“I’ve seen this six times…” - Andrew

On this month’s We ❤️ Movies episode, we’re chatting about Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest cinematic achievement, One Battle After Another!

How absolutely fantastic is Teyana Taylor in this movie? Can we confirm that audiences love it when Leo plays low-status guys? What a year for the legendary Jim Downey, huh? Has there been a better Steely Dan needle drop? And could Sean Penn take his fake nose from this movie and use it to star in a Jimmy Durante biopic? PLUS: Coming next summer, Paul Thomas Anderson’s American Pie featuring Seann William Scott as Steve Lockjaw!

One Battle After Another stars Teyana Taylor, Chase Infinity, Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, Shayna McHayle, Paul Grimstad, Dijon Duenas, Brooklyn Demme, Sean Penn, Eric Schweig, Tony Goldwyn, James Downey, John Hoogenakker, Kevin Tighe, James Raterman, April Grace, and Benicio Del Toro as Sensei Sergio St. Carlos; directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Kuato (and the freedom brigade)

Considering that the real col. Lockjaw is currently tearing up my local area... this movie hits like a bomb. FUCK ICE.

Frank Grimes

great flick. Sensi was a great ally...Penn was crazy as lockjaw...the Christmas Adventure Club acronym can't be a coincidence

Hansel Lopez

Sorry to hear that, dude. Fuck ICE.

Josh

Teyana Taylor is top contender for greatest living movie star.

Jack Burton

Hey It’s okay to like a movie, but 6 times? I could barely get through 1 watch. Taylor is awful. This movie is the worst one I’ve seen so far.

Rod

I think I’m up to about 6 times at this point as well — such a fun ride

Jan

Oh crap. Guess i gotta see this comedy

Chris

This is the worst movie you've seen so far? Excited for you to see a second movie!

Jack Burton

Oh I have, I sat through that shitty avatar movie and now with these 2 movies I have about 6hrs of my life I’ll never get back.

MarkNM

Sean Penn is so gatdam good in this. Repellent but compelling. It's kind of like if Spencer Tracy had played Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West. Just a big nasty ass character inhabited by an actor who knows how to get into the cracks and crevices, who relishes a rare opportunity to do so.

Jamie

I wouldn't say it's shitty, but it is extremely overrated.

Geoff Gershon

Is it OK to admit that I liked Sinners and Marty Supreme a BIT more than this? 🙂 I honestly think all three movies are a little too long but the other two just had more depth and tighter structures....

We Hate Movies

It's okay to admit whatever you want, Geoff. It's all gravy. - Andrew

Geoff Gershon

I really liked it but I do get your sentiment a bit - this seems to be THE film which film-bros just won't shut up about this year - like Anora last year or Oppenheimer two years ago - to the point where it just makes the flaws of the film more obvious to me.

Geoff Gershon

Great....so WHEN are we getting that Patreon review of Sinners? 😆

Watch_N_Rewatch

The characters in this film are incredible and so funny, Leo had me laughing my ass off, Benicio was amazing, his delivery and good vibes, but Sean Penn and his entire story, so bizzare and just a terrific watch. Starting your EP right now! Can't wait to hear the talk, cheers 🍻

Jamie

Could you imagine if any other white director made a movie that fetishizes black women this much? It's the Japanese scene from Licorice Pizza stretched to feature length, and has two of the most marginalized people (Perfida and the only queer coded character in the entire movie) sell out their friends.

Jamie

And of course the hero is the mediocre white dude who rejected revolution and yells at people who have triggers. This movie is the most neoliberal smokeshow since they built a cultural center at the end of Black Panther. The only political message is "ICE is bad". Wow, what a brave fucking take.

Louis Brooks

There's been a very interesting conversation with many black women film critics on the ramifications on the how black women were depicted in the film. There was a bit of a divide for the blind spots PTA had for black female representation and why he decided on the race swap on for the book to the film. Some liked it others hated it. I unfortunately was on the dislike side which was sad cause I wanted to like it but i kept thinking Monster's Ball. Technically it looked great. And yes, Black women do not have to be likable characters but seeing some black women walk out on the film in the theater....was telling. There's a great college professor Jared A. Ball who had an interesting critique on the film on his YouTube channel. I would take a look.

