“Kylo Ren meeting Palpatine should be a big deal!” - Chris

On this week’s episode, we’re heading back to a galaxy far, far away once again to chat about the Star Wars film that flew the franchise into the mountain, The Rise of Skywalker!

Is this movie the best argument ever for why studios should never listen to the Internet? Has Richard E. Grant’s grand talent ever been more wasted than this role as General Pryde? Shouldn’t they have tried another way to handle the Leia issue? What a slap in the face with that Chewbacca medal crap at the end, right? And anybody else up for getting some shark teeth put in? PLUS: Palpatine puts the first five rows of his arena into the Zap Zone!

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ace, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Greg Grunberg, Ian McDiarmid, Billie Lourd, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Dee Williams, and Shirley Henderson as the voice of Babu Frik; directed by J.J. Abrams.

Somehow, TROS returned.

David

I hate this movie with the fire of a thousand Star Destroyers.

Sam

I'm vaguely dreading listening to this; I'm sure you guys will be hilarious, but I really, really hate this movie!

Paul

The film that sentenced JJ Abrams to movie jail. Justice was served. 👍🏻

Matzar

Made my Monday scaries dissolve

Luke Gordnier

For the first time in film history, a movie starts in the middle of the story. Truly a groundbreaking moment from Disney and jj.

Cooper87

Watched the new Mando movie and all I could think about is when is Pedro Pascal going to make the smokey and the bandit movie. He looks so much like Burt Reynolds.

Frank Grimes

opening night at the theater i groaned loudly during the crawl....i think i might've pissed off some people, but by the end i think the movie itself pissed them off more, lol. This was such a mess of a movie....and much of it made zero sense.

Busiris

I remember that opening night waaaay back in 2019, getting soaked in the rain on my way to the theater. And then the movie happened and the night got worse! Honestly, the Leia scenes are some of the worst stuff for me. It was/is so off-putting. Everything said during her scenes is all vague nothing dialogue made to sound sorta relevant to the plot. She's like a ghost haunting the movie.

David

Bless this episode. Fuck this movie.

Craig

I never understood the hate over Luke’s character in The Last Jedi. Have these people never met a grampy who became bitter, cynical and conservative in their old age? People change!

Craig

Always thought the perfect fix for Fisher’s death would have been swapping her fate with Laura Dern’s Holdo in The Last Jedi. Leia gets a heroic ending, Holdo takes on the mantle in the next movie. They would barely have had to make any changes.

Barista Bran

Next year the ten year rule will apply to Last Jedi. I would love to see you guys cover it in 2027

Dennis Stack

Me leaving the theater in 2019: at least we'll get a great WHM episode out of that piece of shit. Today, we reap those rewards, my brothers and sisters!

David Thompson

What do you mean we dont know Rey's father. I heard a whole podcast episode about Ken Palps

Ed Harris

It pisses me off to no end that this is the last thing I saw in theaters before covid. After a certain point I stopped giving a crap and sat there simply because I had already paid for the ticket and had nothing else in particular to do that day, which tends to happen when your climactic entry in the series has no actual stakes, emotional or otherwise. I wasn't even engaged enough to hate the damn thing.

Matt

This was the last movie I saw before the pandy lockdowns and I was PISSED that this could potentially be the last thing I saw in theaters.

Chad Kroning

I saw this solo in the theaters. The scene where Chewie "dies" I was like I saw the fucking trailer where he's with Lando which hadn't happened yet in the movie. Also, cannot say Last Jedi is a good movie. It's too cringey at times for me.

Tim O'

I bet his spider legs platform has a little cup holder

Tim O'

I remember walking out of the theater after seeing this. I turned to my partner and said, "I think they actually managed to make something worse than the prequels."

Frank Grimes

I thought 3PO's "goodbye to my friends..." was unearned and hallow...especially since...those people weren't his friends! His real friends were R2 and either dead or presumed dead. Poe, Rey and them...he barely knew them.

Kevin Lynch

The Space-Coachella party happens every 42 years because Star Wars was released 42 years before Rise. It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s also a Hitchhiker’s reference

MarkNM

Whom do you think complained the loudest?

MarkNM

Fuck man, same. I was so pissed at myself that it hadn't been Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Matthew Lloyd

So my idea for the third film was as follows: - takes place several years after 2 - first order has totally taken over but is incredibly fragmented because Ren is in charge and he's a big baby - he's occupying Corusant with a chunk of his fleet, corusant has been bombed to shit (Leia was there meeting a spy and died) - she dies passing info to the rebellion that the storm troopers are on the verge of rebelling, so they plan to head to some central communication blah blah so Finn can give a speech to push them over - Rey heads to Corusant with a kill team to take out Ren, she's eventually becomes the lone survivor and fights the knights of Ren and gets knocked out, more force Shenanigans and she gets out fights Ren, chooses not to kill him and he's now nothing and she leaves a crashing ship. The knights turn on ren and they die when the ship hits the planet. - first order fragments into little empires but the galaxy has risen up and the fight begins anew.

