“I love the music though…” - Eric

On this week’s episode, we’re chatting about the sequel nobody had a hankering for, Tron: Ares!

Why do we keep giving Jared Leto chances? Couldn’t they have gone a few more rounds with that script? Why on Earth did we need that ghostly cameo? Is it worth watching these movies sober? Can an amazing soundtrack carry a film all on its own? And how do you not get Bruce Boxleitner a check for this somehow? PLUS: Josh Gad playing the Grid’s seedy porn program guy? Why not?

Tron: Ares stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, and Jeff Bridges as Ghost Flynn or something; directed by Joachim Rønning.

Fun fact the script for this was originally called Tron: Ass

Jacob Ferguson

Ooh managed to stay up late enough for a fresh ep drop

Brad Mull

It’s such a shame, the one person pushing for this is also one of the main reasons it failed. As soon as I heard leto was heading this I was out. And I’m a massive fan of legacy, might be in my top 10 of all time. Programs and grid tech in the real world makes zero sense, but I was hoping leto playing a robot would be easy for him, but he just had to have that darn beard. Yeah I bought the soundtrack, but I’ll probably never watch it again

Eren Keskin

It's been 15 years since Legacy. No wonder Jared Leto was interested.

Adam Ray

The story and script for this movie was 100% made by A.I. You can't change my mind.

Darryl Bowen

I guess I shut if off pretty quickly because I didn't know there was more with Evan Peters. I thought the system was off and when he scanned himself in to escape the cops he was going nowhere....an empty void or just dying. Also Athena has a line to Gillian Andersons character as she stabs her about (I have many lives, but you only have one). I thought that was weird for her to say to Anderson and it should of been a line said as Evan Peters is dying...which I guess we don't get.

Nathan M

Fully agree with Steve on Tron: Ares and fully disagree with Steve on Tron: Legacy

Barista Bran

Leto works in Blade Runner 2049 because you're supposed to hate him. They needed a scuzzy creep for Wallace and they nailed it with Leto.

Watch_N_Rewatch

Can we get Trent Reznor to score every other movie that releases, that's my birthday wish lol Can't wait to listen to this EP, cheers boys 🍻

TJ Gaines

And his role was very limited. It added to the intrigue of him, and the hatred of his character.

MarkNM

Disney's script formulas have basically been analog AI for 15-20 years, so it was a pretty smooth transition.

Adam Ray

None of them have felt THIS fucking copy and paste. I'll admit I haven't interacted very much with AI, but from the stories I've seen other people post that it comes up with, it feels like the exact same thing. Pick a genre, give a couple character details, and then AI will cherry pick the story from this that and the other similar films and jumble it all up and then make sense of it. Sorta.

Jan

Fun times when Steven & i agree

Smaug

It's aggressively OK

Smaug

I don't dislike this soundtrack but I find it pretty meh in its genre. Maybe it's that I'm just constantly listening to darkwave and synthwave, but there are a lot of darkwave artists doing more innovative stuff than NIN pulled off here. A large downgrade from the Daft Punk soundtrack IMO

Watch_N_Rewatch

Lol I'll report back as soon as I watch it

Watch_N_Rewatch

I'm obsessed with dark wave and synth wave, my Spotify is littered with it. Found a YouTube channel that plays almost all John Carpenteresque synth wave and it's amazing. Good point, Daft Punk kicked ass on Legacy

Matt

You're telling me they made a Jared Leto digital-Pinocchio movie?! WOOF

Smaug

Awesome!

RJ Cunningham

New movies that are horrible are so much worse and lifeless than older movies that are horrible.

I.C. Weiner

So, Idk if this is what you guys were referring to or just a fun coincidence that Disney actually did your joke, my guess is the latter. But when Tron: Legacy came out they had a nightly Tron rave at California Adventure for years. At the time there was very limited locations you could drink alcohol at the Disney parks (and for all I can remember it may have been the only location) and so me and my now wife would go to it whenever we were at Disneyland/California Adventure just to get our fix. It was about as nerdy as you could possibly imagine and I feel confident no one was on any drugs.