Jamie

FD signifier breaks it down real well too

Louis Brooks

So ugh I cannot belive I have to defend this film a little. Lol. I hear you. It was extremely troublesome to notice PTA's certian blinders had, since he stated this film took him 10 years to make and not once said hey....maybe I should give this a pass to other writers to make sure I am covering bases, so there is bit more nuance to their actions / decision-making. The character in the book are all white and (Frenesi /aka Perfidia) is a white woman. So the aspect of sexual dynamics and power bt white and black women is different. That's just how it is. So the book is a little more clear to Frenesi's path and why she did was she did. PTA said - NOPE! Roll cameras! I also was annoyed that when some black film critics took issues with the film many were told (even from other black film critics), that "it's not that serious, calm down. You dont understand cinema" which is a gut punch. Because it downplays solid opinions and makes it seem like people who take issue with the film are "too sensitive". So technically if you want to learn great camera work. Watch the film. Storyline - while some aspects are interesting and .....Ghetto Pat (lord) is funny, kind of. Seeing this film and what's happening to Sinners and now Aiden Ross....lol man, exciting times.

Paul

My #1 Film of 2025.

Tim O'

Courage, Bob.

Alex Rodriguez

The part during the riot that the people were chanting at the police was “pinche puercos” meaning “fucking pigs”

RJ Cunningham

Unfortunately one of the major thoughts I had while viewing was how insular and self-absorbed PTA must be

RJ Cunningham

Oppenheimer was a faaaaar better movie than either of those two and wasn’t a film-bro movie, it was THE movie

MarkNM

I think at the end of the day all of the political and social commentary window dressing simply frames a spaghetti western set in modern times, up to and including the fetishization and exploitative elements that popped up in that genre. Ultimately it says a bit less than people want it to even though there's some valid commentary in there. But it's a decent western. Also: Pat/Bob isn't the hero, Willa is. Bob is Jack Burton.

Tony King

Just finished watching this for the first time, and really enjoyed it. Sinners is still my number 1 2025 film, but this is up there. It was funnier than I was expecting, and I thought Chase Infiniti was very good.

Busiris

Sheesh, some real "It's okay to not like a movie" energy in the comments here today, which feels rare for a WLM selection. Oh well, I understand the hang-ups people may have but I still see it as a really fun, gorgeous-looking comedic thriller with some real top tier performances from pretty much everyone. It's not my favorite movie of 2025 but it's up there.

Jonnie Sea

Bob is not the hero. Now granted I’ve only seen it once, but what I saw were events happening in Bobs orbit that he failed to react or respond to in any “heroic” way. He’s the character the audience has to understand, as he’s the linchpin of the story. I’m not saying this at an attempt at a “gotcha”. He is surrounded by heroic people (Sensi, his daughter etc) In terms of his rejection of rev and yelling at a person with triggers, Bob is a man frozen…completely frozen…his politics, his actions…it’s like the person that still thinks KoRn is the best band of all time. The world and his own agenda moved on without him and was a really interesting look at left on left resentment…which we later also get right on right resentment with Penn and the club. Bob isn’t left enough, Penn isn’t right enough. I think the gobbler once said “There are heroes on both sides, evil is everywhere” and this film likes to play with that. Does Bob need to get with the times? Yes. Is he all bad though because he isn’t keyed into our modern perceptive lens? Kidnapping is bad right? But that kidnapper dude also takes out those pathetic militia guys. The movie isn’t perfect, but it’s really a fascinating look at the real world…through the lens of a complete fiction

marathedemon

Love the mention of stupid rat torture.

Alethia St. Joan

Saw this 4x in IMAX 70, 2x in VistaVision, 2x DCP, and numerous times at home. Also saw a test screening of it back in March and there were some notable differences. Love this movie. Love PTA.

Catherine McKee

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’m going in.

