, Paul Frees, June Foray, and Jackie Vernon as Frosty; directed by Arthur Rankin & Jules Bass.

Puhleeze consider doing A Year Without A Santa Claus. The Miser Bros are too much!

Man this episode really makes me want to smoke my corn cob pipe right now, especially on this cold day.

When I was little I would cry about the Frosty puddle every single time. I never even thought about Karen having to watch it happen in real time. So now that’s in my head……

It’s weird things you assume are universal, at least in the US, that aren’t. I assumed everyone got a solid two weeks of off for the holidays. Usually the week of Christmas and the week of New Years. It’s how it’s always been in the Chicago burbs I grew up and for my kids now. Of course I also assumed kids got out of school for the summer the first week of June and started after Labor Day but that varies just within public schools in my area. You’d figure this would be something figured out on a national level for public schools but at this rate who knows how many years public schools have left

I can’t believe you didn’t talk about Santa leaving Karen on the fukn roof at the end.🤣🤣 That always makes me laugh when I watch it. Like, WTF Santa??!! You got the water brain too??!! 🤣

Or Frost Returns, with Frost voices by John Goodman

Ben Sharpe

You guys make me laugh so hard. You have to write a story and do the voices for a new stop motion Christmas special!

I've actually always wondered about this, but years ago when I brought it up to my wife, she made a good point. She grew up in Miami where they had to start and end school at certain parts of the year due to the weather. It would be too hot in Miami to have kids be in schools so they had to wrap up the school year differently. - Andrew

Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July is fun because it's the only stop-motion Frosty Rankin-Bass did... although the 90-minute run time is a bit much. But since it takes place in July, might it qualify as a "Hot Frosty?" * my apologies if this is addressed during the episode, but I likely won't get to listen to it until tomorrow

I was wondering how Steve's hotel story was going to relate to frosty the snowman

Steven Avalos

All this Jimmy Durante talk has me thinking, I wonder if Chris and Andrew are all caught up with Smiling Friends to see a certain narrator pop up.

Busiris

In a week with two snowman-related pieces of media, this is the one where I was most disturbed by the lack of clothes on the snowman. Even a scarf would've made him look a little less... free (snow) ballin'.

Elizabeth Lake

Jimmys Chicken Shack!!! I saw them play a ton of shows in LA. My boyfriend at the time helped record their first album at 4th street recording. I was also around for the stained tribute album. Good times

I knew Steve would be coming in hot with the Durante impersonations ❤️

I recently discovered something I think is very cool that I was waiting to share with my favorite internet personalities until it was relevant, and it turns out, surprisingly, it is this episode. My college roommate plays Leatherface in Monster: The Ed Gein Story. I was so excited seeing him on screen.

There is a really fun Goonies themed tiki bar in San Clamente probably not too far from the cum hotel. Sorry to 3 years ago Steve to not providing that information to him then

Vincent Guereca

I can't be the only one who wanted the Jimmy's Chicken Shack riff to go on longer!

Craig

Well I think listening to this episode might become a new Christmas tradition for me, along with the Love Actually episode

Lawyer here. It’s abandoned property once he throws it away. Money please

Only WHM could make a reference to Goodfellas while waxing about fucking Frosty the Snowman

Ben Sharpe

Eric i went to see David Copperfield the magician in the 90s as well. i loved the music they use in these shows.

Tim Batson

Rankin & Bass are wonderfully creepy.

John Locke

Omg. The guy from Microwave Massacre is Frosty. I knew his voice sounded familiar. Now I can't stop imagining Frosty saying, "hey Karen. That's a nice pussy".

Christopher Oxentine

We did go to a couple years on Christmas eve in the 70's and 80's if it fell on a weekday.