Erin Hardy

I decided to stream Parasite instead of going to the theater, so TROS was my potential last.

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

I was so checked out on Star Wars by the time Rise of Skywanker was released that I laughed my ass off like Max Cady in the theater watching it.

MarkNM

(Short version, because woo buddy I could go for days.) I thought the film should have opened with the Resistance getting their ass kicked but still achieving whatever early objective. Finn is leading ground troops sporting a kick ass beard. Rose is in the fight and is visibly pregnant with Finn's child. In the aftermath, Kylo Ren surveys the battleground and is constantly followed by Luke's Force ghost, who alternates between taunting him and genuinely trying to help. Luke reveals that Leia has died. There's more, but I'm sure I've burned my nerd credits for the day.

Matthew Lloyd

Beard yes, Rose pregnant no. Like tye boys said a few weks a go if you do that then you reduce her to "the girlfriend". She should be there as Finns second in command as his combat engineer.

Rose Esposito

I agree. I KNOW Mark Hamill himself disliked the writing choices and I respect that, but come on, he spent all that time fighting and defeating the Empire, only to have the First Order rise not long after that AND take his own (shitty) nephew?? I can certainly see why he'd lose hope.

MarkNM

This was a cathartic listen. Note that I said "listen," because I couldn't muster up the guts for a rewatch. I've viewed the original 3 movies in the cumulative triple digits, easy. This one? Maybe someday, but until then, thanks for jumping in front of the bus for us abstainers, fellers.

MarkNM

She gets there. The pregnancy is inconsequential to her role in the story until the very end. Specifically to show that unlike Padme, pregnancy doesn't have to stick her on the shelf but for weeping and gnashing.

“Chris, you’re a cheat!” - Billy Dee Williams

RonnieSoak

Just to point out: Wedge Antilles actually is in this movie. Back in 2015 I was hoping for Denis Lawson to be in The Force Awakens and I was so bummed when he wasn't. Supposedly he wasn't interested. Then 4 years later and I see him not in the cockpit of an X-Wing but in the turret of the Millenium Falcon saying "Nice flying Lando!" 2 seconds tops and not standing up. I was crushed and humbled. If he doesn't want to be in your stupid movie don't force him to be there. I really would like to know how much he got paid for this shit.

jribs

I’m crying over the Adam Driver line-o-Rama from his bathroom while a birthday party is ongoing. Now that is what I’d like to see.

Eren Keskin

🗣️I am all the WHM fans

Billie Jackson

There's a book that fleshes the Rey, her parents, Luke and Lando thing. Shadow of the Sith.

Billie Jackson

Fleshes it out, that is. I've only read the first bit of it, but it seems decent.

Daniel Garcia

He's in the movie RIGHT after that dude from Heroes blows up who in the original On-Screen ep is mentioned as being like the adopted kid of Wedge????

Jonnie Sea

The movies greatest sin was showing the world that Star Wars is indeed “just a movie” Vulnerable to reshoots, studio interference, focus groups etc. Solo and Rouge One had “troubles” but I never saw it on screen… This movie destroyed my illusion that Star Wars was special and I will never forgive it!

Rose Esposito

I'm not sure what sums up the misguided-ness of this movie better: Kylo repairing the smashed helmet or the classic "somehow, Palpatine returned" (after nerds like us spent MONTHS speculating about how precisely it could've happened). 🫠

Busiris

Really good call there. Plus as an added potential bonus: maybe we'd get more Laura Dern!!!

David

The Last Jedi went to the trouble of giving Luke an interesting character arc, as opposed to having him the all-knowing and all-asskicking warrior that pockets of the internet wanted.

Adam Ray

You guys have no idea how elated I felt when I heard you say the next episode. I've always been bummed and have never listened to the live episode because my hearing isn't great to begin with. And that movie is the only movie I've ever apologized to my family for constantly playing when I was a kid.

Mr. Nobody

Sorry Cabin, but Star Wars is for kids! It's ok to like stuff for kids, and it's important to demand quality content for kids, not AI slop, but Star Wars is for everybody but actually its for kids

Adam Ray

And p.s. much like what David is saying, I hate RoS with a passion I never thought possible.

Chris

Nien Nunb definitely got cooked up in that force lightning storm at the end. Not that he's Chewbacca level or anything but I feel like he was a pretty well-liked tertiary character and having a blink and you miss it death during that gray sludge battle is downright disrespectful.

