“These Country Bears… they busted through that ceiling!” - Chris

On this week’s episode, we’re kicking off Listener Request Month 2026 with a banger convo about the totally insane Disney animatronic nightmare film, The Country Bears!

Why couldn’t these bears have some different personalities from one another? Did Beary’s parents just steal a bear cub from the woods? Was Willie Nelson paid in weed? Why couldn’t we get more Stephen Tobolowsky in this movie? And how many of these bears are hooked on honey? PLUS: Rest in Peace, Country Bears’ original drummer, Toots!

The Country Bears stars Christopher Walken, Stephen Tobolowsky, Daryl Mitchell, Diedrich Bader, M.C. Gainey, Alex Rocco, Queen Latifah, and the voices of Diedrich Bader, Haley Joel Osment, Candy Ford, James Gannon, Toby Huss, Kevin Michael Richardson, Stephen Root and Brad Garrett as Fred Bedderhead; directed by Peter Hastings.

Truly one of Chistopher Walken's greatest performances. "This is not over....BEARS!"

Luke Gordnier

Best listener request call holy shit. Rip Nathen from Saint Paul, glad your dying request was granted.

Paul

Chris Cabin always has to be the contrarian—even saying the movie isn’t that bad. 😂

Busiris

Oh a perfect example of one of my favorite things I've heard Andrew do on the show a few times after an Eric comment that makes me laugh every time. 😂 Eric: "Picture a bear coming out of a human birth canal for a moment." Andrew, not missing a beat: "Nope."

Steve Bunnell

Bringing up "Twins" made me realize how much we need a sequel (or remake?) of that movie where both Ahnold and DeVito are bears. "Look at me, I am a bear! Und look at Danny - HE IS ALSO A BEAR!"

Eren Keskin

There's always that one guy that yells, "Freebear!"

Kate G

R.I.P.D Nathan

Robin Fry

Disney’s first suicide actually happens in 1985’s The Black Cauldron. I kid you not

WarOfTheBees

Absolute INSANITY that human bear John Goodman wasn't voicing one of these bears

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Having Fargo Sex

Following their successful 2002 reunion, The Country Bears faced backlash from their fan base over their criticism of the war in Iraq in 2003. The now just go by "The Bears".

Dan sulin

First off, make Steve watch Blues Brothers! It’s odd for me that he hasn’t seen it but I grew up in Chicago and I’m fairly certain seeing it is a requirement for graduating highschool. Also the Country Bears should have been chased by Illinois Nazis

stephen sammartino

I’m ashamed to say…my brother and I saw this in theaters growing up. No wonder we are so fucked up lol

Matt

Remember that time the Biker Mice From Mars killed that guy in the crowd while The Country Bears played "Gimme Shelter"

Smaug

The dad suffering at Disney bit reminds me of the Pirates eps where there was much discussion about the purpose of the Pirates ride. It is also as a dark, air conditioned space you sat in for 10 min when you needed to chill and listen to Geoffrey Rush yell at you from a baller ship set.

Ed Harris

Love it when you guys tackle a crappy early aughts film. Its like you kick it into another gear.

Infinite Terror

Don Was has a great episode of Maron and was also in the band Was (Not Was), who had a single hit: Walk The Dinosaur.

Conor K

If you want to see Levon Helm in a artistically hollow movie role, look no further than the bizarrely watchable Fire Down Below. Steven seagal fights a cadre of villains made up of Nashville country music stars.

TJ Gaines

As I recently visited Disney World’s Magic Kingdom with my family, the Country Bears Exhibit was a MUST needed rest stop after standing an hour for Haunted Mansion and 45 minutes for Small World.

TJ Gaines

As a father that just completed the Disney experience this episode hit really hard and really close to home.

Jessica M

Exhausted Grampy at Disney is my new favorite WHM character

RJ Cunningham

The Eastern-Conference All-Star Team better have 4 of the WHM crew starting next year. 20 minutes into the movie and I think I might be on Cabin's side..... The breakfast scene with Tobo got a sincere laugh, with his tie story.

RJ Cunningham

About to start the episode and this made me cackle

RJ Cunningham

WOW imagine getting to watch Blues Brothers for the first time. I've seen it 10+ times and was too young to remember the first viewing, but always remembered Belushi's delivery of "no fucking way," to Akroyd about visiting the Penguin

RJ Cunningham

Also anyone think of the Simpsons before Godfather for Alex Rocco? First time watching Godfather Part 2, his voice stands out so much for a kid raised on Simpsons

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

I saw it once, well over a decade ago, on a YMCA coach bus headed to Jay Peak from Montreal. I barely remember any of it, definitely due for a rewatch. I've also seen Save the Last Dance no fewer than 3 times, in the exact same setting, due to that tape being one of the few that stayed on the bus at all times.

Kevin Lynch

I think Blues Brothers might make a better WLM Commentary. Movies Steve has never seen make for some of the best commentaries

AJ

You guys really had me going today with your walken impressions. Thank you 🙏🏻

Meggy

The intro with Nathan I’m already laughing

D Arthur

I hope Nathan is feeling better & goes to the Minneapolis show. He’s a WHM legend now 😭

Robert

This is one of those movies that feels like a fever dream and you’re not sure if it actually exists

Jason

Halfway through I couldn’t stop an intrusive thought about what the WHM podcast would be in the country bear-verse. I think I settled on human Eric, Andrew, and Chris with Steve being like an anthropomorphic Red Panda.

Jules of Denial

Let Nathan program a month every year, Nathan’s Never-Saw November

Matzar

2002?!? Jeez

I.C. Weiner

As a Disney freak (in comparison to you guys, not to the typical Disney freak) there were a few things that I wanted to say, but instead I will stick to the one that will make you happiest: the Country Bears attraction hasn't existed at Disneyland for quite some time, it was replaced with a Winnie the Pooh ride, but, as tribute to the Country Bears they have one of the bears heads mounted on a wall

Dennis Stack

All day I dream about salmon really fuckin got me! 😂🤣😂

Melissa Benjamin

I saw the Country Bears at Disney back in like 1988. When the movie came out I bought it for my 2 yr old son, on DVD. Watched it once then gave it away. Lol. The funniest thing is that I didn’t remember a thing about it, and when you said Diedrich Bader my mind immediately went to Dieter Laser and now I can’t stop thinking about Dr. Heiter chasing them around so he can try to make a Bearipede. Honestly, better movie.

Jonathan Lyons

I am constantly surprised by what Chris likes. Truly eclectic. Dont know what seizures have to do with it, But I've seen other people use that word and that might be how I learned to read

Kate

Say what you will about this movie, given how short it is, I think it’s worth it to watch Walken’s very strange and funny performance… or at least to fast forward to those scenes??

Ben Sharpe

Imagine a Bearstein Bears movie with amniatronics

John Kerstetter

Country Bears was my dad's favorite thing at Disney because it was just dumb and silly. RIP Dad
