“It’s a rare fighting style… Party Down Boxing” - Chris, on Jackson’s fight moves

On this month’s We ❤️ Movies episode, White Guy Karate Month spills over into WLM as we chat about one of JCVD’s best, Bloodsport!

How incredible are those splits, folks? Was Frank Dux, the guy whose life this movie was supposedly based on, completely full of shit? How did Jackson get that beer into the hospital? Is Bolo Yeung the only competitor allowed to kill people in the tournament because he was the returning champion? And that brick trick: cool or dumb? PLUS: Are the founding fathers’ lives in the public domain so we can make a Mortal Kombat-esque game about them?

Bloodsport stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bolo Yeung, Leah Ayres, Norman Burton, Forest Whitaker, Roy Chiao, and Donald Gibb as Ray Jackson; directed by Newt Arnold.

We hope you are enjoying We ❤️ Movies! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon supporter that you are. You help keep the lights on around the old clubhouse and us on the air. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you chose to spend some time with us!

Love that you guys are covering the fantastic documentary that is Bloodsport. Frank Dux is an American hero.

Jan

Kum eee tääää, which in Finish means… let’s just ask Cabin, he knows

David

Seeing Bloodsport as a bona fide WLM warms my heart.

Josh

Great movie, but I've always been more fond of Kickboxer.

Josh McB

Going to be practicing the Dim Mak while listening to this 💪🏼

Tim Batson

This just might be the greatest White Guy Karate movie of all time

Jason Reagan

So, for about 10 years, I accidentally owned Bloodsport on VHS. When I went off to college, I left a box of stuff in storage at my parent's house. In that box were Bloodsport and The Principal. I had rented them from a local video store. The video store VERY suddenly closed shop and, me being a Disgusting Shit Teen, had forgotten to return them. They sat at my parents' storeroom for about 10 years. One day, we were decluttering and I was pleasantly surprised to be reunited with them. Good times. Question: I've watched Bloodsport a dozen times. I never heard them call the love interest Janice. Did they call her that or are the guys using IMDB credits?

Jason Reagan

We need to get Frank Dux to team up with that lying sack of shit Tim Ballard (Sound of Freedom) to make the ultimate This Shit Never Really Happened film.

Jason

Back when little kid me truly believed that every fight could be won with the splits and powerful punch to sack.

Tony King

I thought I'd seen this movie, but it turns out I hadn't (I must have been thinking about Kickboxer!). It was a lot of fun. With this, and The Hunted, I have a real hankering to watch Mortal Kombat again! Also the talk of the dvd boxsets made me laugh, as I definitely bought a few of those back in the day. The only one I still have is Broken Arrow / Point Break / The Transporter.

Matt

this movie WILL make you walk around your house chanting "kumite! kumite!" for 2 days, no matter how irritated your wife gets at you

TJ Gaines

Challenge accepted!

TJ Gaines

For all the Muzzy fans… “Je suis la jeune fille!”

Les Whinen

Teddy Roosevelt would be the Ray Jackson of this founding fathers fighting game

Matt

As a fat kid with a starter jacket for a team and sport I never watched I feel SEEN (it was the Chicago Bulls and I had never seen a second of an NBA game)

Kevin Lynch

I highly recommend the podcast ‘BigFeets’ Seanbaby in his introductions reads excerpts of Frank Dux’s book “The Secret Man” they are hilarious

Eren Keskin

Twink death is a terrifying thing.

James

My only complaint about this episode is that it’s not longer.

RJ Cunningham

I know Cabin will recognize this but the walk to the Kimute specifically, and then a bunch of other aspects, that Beerfest used for their tournament

RJ Cunningham

I thought the childhood JCVD actor was deaf, I really did, for half his scenes until I put it together

Mike Olson

It has always fascinated me that Bloodsport is Trump’s favorite movie of all time. And I would imagine that it is 100% responsible for his worldview, at least when it comes to Asia.

Calvin Lindfors

Just to give context, a 60 round single elimination tournament isn't just more people than are alive on Earth, it's about 5000-10000 times the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy at approximately *1 QUINTILLION*, or 1000000000000000000 participants.

Busiris

Lowkey kinda love this movie. Between it and Kickboxer, it's the superior of the two. While this movie has the amazing tits of Bolo Yeung, Kickboxer has JCVD's friend Michel Qissi in yellow face as Tong Po (yeesh). I'm sure we'll hear more about it on the Kickboxermentary. Qissi is also one of the fighters in Bloodsport that gets bested by Yeung. Also, a soft recommend for the 2024 movie The Last Kumite. It's like The Expendables of shitty 80s karate movies. Not a great movie but Bolo's son David Yeung is in it and I thought he was pretty cool.