Alex

Got to finally see this on HBO max, but had been following since it was shooting under the title Project BC due to the fact that Leo was spotted in my hometown outside a market. Very cool to see that this ended up being the final product. My mom’s high school was the baktan cross high school and it was surreal to see everything going on in there

Dylan Sludge

When Lockjaw got shot multiple people including me CHEERED and whooped in my theater

RJ Cunningham

How you “saw it” is what everyone is up in arms about. PTA is a fucking headline vulture with no care toward society, same with Garland, and then hiding behind it being stories of people…fucking joke. People are being killed and every institution that upholds our lives is being destroyed. if you don’t care, don’t comment about the situation in how fun it is, and don’t make a movie that elicits that response. Like making a pro-Iraq War movie set in NYC on 9-11 but claiming those events are window dressing. PTA is rich and aloof……any societal message he has is bad or insincere

Busiris

With all due respect, my enjoyment of a movie and my awareness of the reality of what's going on in the world are not mutually exclusive. At no point in my comment did I say "I don't care" in any context, so don't put words in my mouth. What I don't care for is you getting effectively getting in my face just because I said I saw things about the movie that I enjoyed. If you have a problem with that, I suggest you take your hang-ups somewhere more productive. (or, to put it more bluntly - fuck off.)

Rose Esposito

I really really like this movie, but PTA's total lack of comment about anything happening in the world rn at the Globes was pretty egregious, given that this is his most overtly political film. Maybe he's saving it for the Oscars, idk. EDIT: OK, I forgot he actually quoted "this pussy don't pop for you" on the hallowed Globes stage, so he gets a few points for that.

James Marron

Rewatched it after 3 months last night. Liked it in theaters, Enjoyed it WAY more on rewatch. Looking forward to listening

Louis Brooks

Alex Garland? How so? Civil War?

Louis Brooks

Idk this statement kinda says I don’t care "Sheesh, some real "It's okay to not like a movie" energy in the comments here today, which feels rare for a WLM selection. Oh well. "

Busiris

I absolutely agree with that. He had at least two opportunities to say something meaningful with the platform and inexplicably didn't say a thing. I certainly wasn't aware that I had to preface my opinion on a movie with my stance on the politics (or lack thereof) of the creator. I guess I learned something new!

Busiris

Hi, Louis - Very good job selectively ignoring the part after that where I understand why people have an issue with the movie but I still found reason to like the movie.

Busiris

I'm going to go ahead and ignore this comment section after I send this since it's somehow become a place for some patrons to misinterpret and critique my opinion about a movie. Despite other people here sharing how they also like/love this movie, I pointed out the number of people here that don't like/love it (for any number of *valid* reasons) and I guess that became an open invitation for people to assume I don't take issue with the real fucked up problems going on out in the world right now. I'm sorry that my phrasing and/or lack of context rubbed one or two or more people the wrong way but I'm not going to stand by and let people make sweeping judgments about me based on a couple of misinterpreted sentences. I hate that I even feel I have to write this since I'll come across as just being defensive, but I did it for myself as it does make me feel better to let it out as some attitudes/reactions to me on here genuinely upset me, which is rare and unfortunate for a platform where I feel most people on here share all the same sentiments on a lot of more important issues out there, even if they don't realize it.

Joel Myers

Had the pleasure of working with a lot of the crew that worked on this on a tv show I PA’d on, and they talked endlessly about how great of a set this was! Glad the movie turned out as excellent as it did too, proof you don’t have to run a set like a tyrant to make great art!

RJ Cunningham

I would watch special features of most movies I watch if they were available, don’t even understand the embarrassment over it

Massey and Graham

Fan since 2014. First time I’ve ever been “screaming from my car” was up until There Will Be Blood finally got mentioned as a top 5 PTA film. Love you guys! -Dusk Til Dawn Attendee from ATX

Darryl Bowen

When they showed Lockjaw to his office I was looking for plastic on the floor, saw nome and faked me out that they weren't going to kill him

Robert

I don’t remember the last time a character has redeemed an entire movie for me like Sensei did. I never knew how funny Del Torro could be.

I.C. Weiner

Sorry, I wanted to respond to the person who responded to you but it won't let me directly: One Battle After Another was filmed in 2024, so before the fascist takeover. The fact that it feels like it is in response to 2025 kind of disproves your point that it is akin to a pro-Iraq or that this movie has bad politics or is aloof. He saw where things were going and made a movie about it

