“It was only a matter of time before we drew this out of a hat…” - Andrew

On this week’s episode, Listener Request Month heads to deep space as we talk about the legendary sci-fi failure, Supernova!

How many Academy Award-nominees does it take to fix a big-budget nightmare? Is this the horniest studio science fiction film? Is Robert Forster’s character getting a doctorate in cartoon studies? Why couldn't we get more Spader tooling around that mining operation? What's that orb's deal, really? Despite it all, these are some pretty good ship and space effects. And how many studio executives can you cram into one on-set writing trailer? PLUS: The return of the VHS Trailer Game!

Supernova stars James Spader, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Lou Diamond Phillips, Peter Facinelli, Robin Tunney, Wilson Cruz, and Vanessa Marshall as the voice of Sweetie; directed by “Thomas Lee.”

Been waiting a long time for you guys to cover this train wreck. Maybe one day we'll finally figure out who really directed this.

Paul

“This is Eric Szyszka for Semenax—I love bountiful loads...”

Evan

They DID use that "woo hoo" song for the old Starship Troopers tv spots. Vivid childhood memory 😅

Tony King

It was crazy how horny this film was! I was not expecting that.

Darryl Bowen

I thought James Spader was responsible for the pod mess up in the start but there was never a reveal for that. I have a false memory of when Karl and Danika do it that he absorbs her into him and that it's revealed he's the devil or some alien demon possessing the body. Clearly I remember a slightly more interesting movie from when I saw it in theaters back then. When I was doing the rewatch I also was thinking of the Jamie Lee Curtis movie Virus. Couldn't recall if it had anything worth a damn about it.

Ray

This movie is incoherent 😂 also, MIKE DEXTER

WarOfTheBees

(Obi-Wan voice) Robin Tunney? Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

Comrade Trash Panda

I saw this movie in the theaters....with my MOM. We had no clue it was going to be that horny. So on top of being so confused at the mess of a plot, I'm also mortified to be watching, sitting in a dark theater next to my mom. Afterward the only thing my mom said was "that made no sense, you can't get an erection in zero gravity"

Kevin Lynch

I always get this movie mixed up with the equally bad Solar Crisis

Jonnie Sea

I remember seeing this trailer in front of everything in 1999…if I’m not mistaken this movie does have the distinction of being the first “big” movie of the 21st century….in terms of budget and when it was released

TJ Gaines

“Mike Dexter is a God!”

Jonnie Sea

OMG…I’m the asshole yelling Titan A.E. as if they can hear me! Can you take me hiiiiiiigher!!!!!

Damon LeCornu

"I'm allegedly sorry." Thanks Eric! I am stealing this!

Paul

LDP is really good in “The Chair Company.”

Rose Esposito

HOORAY VHSTG, but no Boston Legal questions?!?

Busiris

If there's any good this movie did for me after watching it, it's that it made me want to re-watch the wildly superior Danny Boyle movie "Sunshine".

Matthew Kennedy

I love VHS Trailer Game, any instance is a win for my day

RJ Cunningham

Wait why was FFC so invested in this sack of shit?

Z

He was an MGM board member at the time.

Z

If you thought the one-two punch of Sugar Ray and Three Dog Night being used in this film's trailers was nuts, you really need to check out the trailer for Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys, which prominently features an *NSYNC song. The 2000s were the wild west for this kind of stuff.

Jason

Steve doing an impression: “It’s me Christahper Lahmbherr, and I was in Highlander. Sean Cahnnery made fun of my weak loahds. Now with Semenax, nahbady makes fun of my loahds.”

Chris

Digitally darkening a white actress’s skin to make a deep fake sex scene using a superimposed black actress’s face (who didn’t consent?) is the kind of decision that would require a senate hearing if it happened in the 2020s

Amanda P

I’m 10 mins into this movie and I’m going to hurl. What’s with the camera tilts?

Jason

In space, no one can feel you nut.

Conrad Silas

"Minge," Andrew? First time I've heard it coming from a non-Brit. Bravo!

Todd B

I still have memories of a TV spot for Gladiator using, of all things, Bawitdaba.

Smaug

Goddamn, James Spader aged 20 years in the 11 years between this movie and The Office

Lisa Ryan

lol at the end of that Futurama episode I said “That’s it!” And I refused to watch the show ever again. My sister told me they fixed the thing with the dog but i will never forgive them. I will not watch it to this day. I hold grudge.

James Bergquist

the best part of the re-edits: the sex scene between Angela Bassett and James Spader was re-edited from a sex scene between Robin Tunney and Peter Facinelli with them "darkening" Tunney's skin in the editing process.

Ray

I love bountiful loads

Ray

They mentioned that

Justin Warren

I love nobody picking up Eric's JOI joke - I laughed