Matthew Lloyd

Was wondering if the guys were going to address the bullshit of the story and straight off the bat Chris Cabin, thank you.

Deitrich Tennin

Frank Dux once claimed he shattered bullet proof glass with a single punch...🤣🤣

Kevin dew

Excellent! 👍🏼

Matzar

Didn’t Cody from that sitcom Step by Step play in Blood Sport 2: Another Bloodsport? Btw, had my beautiful Michigan Starter jacket stolen, and the bow biters and Starter zipper were removed by the time I found it. I felt so rotten. I understand the allure for Michigan gear, Stephen.

An impromptu concert from Bosco Hogan

Is Invasion USA the movie where they straight blew up part of Atlanta because they were tearing it down to build the airport anyway?

Erin Hardy

It's me. I'm the other Interpol fan. 🤣

johnny stocker

If this movie had been released today, you would not have been able to convince me that Van Damme was a real person. I would've insisted that character had to have been AI generated.

Craig

I’m glad to hear Bloodsport is superior as I’ve seen it a million times and yet, despite being a teenage JCVD fan, never watched Kickboxer

Busiris

For what it's worth, Kickboxer is still a fun time, but I personally like it less. The sequels are also BAD but at the same time I think they're better than Bloodsport's sequels. In order words, Bloodsport is the better movie but Kickboxer has the better sequels (but again, that isn't saying much, lol).

Billie Jackson

He did several of them. And the guy from Future War, that one episode of Barry and Santa's Summer House inherited JCVD's Kickboxer sequels. I think that both actors did three sequels to those previously standalone Van Damme movies.

Matthew Lloyd

Looking forward to taking part in one of America's greatest and underappreciated pass times, making shit up to get a film and/or book deal or somehow training their army and police force.

Rob Brown

Every Best Buy I have been to has abandoned physical movies in the last two years. Even before that, my local Best Buy seemed to intentionally not put out new stuff to the shelves. Like, on the website, it would say they had something, I would go to the store and not see it, and then I would ask for it, and somebody would say something like “Oh, they were still in the back, somebody must not have put them out”. When TITANIC came out on 4K, they neglected to put it out?

RJ Cunningham

Hossein is the single least honorable fighter I've ever seen

Dan sulin

The compilation DVD disk sets of mostly white guy karate movies still exist but the main outlet you find the at are Truck stops, Walmarts and Dollar stores/$5 below discount places. Honestly not sure if they are new stock or just that they printed billions of those damn things back in the day. They are also the type of disc that is gonna suffer disc rot really quick. I got a lot of 70s Kung Fu movies that way and sadly many have stopped working. I’m sad because only about it half of them I managed to rip to files for my Plex server and some of these were obscure as hell gems.

Dan sulin

If you are bored and doomed scrolling one night, looking up all the fine folks on YouTube who have compiled Frank Dux bullshit stories and disproved them is a lot of fun. They guy is what happens when that kid from school who claims to have the Mortal Kombat nude code grows up but never learns to stop the bullshit.

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Having Fargo Sex

Does anybody remember when Zack Snyder threatened us with a Revolutionary War movie 300 style? That's the closest we can get to an founding fathers fighting game.

J. Whiteneck, Esq

Bloodfist is s movie. Actually a series of like 8 or 9 movies starring Don "The Dragon" Wilson.

Craig

For Australian listeners interested in the action film Chris mentioned, Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, it’s currently available for free on SBS On Demand!

Nick Gupton

Might as well have called "All Fours Guy" Diddy Kong instead. Seriously just a blatantly racist caricature of an African fighter. He doesn't stand upright the whole movie. He just jumps around and drags his knuckles like an ape. I shudder to think what direction the actor was given to elicit such a nuanced, sensitive performance.

Alex Klopfenstein

Back in the day I had the Boondock Saints/Fight Club two disc set. Which honestly should have immediately put me on some sort of list.

Christopher Oxentine

I still have my Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Golden Gophers starter jackets from 1989

profondo robbo

Something I clocked on this viewing is that the main Hong Kong police officer is played by the same guy who played Chow Yun-fat's boss in Hard Boiled.

imipolexGforce

OMG MUZZY. You guys triggered a shitload of memories dropping that bomb.

Daryl Williams

Yes. That's French they're speaking, but they aren't French, they're American.
