“It’s kind of a dirty movie…I was trying to imagine Travis Bickle taking a date to this” - Eric

On this month’s patron-requested We ❤️ Movies, we’re chatting about a real foundational flick for the four of us, Kevin Smith’s Clerks!

How many VHS tapes did Chris Cabin’s house go through with this movie? How uncomfortable is it to say “View Askew-niverse” out loud? How hysterical is that funeral parlor cut? Could we bring Clerks to Broadway as a musical? And was the age of 11 too young for Steve to have seen this movie for the first time? PLUS: Michael Caine explains snowballing!

Clerks stars Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Lisa Spoonauer, Jason Mewes, Scott Mosier, and Kevin Smith as Silent Bob; directed by Kevin Smith.

We hope you are enjoying We ❤️ Movies! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon supporter that you are. You help keep the lights on around the old clubhouse and us on the air. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you chose to spend some time with us!

Oscar Gutierrez

Truly one of my top 10 films. I can watch it over and over again. A masterpiece.

Jonathan D Lackey

Something I requested a few times for WLM but I didn't actually send it in this year. Finally!

Andrew Orman

The most formative movie of my lifetime. I’ve watched it no less than a 100 times. I’ve never been so excited to listen to an episode.

Comrade Trash Panda

Oh boy its my turn to be the guy: The motorcycle belongs to Dante's dad. His dad is like a wife beater wearing chain smoking scumbag. "Give those mole-people hell son!" Yes, that is supposed to be the same Wilem from Mallrats

Josh

Watched this a couple years ago for the first time when I was 27. Other than capturing a feeling of quarter-life malaise unfortunately this movie did nothing for me. Guess it's just a generational thing.

Dylan Sludge

Waking up to this notification was like an angel's kiss. Now onto the best Kevin Smith project ever: Clerks Animated !!!

Emil Svensson

I'll never quite understand how 25 became "quarter-life". In some industrialised countries 20 could be a decent approximation of quarter-life, at least for women who live longer than men. I guess 25 x 4 equals a big, nice, round number, but I have faith in people's ability to count in intervals of 20 as well.

Emil Svensson

I don't really think there's much room for dancing around whether QT is a horrible, indefensible human being or not, seeing as how he defended Polanski's child r*pe publically and explicitly. "I don’t believe it’s r*pe, not at 13, not for these 13-year-old party girls" "she wanted to have it" EDIT: Since I don't want to be a hypocrite and I dislike when people don't provide sources, it was a 2003 Howard Stern radio interview.

John Locke

It's Hollywood baby.

John Locke

Definitely a generational thing. I was 17 when it came out and we watched this a ton in college. Multiple times a week. We used to sit around reciting the movie from start to finish when we weren't watching it.

Sarah Montgomery

It's just a reference to the mid-life crisis that hits people in their 40s. People at 20 are usually not really adults, they may still be in school or living with their parents. Quarter-life crises is when they get out on their own for the first time and start to realize the difficulty and frustrations that life throws at them, in ways nobody prepared them for. Kids are raised to believe they can be anything they want, and most realize, once they're (young) adults that that's a fantasy. So now what do they do? For Dante and Randall, they have jobs, they have independence, they have (a little) money, girlfriends. But now what? Just stay where they are? Their jobs are just jobs, not careers. Do they want to be doing this forever (according to Clerks 2 and 3, perhaps)? But they could easily draw a straight line from high school to where they are in the first film, but where do they want to go, and how the hell are they supposed to get there?

An impromptu concert from Bosco Hogan

I absolutely have weird conversations at work because of this movie. One day we considered the funniest animal head that could be on a human body (sea horse), or what is in fact the most fuckable pie (I don't know, something meringue. Definitely not apple.)

Peter Reynoso

I think red state might be his best directed movie. I remember the action beibg directed well and camera movement.

Jason

I think the thing I can say most positively about Clerks is that it’s one of the best in genre of “fucking around at work” movies. It was also novel for focusing on the rank and file worker as opposed to a manger/boss like Used Cars. It wasn’t the first, of course, but spawned a lot of copy cats in its wake during the 90s and early aughts.

Bryn

That was a fantastic episode. I think when you all actually end up watching Navy Seals, it will be an emergency episode situation

Frank Grimes

not 100% sure if Cabin was being sarcastic when he called Logic the white rapper, but I am 100% for it, since I have a heavy disdain for logic.

Matt

It feels like every day I learn something new about QT that makes me think he sucks as a person a little bit more

Rod

The Animated Series is such a gem that never got enough love

TJ Gaines

“My girlfriend’s sucked 37 dicks!” “In a row?”