Voror

Just such a weird watch. I had no idea about the Fortnite thing which is just insane. The walk back on Rey's origins from TLJ I didn't care for as I actually really liked the answer that film gave way more than her just being another part of some big force family. I do remember liking that moment when Rey gives Ben the lightsaber and just does this little shoulder shrug before launching into an attack. It felt like something the character might have picked up from Han if that makes sense. I would have been curious to see that Ben Solo movie or at least hear more about it. No idea if that Rey film ever gets off the ground but I was interested in that too. I just didn't feel like seeing the new SW. I do hope that Starfighter one winds up good. I know it won't be the same but I was a big fan of the old X-Wing Rogue Squadron novels. Always thought those could have made for some good movies.

SailorSuu

This movie is where Disney completely lost me because it felt like watching an apology to whining, pathetic bully. There are bones of a potentially solid story here, but the meat is too tainted. And the Reylo kiss, a legitimately hysterical laugh erupted from my body.

Emil Svensson

Well, you could've consoled yourself with the fact that you at least didn't put money in the pocket of QT who publicly, specifically, explicitly has victim blamed the child(ren) r*ped by Polanski.

Daimon

Like with the Needful Things episode, I do love the idea of a villain just singing the lyrics to the Spice Girls song 2 Become 1

Craig

They explained it! It was “somehow”.

Smaug

Have they ever talked about Rogue One? Idk how everyone on the show feels about it, hard to believe it wouldn't be a WLM (2nd or 3rd best SW IMO)

J HEASLEY

I don't mind this movie. It is far superior to any of the prequels. It has a shit ton of problems but whatever. It looks and feels like star wars. None of the prequels feel like anything except sequels to lawnmower man.

Nicholas Vogel

omg, the first ten minutes of this had me cracking up so hard - comparing Rian Johnson to Andy Dufrene in Shawshank....

I.C. Weiner

Great episode, but I have to give a minor correction on the Jordan/Pippen anecdote. Jordan's kid didn't date Scottie's daughter, he dated Scottie's ex-wife. She later went on to date a player on the Lakers at a time her son was on the team. Edit: Sorry, she did this when her son was on the Timberwolves and before she dated the Jordan kid

RJ Cunningham

Movie jail is very interesting to me, where it’s kinda nonsensical. Like, few have produced movies that have generated such money as Abrams, and one shitty one that is obviously studio-mandated, somehow ends his career. Really shows how little power the talent has, even when the talent moves into producing/lead roles. The “producer class” of rich kids and old men that truly dictate Hollywood are weasel scumbags that literally have more power than any director or actor or writer ever

Chad Hantak

I was going to post this cause I’ve heard them say multiple times Wedge wasn’t in the sequels. Though as a huge fan of Star Wars still can’t bring myself to watching this. I just watched the clip of Lando flying the Falcon cause it’s Lando flying the Falcon, and noticed Wedge.

Todd B

Adding to this - thanks to the way Lucas handled the prequels, he's hand to reckon with learning his two mentors basically lied their asses off about their role in his father's fall from grace and the rise of the Empire. It's very telling one of the few times the ST acknowledges the prequels is Luke specifically pointing out how he was aware of the Jedi being completely oblivious to the Sith being right in front of them.

Todd B

"Whaddup, Exegol? This is DJ Palpatone, and I bring you...UNLIMITEEED BEEEEEEEAAAATS!!!"

Jamie

The one group hug that works is the one at the end of the first It movie. Partially because it's a good affirmation of what they've been through and what they mean to each other, and partially because it replaces a certain scene from the book.

Matthew Lazorwitz

Ochi of Bestoon has a big part on the Darth Vader comics. He is kind of Starscream, constantly working at cross purposes to Vader and trying to upstage him to Palpatine. He's fun

Brendan Flanagan

When you’re talking about C-3PO being rebooted and his last save being in an OG movie, I was thinking it would be really funny if his first words were “Stormtroopers? Here? I must go tell the others! OH NO! I’VE BEEN SHOT!”

Brendan Flanagan

When the stormtroopers see the Knights of Ren and one of them says “ghouls”, I really thought the dialogue was: “Knights of Ren” “Cool!”

jribs

I’d take Andor (season 1+2) + Rogue One over any other three of the films

Frank Grimes

The only part of IX I somewhat enjoy is when they bump into Lando at Space Burning Man. If they had done space molly and wandered around for 2 hours it would’ve been a better movie.

Kureigu

Myself and my eldest did a rewatch of the sequel trilogy recently and both of us found this film insufferable. The poe line about palpatine alone is enough to stop watching. The info was in the scroll a character didn't need to say it.

Gone

“Has there ever been a good group hug?” The end of season 2 of “Reservation Dogs,” that group hug got me real emotional.

Smaug

Totally!

Dave Waters

"What's in your space wallet?" As always, the podcast is way more entertaining than the movie. I did like the Rey vs. Tie Fighter scene. Badass.
