“He's big and hulking and terrifying, but he's also kind of a huge loser..." - Steve on Kylo Ren

On this edition of We ❤️ Movies, we’re heading back to a galaxy far, far away to chat about the great, yet divisive start to the Sequel Trilogy, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens!

How great is Harrison Ford in this movie? Wasn’t it about time Star Wars got a little bloodier? Wouldn’t we all want to sit down and have a drink at Maz’s sick bar? How do so many Star Wars people magically understand droid speak? And how much stolen valor is Kylo Ren working with here? PLUS: Be careful when you’re bringing your antique family collectibles onto The Lightsaber Roadshow on PBS!

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Max von Sydow, Peter Mathew, Gwendoline Christie, Jones Suotamo, Simon Pegg, and Harrison Ford as Han Solo; directed by JJ Abrams.

We hope you are enjoying We ❤️ Movies! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon supporter that you are. You help keep the lights on around the old clubhouse and us on the air. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you chose to spend some time with us!

I'm actually listening to the on screen right now before the episode and I just thought of the most succinct way to argue the angry neck beards that called Rey a Mary Sue. If any character is a Jedi, they're a Mary Sue. Thank you for your time.

Patrick caddy

Damn would I love Andrew's stinky little feet stepping on his Blu-ray collection in the new york summer. Yummers

Frank Grimes

damn, a muzzy reference, lol. I was always intrigued by the commercial/...almost made me wanna learn a new language

WarOfTheBees

Hey, remember when this movie came out and we still had hope?

MarkNM

Gonna be some sweet sounds, comin down, on the night shift...

MarkNM

That sentence is doing a lot of work on a lot of levels.

WarOfTheBees

The mirroring of the Disney Star Wars trilogy to real-world events is something else. 2015: Future looks bright, can't wait to see what's next. 2017: Okay, things aren't great but maybe we can pull together... 2019: All your heroes are dead and nothing they did mattered.

Matt

"Oh wow they're ignoring the 10 year rul....oh....oh no...."

Billie Jackson

The Phasma comic is probably an adaptation of the novel. Which was okay, but after the halfway point I dropped it because there's so much better stuff to read.

J HEASLEY

Rise of Skywalker isn't thay bad.

Chris

You're right. It's worse!

Erin Hardy

It's been a minute since I've watched this all of the way through, but I fell for every single "Isn't this sort of like Episode IV?" wink and nudge then and I generally still do now. I still watch the force hallucination every now and then (also John Boyega and his buddies losing their shit watching that first trailer) and weep for all of the cool shit that never gets paid off in this sequel trilogy. If memory serves, the Alec Guinness "Rey?" came from a clipped version of him saying the word "afraid" with an inflection that could sound like he's calling for her. I don't remember whether it was a line from one of the completed films or something from the cutting room floor.

We Hate Movies

I said the same thing when doing this title was suggested lol - Andrew

TJ Gaines

People also seem to forget that Theo Vonn got his start on MTV’s Road Rules.

Melissa Benjamin

This came out when my son was in high school. We have always been a Star Wars family. I showed my son the originals when he was 2. He’s loved it ever since, and now he knows way more about it than me. Anyway, we went to a band concert at school one night, and after the last song, this kid playing drums just stands up and yells “Han Solo dies in the new movie!!!” The teacher just starts stammering out “Uhh… uhhh… No he doesn’t!!!” I leaned o er and whispered to my husband “That little shit better thanks his lucky stars that I’ve already seen it, because I would have no problem spending the night in jail for smacking him off that stage.” Insane to spoil something like that in an auditorium full of Gen X!

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

The 1st act of Force Awakens almost got me because it focused on a new generation paving their own way. Once Han and Chewbacca showed up, the sequel trilogy turned into one non stop nostalgia blowjob. "Chewie, we're home!" my ass.

Watch_N_Rewatch

Did anyone else have the friends saying this is just the exact same movie plot as the original Star Wars New Hope? I get the similarities but meh...

Frank Grimes

Logan Lucky is a good time. It’s redneck Oceans Eleven. Crafty hicks rip off a NASCAR race.

MarkNM

Say what you will about JJ, but he wanted to make a Star Wars that looked and felt like a Star Wars movie, and one thing he's proven multiple times is that he really knows how to hook you with a pilot episode. I think the part that no one is saying out loud about Disney and Filoni right now is that they are content to let Star Wars bleed out until it's just another cult property that will make constant if unspectacular profit, as long as they don't spend too much money and effort making it.

Jonnie Sea

For years when me kids argue with me I often retort: “That that to Kanjiklub!” And I’m so happy that dude gets so much play in this episode!

Busiris

Still genuinely love the first two of this trilogy. Looking forward to getting back into them. I remember seeing this one in theaters and being confused about Max von Sydow. He's such a memorable actor and they seemingly (to me) treat him like a known character and I genuinely was like "Wait, was von Sydow in another Star Wars movie and I completely blanked him out??"

LoganTheWise

I remember watching this on a bootleg that my buddy had but I had to turn it off when I first tried to watch it, because we were on acid and the opening with the bloody hand print on Finn's helmet was far too much lol

Jessica M

I will pay for the feet tier but I don't actually want the pics, I just want to make sure y'all are okay. 😄

JK

"That guy, it just looks like a surfing caveman" I scream-laughed

Billie Jackson

Never would have been okayed by Disney, but Finn, Rey and Poe should have all ended up together. No need for a love triangle then.

