On this month's very special supporter-curated edition of The Nexus, we're chatting about two of the best episodes both DS9 and TNG ever created!

First up on Deep Space Nine, it's the heavy-ass episode, "Duet"! Originally airing back on June 16, 1993, this is the legendary episode where Major Kira grapples with whether or not an ill Cardassian that boards DS9—an excellent guest appearance by the late, great Harris Yulin—is actually a war criminal that worked at a Cardassian labor camp she liberated. It's some of the best acting Nana Visitor got to do as Kira and the scenes between her and Harris Yulin are excellent. This episode remains atop fans' Best Of Trek lists for a reason.

Then across the Alpha Quadrant on TNG, we're talking about another total all-timer, "The Inner Light." Premiering May 30, 1992, this is the episode where Picard is scanned with a probe and then wakes up as a completely different person on a distant planet. Is he actually Captain Jean-Luc Picard? Or is he really Kamin, this small village's respected elder/scientist? This truly is some of the best acting Patrick Stewart got to do as Picard on this show through all seven seasons, four movies, and all three seasons of Picard. A really important and special Trek moment here!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

I remember seeing The Inner Light when it first aired and it blew my tiny, teenage mind. That said, Duet might be better. I had no idea they shared a writer. I might need to seek out any others he wrote.

John Locke

Been waiting years for y'all to do Inner Light. A truly stunning episode.

Tim Batson

It's a whole thing about the digital quality of DS9 and how paramount will not spend a single penny to update it. There are fan made 720p upscales out there that help.

Jules of Denial

Two perfect eps, but Inner Light is arguably my favorite hour of television ever.

Jules of Denial

Inner Light is Star Trek at its absolute best and a Patrick Stewart masterclass.

WarOfTheBees

Darhewl having a state funeral makes a lot more sense when you consider our regime had a stadium funeral for a podcaster

WarOfTheBees

Fun fact about being named "Daniels:" When I turned 21 I "had" to do 21 shots of Jack Daniels. That was a night to not remember.

Paul

Worf inside the simulation: “You’re not real - 👊🏿, you’re not real - 👊🏿, you’re not real - 👊🏿, you’re Richard Riehle - 👊🏿.”

Felipe Sobreiro

I've requested this DS9 episode several times!

Christine J

On a Star Trek podcast, Armin Shimmerman shared a behind the scenes fact. DS9 writers would include a scene for the characters so that the actors could collect residuals for that episode. So Colm Meaney may still get 6 cent cheques for “Duet” all of these years later. That is my useless fact for the day.

Benjamin Fowler

Behind the scenes of DS9: Harris Yulin loved the character and the vibe of DS9 cast and crew so much he advocated for the character to live. He wanted to be a recurring character on DS9.

John D.

Great discussion of some of my favorite episodes of both shows. Duet would make an interesting stage play.

Winson Paine

I am the worst trek fan in some ways so I offer this as a kind of sacrifice to the WHM crew for forgiving their relentless DS9 bad takes. I have never liked Inner Light, it is great work by Stewart but I am unable to give a shit about an admittedly well done "lol it was a dream" ep

Winson Paine

My wife got me the Voyager DVDs which are wretched transfers and somehow it is kind of making the experience better

Michael Nigrey

Kalshi bets if Eric says “Grampies”.

Brent Cowan

Nows I can bet on Steve’s wellbeing, from home in my underwears!

Jason

It was nice of your friends to celebrate your birthday with an attempted murder

Matthew Taylor

What a tour de force for Peter Allen Fields. As you also noted these are on the shortest lists of best episodes of their respective series. I love Richard Riehl and he does good work here but Harris Yulin delivers one of the best guest starring performances of the entire franchise. Oddly enough, one of the other spotlight performances by a guest star is David Warner also as a Cardassian. Love the show, this was really a treat to get these two powerhouse episodes together.

Ah yes, Worf screaming his bad ideas into a ceremonial Klingon Murder Pillow, also known as a Q'RAT MACH! Also, funny enough I believe the Nexus is getting to Ensign Ro next month, which is one of my favorite eps of the series, and may be the introduction of Bajorans and Cardassians into the Trekaverse as far as I can remember.

Chris Vincenti

My goodness I will have to wear a suit and tie for this month's Nexus: these are two very classy episodes. From time to time, the flute that Patrick Stewart played in the episode is seen (and heard from, since I do recall him practicing it at least once) again.

Craig

Ro was originally supposed to be Kira and DS9 too, but the actress turned it down

RJ Cunningham

Gullah Gullah Island was glorious entertainment for youths of any age

johnny stocker

Oh yeah that's right, I definitely knew that at one point. Michelle Forbes was great in that role.

Convincing John

I keep hoping they'll do DS9 when it's over so a) I can keep hearing their Odo, Sisko and Quark voices and b) I wanna see them grow to love it

Convincing John

Am I insane that DS9 on Paramount+ looks just fine to me? I've seen the AI upscales and I appreciate them for being crisper and brighter but that's about the only difference I see. To be fair, my glasses are thick as fuck, no one could say my vision's great. In any case, very funny, great ep on two very moving episodes of television, loved it.

James C Harris

"Leaving Sku-El" made Dr. Pepper cone out my nose.

Billie Jackson

Dax did have that one murderer former host that Sisko is briefly possessed by in the episode featuring main cast hosting other Daxes. Horny old Curzon, Sisko's past friend really doesn't want to leave because there's no way to keep partying with Klingons if he returns to being dead. Unrelated, there's an attempt in the DS9 relaunch books to tie the Trill symbionts to the s1 TNG Conspiracy bugs, which seems ill advised.

Billie Jackson

In mid attempt to steal the Defiant.

Billie Jackson

I always confuse him with the father of Kira's Cardassian duplicate, simply because Yulin wanted to come back and the other guy does in an episode that mirrors this one in some ways.

Kate Shaw

Well it’s a bummer to find out my email clearly didn’t go through since I definitely requested inner light this year 😅
