“The idea that you’re gonna put Kilmer and Brando in the same movie and you expect this to go well...” - Steve

This week on WHM, Remake-ril boards a plane to fly to a mysterious destination in the South Pacific as the guys chat about one of the most notorious Hollywood disasters of the 1990s, John Frankenheimer’s The Island of Dr. Moreau!

Who on Earth thought it was a good idea to get Brando involved in this? Does our society really want monkey butlers? What was Kilmer smoking while filming this—no seriously, any strain info? How was this movie only PG-13 with all these horrific mon-stars? Why was mainstream pop culture kinda cool with a little light beastiality in the 1990s? And credit where credit’s due, Stan Winston hit it out of the park with the monster make-up. PLUS: The return of the VHS Trailer Game!

The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) stars David Thewlis, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Daniel Rigney, Temuera Morrison, Nelson de la Rosa, Mark Dacascos, Ron Perlman, Marco Hofschneider, and Marlon Brando as Dr. Moreau; directed by John Frankenheimer.

You know a movie is bad when you’re eight years old in 1996, excited to see a summer blockbuster in theaters with BATMAN, and you’re bored to tears. Being bored and spotting plot holes at 8 years old is less a sign of my early interest in filmmaking and more an indictment of just how impressively awful this movie was. Thirty years later, I never thought I’d have a reason to watch this wretched movie again. Thanks a lot, guys Best part of this movie was casting Fairuza Balk as half cat, because she literally requires no make up for that.

Massey and Graham

Wow, the Last Man Standing x Goldeneye mashup just sent me back 30 years. Remember wielding dual TT-30 Tokarevs and cosplaying as Bruce Willis’ character from that film

ManyPunchMan

If i want to see a good version of 'Island of Dr Moreau' before checking out the 1996 version should i watch the 1977 one?

Knut Farstad

Bruce Dern is also in Last Man Standing!

RJ Cunningham

Choosing the rugged, Java Sea faring-captain over Fairuza Balk without hesitation, is crazier than Moreau himself! And I don’t even find the captain that bad. I did find Fairuza Balk’s dancing pretty terrible though Also Temuera Morrison was terrifying in this. Guess the guys not the worst actor. Stan Winston literally made one of the most legendary production disasters ever into a watchable movie

Tim O'

The one from 1932 is only 70 minutes long and it's very good. (The '77 one might be great but I haven't seen it yet.)

RJ Cunningham

For some reason the amount of times Monkey Butler is being said, my mind starting humming Psycho Killer but with “monkey butler” instead Also Moreau won the Nobel for gene manipulation, which I think Kilmer’s velcro line is a joke about splicing two different things together….but Kilmer lunacy makes more sense. For someone actively sabotaging a movie, Kilmer’s innate ability leaks through. Insane talent but literally ended his career for all intents and purposes due to what he did on set

RJ Cunningham

Supposedly the Brando Ice Hate was due to…..covering his blowhole because he was a dolphin. That’s literally how Brando played it and wanted it revealed. No explanation for why there was not said blowhole in every other scene of the movie where he didn’t have the hat. Gotta admit I’m torn on Brando’s performance. Might be a Kilmer thing where talent is talent no matter what….but if Brando didn’t act exactly the same in real life it would have been a good performance Also Nelson De La Rosa literally played a similar role in real life, with Pedro Martinez being his real life Dr Moreau

Jason

I wonder how many donnybrooks would pop off between the brothers Jupin when the “no Oddjob” rule was broken?

Josh

Fairuza gives this an extra star.

MarkNM

Welp, that song's not getting out of my head til lunchtime.

Craig

The story hasn’t even started and we’re already into a long discussion about human animal hybrids and Eric suggesting a dog person needs to pick up their own poop. Gold.

James

Congrats to Andrew for one of the best moments in the history of the VHS Trailer Game.

Ben Sharpe

I saw this in the theatre The Simpsons did a better job at this

Watch_N_Rewatch

Last Man Standing Rules!! Loved watching that movie with Dad, the dual handguns blowing people away was so memorable. I've never seen Island of Dr.M, but there was a scene detailing the difficulties on set during the Val Kilmer Documentary and woof lol

Ben Sharpe

is it worth seeing the original?

Rose Esposito

I'm so happy we haven't forgotten about "Fraudney Dangerfield." ❤️🐈

John Halski

The existence of findagrave.com has me asking questions. Among them, was the internet a mistake?

Aaron Dowler

Not necessarily a monstar but Ron Perlman does play a hunchback with a deformed face in The Name of the Rose

WarOfTheBees

That Batman Animated series episode coupled with Fiona Appel's "Criminal" video made me into the degenerate man I am today

Matthew Lloyd

Im halfway through the episode (guys are talking about Louie Anderson), and i memory resurfaced, im pretty sure I read somewhere that Brando wanted to play Moreau as if he was part Dolphin.

Tyler The Destroyer

David Theulis on big mouth is incredible A lot of people do not like that show but it’s me and my wife’s big watches together He’s great as the shame wizard And yes Chris he’s very silly lol

Luke Witherell

I've woefully seen the remakes of Valley Girl, Fame, Papillon, and White Men Can't Jump, and I would've guessed Charade hahaha

Eren Keskin

This is the origin story of David Thewlis' werewolf character from Harry Potter

Busiris

Andrew re: the boat captain at the beginning: "Oh, dude, you see that little guy? I'd fucking split that guy in half." An absolute classic, lmao.

James Richie

Sharks. Sharks are the one animal that doesn’t get cancer.

Billie Jackson

In addition to Last Man Standing, there's the 1980s fantasy film remake of Yojimbo, The Warrior and the Sorceress starring David Carradine, which is available on Tubi rn.

Billie Jackson

It's the one people justifiably tend to overlook.

BBB

I usually don’t watch along with the main feed but for this one I had to make an exception. Holy shoot I’m glad I did. Val and Brando make it worth it. Kinda love this terrible terrible film.

NFlux Forever

If you can housetrain a dog and toilet-train a child, you can toilet-train a dog person. I'm just saying.

Frank Grimes

In the Val doc there’s a fun video after Val and Frankenheimer yell at each other he goes outside and Brando is chillin 😎 in a hammock and says “Gimme a push” and Val obliges Ron Peralman told a funny Brando story on WTF too

Ellis

I mostly remember Spy Kids 2 doing something similar

Craig

Were the scientists in Deep Blue Sea right all along?

Ronnie Gardocki

I am SO glad someone else remembered Pedro Martinez hanging out with that guy.

We Hate Movies

Oh, dude, the BATTLES over GoldenEye and Diddy Kong Racing... look out! - Andrew

Rose Esposito

On that note, I can point you to about 50,000 fanfics exploring that idea of Thewlis exuding raw sexuality.

Craig

This episode inspired me to listen to an audiobook of the original novel and it’s fantastic

coomer

Classic episode gentlemen!

DMAC

I'm Dom DeLuise laughing at "a huge fucking glass of nerds". And Mike and Ikes as medicine, is this why Rory Pinehead isn't getting better? He's eating Mike and Ikes?