MarkNM

I'd always assumed they clipped down the word "betrayed" from "he betrayed and murdered your father."

Dennis Stack

Just thinking about the days when Steve would print out the Tribune Trivia at his old job....how many trees would you kill printing out the trivia for this one?! 😂

Sonya Ballantyne

That Allison Hammond interview with Harrison Ford always makes me cackle just for how he says, "SHOW ME THE MONEY"

Dalton Barrett

I can’t wait for you guys to trash episode nine

RJ Cunningham

There’s a new Star Wars movie coming out? Seeing this in theaters, the score blasting after that liminal period when the last message on the screen ends, that second of darkness when the audio is silent but changes into a different silence for that split second then John Williams baby!! I saw the re-releases in theaters in the 90s but gotta admit there was a different feeling with it being a new Star Wars movie

Randy Record

Would love a commentary for The Last Jedi

Bible Black

Just watched Soldier today free on YouTube. That movie is definitely an episode. Now I'm off to go watch Phantoms because I just watched that Resident Evil trailer and I need more of that vibe. Also the Lando comic is a fun read. He basically did a Dirty Dozen/Monument Men kind of thing after Jedi.

Jethro Gulner

I liked TFA quite a bit when I saw it, though I did think there were a few too many instances of "hey, remember this from Star Wars!" TLJ was absolutely fantastic except for the part where they totally forgot Finn was supposed to be sensitive to the force. I never bothered to see RotS

Monster Mittenz

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has that song pop into their head literally any time anyone says "it's been" 😹

BBB

I imagine Bambett goes down in a fit of rage in a parking lot just like DeNiro’s lady friend in “Jackie Brown”

Jan

The last good one? I’ll wait

Rose Esposito

"Are you a fan of the original?" "Never seen it."

I.C. Weiner

Re: Shrinking, I told a friend about your observations that you can tell how much an older actor cares about a role depending on how much they're sitting/standing. Each season he stands more and my friend thought it was hilarious

Chaz Keracher

While saying this movie takes a lot from A New Hope, I still really like it; as well as The Last Jedi. The problem is that The Rise of Skywalker was such a disappointment, I don’t have have the desire to watch the other two movies.

Sonya Ballantyne

I can't remember the exact quote but I love when Allison is asking, "So what did you say when they wanted you to come back for Blade Runner?" Harrison: ".....'so what?'" Allison: *takes Ryan's booze*.

Todd B

It's been ages since I last watch TFA, but that fucker's line is living rent free in my brain.

Sonya Ballantyne

I was asking about the feet pics because I wanted to get as far away from them as possible!

Darcy MacDonald

I keep picturing Cousin Greg. Missed opportunity for Kylo Ren to have someone Gregging for him.

DMAC

"We Need to Talk About Kylo" Jesus Chevy Chase Christ, cue the scene where Leia walks in on Kylo jerking off while staring right at her.

Brad Mull

When they came out this strong with a new Star Wars film how could we possibly know what was to come next :(

Boston Roberts

I adore the final sabre duel. There's weight, savagery and emotion behind every blow. A breath of fresh from the twirling glow stick fights of the prequels. But also, I think Ben was just toying with Finn. Like a cat playing with a mouse before the killing blow

Matthew Lloyd

You guys didnt talk about Kylo Rens line before the lightsabre fight "TRAITOR!!!!"

JD Hayward

Now we have no Jobs, no Cash and no Hope

JD Hayward

Exactly this. I was hoping it’d be like the prequel trilogy with a whole bunch of great new characters like Elan Sleazebaggano and General Grievous. I hope you - like me - scoffed and groaned loudly through the rest of the movie.

Elliott Tipton

I'm glad you guys brought up Finn killing his bros, it never made sense to me given the idea of his childhood indoctrination.

Ben Sharpe

The first time we see Rey inside sliding down the cable in the downed Destroyer gave me vibes of Indiana Jones in the opening of Raiders before we see his face.

Laura Coleman

I love this movie and have always been furious she wasn’t actually a skywalker like this first movie tee’ed up.

Laura Coleman

Also: I’m of the opinion that Han doesn’t come back as a ghost. That’s the last thing Leia does before she dies. She sends herself as Han because she knows it’s what Ben needs. Because once again: Leia is the most powerful Jedi in the Skywalker family

Chris Harriss

Im a little late to this one, started it last night. Gents, there is a ton of "yeah, this belongs in the We ❤️ Feed, but..." Your collective tone and and whatnot gave off serious "ok we *want* to like this mess, um..."

Casey Holmes

Soooo much potential with Poe, Finn and Phasma. I'd love the Del Toro character from episode 8 to be a mercenary who wants Finn to join up, Finn spends the movie trying to resolve that he can be more than a stormtrooper and then bit emotional climax is that Finns good buddy has a history with Phasma as a human trafficker. You can soften the edges and have Poe admit it but he quit when he found out. Then he can lead the uprising in 9 and resolve it all.

Adam Sweeney

I work as a cleaner at a college in Oswego. We’re in a dorm and it’s boring work. Once they got talking about Chewbacca’s fingers and Andrew saying he’d rather watch The Crypt Keeper take a shower, I Max Cady laughed loud enough people on other floors heard me. Well done.

Dave Waters

People cheered so hard when that John Williams music dropped in the theater. It was an event.

Dave Waters

The double whammy of the Jesse Ventura impression and then the Scottish accent had me laughing like a lunatic in my car.

Dave Waters

I knew this line was coming from your post and STILL cracked up.