ShamusMcc

I grew up and still live in Leonardo. The old guy who leaves his keys in the store was my neighbor. He was a miserable asshole. My brother and I called him Toucan Stan. Shocked at how much discussion he has gotten in the ep.

Billie Jackson

I've known a couple of people who worked in adult video, toys, etc. stores and jizz mopping is indeed part of the clerking job.

Matt

"That's what I love about hockey freaks, they don't care what they look like" I feel so seen.

johnny stocker

Back when they did the animated series they actually did animate the funeral scene as it was originally written, pretty sure it's up on youtube.

Jonathan Lyons

We know, logic. You don't need an alt account. You are respected and admired, logic. Come on, buddy, logic. Be your namesake for once! LOGIC. BUDDY.

Jonathan Lyons

Sorry. I couldnt resist the dumb joke. I tried. I really did

B R

This was one of my first "What are YOU watchin!?" Movie experiences. I didn't know anything about it besides it was a Kevin Smith movie and put it on one day when I was home sick from school. My mom was....less than thrilled with the dialogue.

2bithacker

Around 26:30, talking about protein shakes/milk shakes, reminds me of the recent Bobby Holmes protein powder scandal where it turned out the "protein powder" was just cake mix :D

jribs

There should be a term for what Steve did with Clerks because I did the same thing around the same age with Memento. Watched it. Immediately re-watched it.

Tyler The Destroyer

Tried dialing every number area code I could think of for New Jersey for the phone number over the quick stuff to see what would happen Sadly, a bunch of busy signals and not in service lol

Tyler The Destroyer

I really want the guys to cover clerks three so badly because it’s so bad but in a way that it would be fun to talk about why it’s bad I still can hear the line from Randall in that movie that just makes me so fucking mad “ I’ve done nothing with my life, so what I co-own a convenience store” And I’m like “ dude! You made it! You’re a fucking business owner” And Dante putting his face in his hands like he is a wage jockey I’m sorry, but you don’t get to go through the existential fucking crisis of “this is my life” when you own the fucking business

Chris

I was a tad disappointed they didn’t touch on Red State since it’s such an outlier in the Kevin Smith ouvre and while I don’t think it’s a particularly good movie, I do think it’s interesting

Chris

Listening to this while sitting next to my framed, hand drawn Clerks movie poster. This movie came out when I was a teenager working at a convenience store (White Hen Pantry RIP) with my two best friends and it became our gospel

Peter Reynoso

Saw it in the theater. I actually have fun with tusk. I think red state is well directed.

Mike Kling

Scream 3 is my favorite Jay & Silent Bob cameo.

James Marron

Hello, “man-of-few-words” James here. Funnily enough it is James from Jersey! Not Highlands, but close enough in Trenton, NJ. To supplement what the movie meant to me: I was a MASSIVE Kevin Smith fan and he was probably my first favorite director when I was able to start watching R-rated movies in the 7th grade. I was introduced with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which (as an impressionable pre-teen in the early 00s), was the peak of cinematic comedy. From there I grew more mature and I started watching many other better films. Among them were other Kevin Smith movies that existed at that time and Clerks clearly stood out and to me was truly a film that evoked a lasting impression on me. Clerks became the first basis of comparison that I had for comparing other ACTUALLY good movies I would see thenceforth. Kevin Smith still remains a personal favorite of mine for showing me such a good film in my formative film-watching years. I hope this prose was flowery enough for you, Eric. Love you guys. Keep up the great work - James

Ryan Horn

And there was a comic book before that of “the lost scene”

Aaron

https://grandesunrisewsp.com/ was a neighborhood favorite that moved to st. Paul https://www.elburritomercado.com/ is a St. Paul institution https://laloma.com/menus/ is on lake st and is a morning must if you love tamales. Maybe ICE has messed with its hours? I'll check. https://taqueriaslahacienda.com/#dipipopup-600#popup_on_load solid tacos with many locations https://www.boludo.com/ for empanadas and pizza I'll add more or maybe someone with better taste will hop in and correct my dumb ass.

Tyler The Destroyer

I need more Chris cabin stories about his very colorful family

We Hate Movies

It’s tough because we don’t want to just sit there and go through all his movies, even though I think we accidentally came pretty close, but I dig on Red State. - Andrew

Tim O'

When I was in college, I thought this, Fear & Loathing, and Dazed & Confused were the three most thoughtful and intelligent movies I'd ever seen. I was pretentious, but I had good weed.

jribs

Shame on Steve for shaming the locos tacos! He’s loco (crazy)!

Tim O'

In 1970s cocaine cinema classic Night of the Juggler, I'm pretty sure James Brolin fights a jizz mopper while he tries to pester a go-go dancer in a peep show theater.