James C Harris

I am a GIANT Tron fanboy. This movie made me HATE The franchise!

MarkNM

"Ah, now, now, you do eventually plan to have Tron in your Tron movie, right? Hello? Hello?"

Jen L Greene

I remember that. They also set up a Flynn’s Arcade too. One of my friends went to it while it was still there and he saved some of the tokens that they had at the arcade.

Rose Esposito

I really liked Young Woman and the Sea. :\ Great Stephen Graham stuff in that one. Disney really screwed it over w/ that tiny release.

Daniel Garcia

I'm always down for more NIN, but this felt like b-sides of "With Teeth" and called it a day, never really quite finding it's aggressive edge because the movie never fucking stops. And if it did stop to ruminate it would fall the hell apart since it all doesn't make any sense and or you're supposed to be rooting for one CEO as opposed to another which is a pretty shit choice. I'll say this about Legacy, it at least had the balls to immerse you in what the audience wanted to see, The Grid, and would take it's time even in quiet parts. Hedlund is whatever, Bridges is being his best Dudeness but all the action is contained inside The Grid which looked cool as opposed to the Pixels finale we got with Ares. Just traaaaaaaaasssshhhhhhh.

DMAC

This weekend at The Gettin' Place it's Depeche Mode

Evan

"When you think 'giant heads', think 'The Big Giant Head'." 😅

Rose Esposito

I'm not sure I agree that he works in BR2049, but I agree that role suits him better than this one. The whole idea here is that Ares gradually gains humanity and empathy, and Leto...cannot play that.

Jan

Is it sad that i spotted Gary Veynerchuk in the beginning?

Damon LeCornu

"Hey honey, let's try a reverse 9/11 tonight!"

Kyle Godown

Got like 50 min into this and was like "do I like this movie?" And then Leto started becoming a real boy and the overly complicated Marvel movie ending kicked in and I was like "phew, I don't"

Amberwing Tundrawing

Ok the Greek mythology stuff isn't just overused, it's uninspired. Ares was the god of war and bloodshed; the only thing he loved about humanity was the fact we kill each other. There's no way a character named after him would fall in love with life after a raindrop fell on his head or whatever

Amberwing Tundrawing

If they needed a reference to someone becoming human, why not Tron: Pygmalion or something?

I.C. Weiner

While watching the movie I sent this exact meme to my friends

Busiris

An example of the worst kind of bad movie, the one where it's so easy to think of ways to make the movie exponentially better (beyond Leto being not in it). The trailer always led me to believe Ares was a bad guy that goes rogue and starts trying to take over the real world, which is a pretty basic blockbuster movie plot but at least it feels like there's some energy to that idea.

Robin Fry

I’ve just had the pleasure of viewing The Bone Temple and it treats being a fan of a totally awesome 80s band exactly the way you guys say this movie should have, and it rules. As do many things about that movie (Bone Temple, not Tron: Ares)

profondo robbo

I think the idea is that he's named Ares by Dillinger because he's intended to be a warrior and nothing else, but that doesn't mean his programming can't evolve away from that. I will concede it still sounds uninspired.

DMAC

Funny enough, the B-Sides of With Teeth still make a better album than most. However, you aren't exactly wrong either.

Convincing John

Jeff Bridges the Computer Ghost: Hey, looks like you're in the third sequel to a Tron movie! Here are the rules so you can survive!

Matthew Lloyd

What guy from Independence day is in a cult? Quaid?

Dennis Stack

Totally stepped away to listen to Policy of Truth when they talked about Depeche Mode's discography. Me, "Violator IS fucking great!....I'll be back in a minute" 😂

J HEASLEY

This is just the last season of westworld. Which was awful

RJ Cunningham

My mind right to Shatner too with the Big Giant Head

Brett Chatfield

You guys are the best! Thanks for all the great content and episodes!