I.C. Weiner

This movie is giving me a lot of One Battle After Another vibes

I.C. Weiner

I truly didn't know people didn't vibe with this movie and specifically its politics until Steve mentioned it in passing during the episode and reading the comments here. Also, to Chris saying he's sure there are 3%ers in California. There sure are! They all drive $50k trucks and cosplay as revolutionaries but strangely aren't present at any of the anti-fascist protests, they must be too busy planning and training to take down the federal government and to ensure democracy reigns. I will say, this is far and away my favorite movie of the year and was very personal to me. This was the first movie I saw after being diagnosed with cancer and my largest concern is my 6 year old son. I desperately want to help guide him into adulthood because I am terrified of him being radicalized into some white nationalist bullshit without me(as my childhood best friend was). This movie touches on a lot of this and the ending message of you just have to trust your kids hit me like a ton of bricks and I was a complete mess leaving the theater. BTW, since seeing this movie we have a better idea about my cancer and statistically there is a good chance that I'll live to see my son into early adulthood (*knocks on all the fucking wood*)

We Hate Movies

We're pulling for you, I.C. Sending much love and good vibes for this new year. - Andrew

Chris

This movie is objectively great and anyone who says otherwise is part of a government disinformation campaign

Alex

Teyana Taylor was featured on My Super Sweet 16 so this is one of those beautiful synchronicities in the world... but yeah OBAA and 28YL were my faves of 2025 so I'm glad you're doing both. they're equally terrifying if, like me, you're a black british woman

Jonnie Sea

I cannot believe that in my first go around with the movie I missed the Latino Heat/Eddie Guerrero reference/shout out!

Zora McBride

A masterpiece as ever! We're just about to jump into the WLM with dinner. Love everybody and hoping we can all stay safe out there.

Miguel Sanchez

I hope people who enjoyed the movie keep their eyes open outside the theater too.

Chris

^^^ Paid agitator

Hard To Gwil

Sending some love from Canada. Fuck ICE in their nazi faces

Jack

Fair points about Eddington being cynical, but the antifa in Eddington were fake antifa working for the data center

Kuato (and the freedom brigade)

The stupid nazi counter protesters showed up in Minneapolis today (to show their support of ICE) and got mercilessly beaten by the citizens of Minneapolis. I've never been prouder.

Clever Girl

Love that movie. I was stressed until they acknowledged it too. Lol

Rose Esposito

I agree that this movie is her star-making turn, but I encourage everyone to check out A Thousand and One, in which she's also great.

Rose Esposito

btw, this is a deep cut and there's no reason I should know this, but a "Throckmorton sign" in medicine is when a man's dick is pointing in the direction of his injury, like a broken bone or whatever, on the X-ray image. So...file that one away.

Craig B

Apologies if it’s been commented on before, but doesn’t Willa use a karate-adjacent leg trip on Lockjaw during the canyon scene, before being given to Avanti? Or am I reaching?

Dan sulin

I’m late to this episode. Had not had a chance to watch the movie yet and thanks to the gift that keeps on giving, Covid, I found myself with several days of free time in bed. Love the movie. I’m a little harder of Perfidia then you all seem to be. The line that sticks out is Regina Hall saying “It’s like she doesnt think she’s pregnant” when she drinking, getting high and firing a giant machine gun while very preggers. I guess you can read that as a possibility she suspects the kid might not be Pat/Bobs and she feels guilt for whatever happened in that hotel. Part of the issue is we don’t really know all that happened in that hotel nor her thoughts on it. But I’m only one watch in so maybe I’ll watch her body language better next time. As for the Christmas Adventures Club. The name and the fact they say “Merry Christmas” to each other makes me wonder if they are really some old organization, like they imply, or if they are just a bunch of racist rich assholes who decided to create this club in the early 2000s during the “War on Christmas” bullshit. Anyways just posting thoughts. I plan to rewatch it with my oldest Boy and my wife at some point this week. Rare I want to watch the same movie twice in a week

Jaime Lee Ezell

I love this episode, thanks to the guys for making it!! There’s a creator going by @obscurae on tiktok that put the Eddington vs OBAA thing really well. Some directors seem to have contempt for Gen Z, but PTA doesn’t. He respects them!

Jeff Uffmann

Once was one too many times to see this movie

Gryphon

I had something similar happen with Superman. Saw it the first time my QR code ticket had Superman. The second time around when I got a physical paper ticket it had Superman:Legacy on it. How bizarre

DRB

the list is one of my favorites too. plus i get to hear fox say my name

Tim O'

Just realized something about the car chase at the end. It's a Mustang chasing after a Charger, which is the chase from Bullitt with the cars switched. Then you have Leo following behind in the old Acura, which kinda looks like Harvey Keitel's car from Pulp Fiction.