Rob Brown

Has anyone else watched the documentary Chasing Chasing Amy? I caught it a couple months ago on Prime, and it’s pretty great. It also unexpectedly gets into the Weinstein stuff.

Jonathan Lyons

And I just stole your identity. Dumb dumb dumb another one bites the dust. Fun fsct: my last victim was named Jonathan

James Marron

“If you plan on stealing my identity, let me know.” And you did! So thank you, Jonathan. Or should I call you James? 😉

Z

The "Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season" bit in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is still hilarious, especially when it cuts to Gus Van Sant just counting the piles of money and not even bothering to direct the scene.

Anthony Ryan

I don’t know if Logic is respected or admired (at least his music) but the one thing I know for sure about Logic is that he isn’t white. (This whole thread is going to look so weird for people outside of the hip hop space)

Anthony Ryan

I didn’t think about it being an expert level troll. If so, bravo!

Adam Ray

That original ending was something else. ESPECIALLY cutting to credits with absolute silence. It made the entire movie suddenly feel "student film".

Tru$tn01

My old man made a wall of tapea after getting a vcr and taping EVERYTHING. My fave was the triple threat of Follow that Bird, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and Commando.

Dan sulin

I think Clerk really resonates to anyone who worked retail. It’s the kinda job where it can be hour until someone shows up and it can be so boring. You make friends with the guy at the store Nextdoor. You make fun of the regulars. You talk about jizz and Star Wars. When this came out I was a teenager working at Babbages(the software stores that eventually became Gamestop). And I got stories for days about the weirdos and the stupid shit we did. No one died but I’d did see a kid get so excited about an Nintendo 64 that he vomitted on the display box.

Dan sulin

Yeah it felt like it was trying to be profound for the sake of it. To be fair the actual ending isn’t that great either. Clerks is a movie that just kinda has to end because it don’t really go anywhere or say anything anyways.

Dan sulin

RIP The Dawson. He should have drowned Pacey in that Creek.

We Hate Movies

Well, not for nothing, Tim, but those three movies ARE thoughtful and intelligent. You had good taste! - Andrew

Jonathan Lyons

Oh please. James was my father. Call me Eric. My last name will be hard to spell.

Jonathan Lyons

Hey. I might not, but someone does. Somewhere. That mythical person exists. Photos of them are like Bigfoot or lochness or my dad. But they are there!

Jonathan Lyons

Is that the one with the clips show for the first episode as the second episode? A meta marvel before stuff like that was everywhere

Rod

What a great fucking gag. And the ending of the courtroom episode, where they lose the script in transit to the Korean animators so they just finished it as an anime basically. BIG AMERICAN PARTY!

JK

Did he say "making fuck"?

Richard Buttry

The old guy with the fluorescent lights. I say “hit by a bus” nearly everyday since 1995.

Jonathan Lyons

Babbages ref? That's an old reference- oh no. Oh god. No. Time, you cruel bitch

Paul Jenner

“Who’s driving? Oh no, Bear is driving! How can that be?!” was used a LOT driving around with pals in my late teens…

Paul Jenner

I’ll hopefully make Steve feel a little better - on my (only) trip to L.A from Australia many moons ago I had a photo taken outside of the Smodcastle.

Ryan Horn

Yeah. One line. Very brief. But I can see him riding a motorcycle.

Ryan Horn

Got to meet Brian at a con recently and I told him how I watched the cartoon when it originally aired on ABC. He said maybe only 30 people have told him that over the years.

Rod

Which is so crazy because it’s legit his best work probably

Rod

“Bear is driving” has been in my lexicon for far too long

Dan sulin

You have no idea. We just got the information about my son’s high school graduation in May. I felt like I aged ten years just reading it.

GeekMaladroit .

Perfect timing for Criterion Channel to have this on this month along with WHM. As a ‘94 baby who isn’t a Kevin Smith guy, even I have to admit that this is a great first effort and probably the best thing he’s done. Excited to get into this episode.

Christopher Oxentine

I owned and operated s sporting apparel store 94-2000. This was required viewing for my employees. The licensing agreements for these teams was completely different.

KevinSF

As an elder millennial myself I really relate to the total love for this movie with the constant pull back that Smith hasn’t made the best stuff overall. Haven’t seen it in over two decades. Felt like you guys were saying the best lines as they were popping back into my head.

Darcy MacDonald

Next year I'm writing a fucking "Dear Casey" WLM request email

Ray

I watched this movie when I was like 14 on starz of all platforms.

jribs

Jesus Ben, I said I’m busy….very busy….

Robert Ippolito

Some time ago my Dad, who was born in Leonardo NJ, found out this movie was shot in that area. Asked if he could borrow it, I told him he wouldn’t like it. Pretty sure he turned it off during the snowball scene and it was never discussed again.
