“Scott Adkins’ character has a short temper these days, what with the dead wife…” - Steve

On this week’s episode, “White Guy Karate” Month continues as we welcome in friend of the show, Brandon Streussnig to chat about the wild Scott Adkins martial arts sequel, Ninja: Shadow of Tear!

How awesome is all the kick-ass fight choreography in this? Should we be writing ninja characters named Casey? Do all movie villains know how to play chess? Why in the world were those guys sparring on a hardwood floor? Is this one of the best Adkins films to date? And who wants to smoke some drugs out of a lightbulb? PLUS: Come train with the WHM guys at the Massive Heart Attack dojo!

Ninja: Shadow of a Tear stars Scott Adkins, Kane Kosugi, Mika Hijii, Vithaya Pansringarm, Mukesh S. Bhatt, Charlie Ruedpokanon, Kazi Patrick Tang, and Shun Sugata as Goro; directed by Isaac Florentine.

I had a contrarian moment because I found myself liking the first Ninja movie more than the 2nd one when I first saw these movies a few years ago but ONLY because we're doing a lot more silly ninja stuff in that one than we are here and that's what I wanted. Upon rewatch, I found myself liking this movie more just because I think I've grown to appreciate the incredible fight choreography a lot more now. I mentioned it in the Patreon chat but another thing I like here is Kane Kosugi. No, he's definitely not a bigger name than his dad in the US but he definitely has made a much bigger name for himself in Japanese TV. Love the guy.

Eric: they wouldn't be making cocaine. Burma is along with Laos and Cambodia and others known as the golden triangle for their heroin production. They were strictly in the heroin trade, but most of that trade is now from Afghanistan (90% plus)

+1 for Universal Soldier : Day of Reckoning. A DTV legacy sequel with great gritty MMA action, Dolph Lundgren and JCVD. And yet it’s also very much in the style of Gaspar Nōe. It is quite the thing.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is very good

James C Harris

Kane Kosugi is well known in Japan. He was in "Cat's Eye" and Ninja Black Jiraiya on Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (which got used as the Alien Rangers in the Power Rangers. Kakuranger was my favorite Sentai and what was done to it is a crim4)

Shit, are you guys selling me on watching the first one? lol - Andrew

All I can say is that there's a lot more ninja-ing and that's what I wanted to see! In my opinion it's, for better or worse, sort of like a modern Cannon Films ninja movie.

Billie Jackson

The Reacher guy was also in the first two seasons of that pretty terrible Titans live action series. As a regular human (despite his big beefy boy physicality), he's always struggling to recover from fights, popping pain killers and generally seeming like he is in a superhero version of North Dallas 40, unlike all the other characters. Like some shady team doctor is going to come in and give him cortisone shots in his knees before they send him back out there. Titans is the show for anyone who wanted to see a weeping Bruce Wayne douse himself in gasoline and attempt self immolation in a European castle.

Amazon's captions and subtitles are always terrible, but this was truly a new low. Just "[japanese]" [sic] and "[inaudible]" in every other line. I would not have gotten away with that shit back in my transcriptionist days, no sir!! and btw I will not tolerate Redbox slander, that trash service saved my life during COVID 🥴

Avengement is thoroughly stupid, but it's so watchable and fun

Jason

Since Steve mentioned the Hart dungeon, it made me think wrestling with shadows would be an interesting doc for them to cover

Matthew Lloyd

The only Scott Adams films i have seen are universal soldier: day of reckoning and some boring one where terrorists take over Heathrow or something.

I feel like I need to re-listen in part to write down properly all the recommended films

Comrade Trash Panda

"Gaijin" is also the title of the sequel to Shogun. It takes place 260 years after the events of Shogun and follows Blackthorne's descendants. Excellent novel

Chris

I checked out Righting Wrongs based on the discussion here and that movie is DARK. It's also fucking awesome

Jonathan D Lackey

lol at the "why are there ad breaks built into the structure" leading to the ad pause here

Craig

Scott Adams in Universal Soldier? Is he fighting the “woke”? 😉

I’m sure the guest guy is very nice but he’s not very funny. The The guys, however, managed to make what he says funny by spinning it and just going along with it which I’m sure they knew what they were doing and so to the guy that was the guest I think you’re moving knowledge is great in your story is great, but you definitely weren’t catching on when they were trying to do some funny stuff lol

Holt Rowley

With my last comment, I wanted to make sure that there’s no disrespect of the guest. He just seemed like he wasn’t as funny as the guys or some of the other guests they have brought on, but he still did awesome and I liked his more like serious take sides of things. On a note with the movie, I will say anybody that’s going through this wondering if they should watch any of his other movies I 100% agree you should. Now be warned you are going into. SA movies are what you’re gonna get. There are definitely lower ones on the totem pole and there are higher ones on the totem pole but if you can kind of go in with the main state of, I’m going in for a lower budget action movie with a guy who actually knows what he’s doing when it comes to fighting. You can actually have yourself a good time. If you’re going in expecting the big blockbuster or even just movies that have better quality of things, etc. I will just advise. Don’t be so harsh. They do some really cool things, especially in some of the movies that look amazing and the fight choreography is awesome. Like movies like this and then movies like in my opinion Avengement are just fantastic. And in fact, I would say if you’re into this turn on one of these movies like when you’re watching a movie before you go to bed and just need something to kinda entertain yourself a lot of these movies I will turn on when I’m kind of doing something else if I don’t know what it is because I don’t wanna waste two hours if it’s bad and then I usually find myself either watching it or I find myself just watching action scenes and then you can kinda put together which ones are the good ones and which ones are the bad ones. But I will say the ratings when you try to look up online are all over the map. I feel like there’s a few that are higher on the list usually but the others are so scattered and who likes what etc. I would maybe start with some of the recommended ones and then maybe jump and dabble with some of the other ones cause he has some really good ones that definitely don’t get as much credit as they should. The only one I’ll say that I recently just watched. I didn’t like as much as I remembered was accident man but I’ve been told that accident man two is better cause they take the premise and they actually stick with it where the first one they kinda don’t, but I don’t know. Just watch them for yourselves.
