“It’s always a weird drifter with a dubious backstory” - Eric on mall Santas

On this week’s episode, we finally welcome film critic/author/podcaster/great dude, Alonso Duralde on the show to chat about the totally outrageous Christmas horror schlocker, Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker! How hilarious is this face-hugger Santa toy in the cold open? Was that really the best name Mickey Rooney’s character could’ve gone with for his toy store? How hilarious is it that this robot actually has a bump? Is this lady too casual about her husband dying in a horrific household freak accident? And was that Clint Howard we spied back there? PLUS: What do you call a bunch of fans of the classic literary character, Geppetto? We break it down.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker stars William Thorne, Jane Higginson, Van Quattro, Tracy Fraim, Neith Hunter, Conan Yuzna, Brian Bremer, Clint Howard, and Mickey Rooney as Joe Petto; directed by Martin Kitrosser.

Also, be sure to pick up the latest edition of Alonso’s kick-ass book, “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas,” which is a totally essential guide for your holiday viewing and is guaranteed to make a killer stocking stuffer for the cinephile in your life. I feel like this thing was nuts in just the right way that it would've made for a classic MST3K episode.

Calikusiolek

This movie has one of the best car explosions of all time

I know a lot of people have this experience, but this movie was one of those times where I watched it as an adult and realized very early on that I had also watched it decades prior as a kid but I didn't know what it was at the time. Just seeing the Santa toy attacking the step-dad brought it all flooding back. Always a wild feeling to encounter that experience when watching any movies from yesteryear.

I’ve been a fan of Alonso for years!! So glad he’s on the episode, y’all were all hilarious!! A new favorite for sure!

Boombox Cowboy

Holy crap! I randomly just watched this movie last weekend! Hell yeah!

Joan

I just watched Christmas Holiday on YT last week. Chris is right, it's an excellent film. Highly recommend.

Why would Mickey Rooney have photos from his childhood available? He was probably the first person in history who didn't have the rights to their childhood photos because every photo of him was probably owned by another studio and I doubt they would license it for the movie. " Sorry Mick, I'd really love to give you this photo of you and your mom but MGM won't let me"

Jessica M

You got Alonso Duralde! Love that dude.

Recently I celebrated my niece's birthday and got her a stuffed dog that she immediately named Pedo. I turned to her dad and said, "Really, pedo?" He responded, "Petto, as in Ge." I absolutely didn't believe him and assumed my BiL was a latter day QAnon freak yelling about pedos in 2025, until this episode. IC Weiner's BiL Totally Exonerated By the WHM Boys!

Plus the remakes/reboots

John Locke

This movke is 85 minutes too long.

I'm confident that Rifftrax probably covered it in their quest to perform over every movie ever made.

Emil Svensson

That cacacophy of Boomy the Boom Mic-voices really made me jump, listening with headphones.

RJ Cunningham

Fucking laugh out loud funny - that was like a Simpsons gag

RJ Cunningham

Took me faaaarrrrr too long to understand why he was named Pino, when it dawned on me at the end I was like “oh ya.” Thought it was a nod to Pinot Grigio as Mickey Rooney was quite the alcoholic

RJ Cunningham

The late 80s early 90s of the movie was giving me painful nostalgia, the beginning of the end of normal life in America. The notion of going out to the store or anywhere felt so much more impulsive and easy. Can’t quite find the words for it, but the internet and then phone swayed the amount of time that you are staying inside your own home. There would have been no toy store visit, it would have been looking on Amazon and staying home

RJ Cunningham

And didn’t get the Gep-Petto thing until you guys said it. Brilliant script writing

MarkNM

10/10 no notes, except that Alonso was a great extra spice.

RJ Cunningham

I enjoyed Alonso tremendously, will check out his other stuff

You don't need to worry about content in movies while on flights anymore. Airlines show unedited movies like Anora and 28 Years Later. Nudity and all...it's the wild west up there.

MANTE IV

Time to pitch the Bill & Ted’s Heinous Society animated series to Netflix

Rose Esposito

I was pretty high watching this, and I'm glad to find that everything I found bizarre and confusing at the time was, in fact, legitimately bizarre and confusing.

Jethro Gulner

A one-eyed monster attacking a woman with spread legs and banging into her thigh? My wife would say "typical male aim"
